Most Silver Pines crashes and black screens should be approached in this order: install the newest hotfix, test the DirectX 11 launcher, verify the Steam installation, remove overlays and capture software, update Windows and your graphics driver, and then collect a DxDiag report if the problem continues. Hotfix 1 added DirectX 11 support as a performance fallback, while Hotfix 2 fixed several softlocks and interaction failures. Windows 11 rendering conflicts, display-mode settings, streaming software, and high-polling-rate gaming mice can still require separate tests.
Use this order before changing hardware
Work through one change at a time and relaunch Silver Pines after each test. That leaves you with a useful result instead of several simultaneous changes whose effects cannot be separated.
- Update Silver Pines. Install the newest available game update before troubleshooting an older build.
- Choose DirectX 11 at launch. This is the first graphics-path test for freezes, stutter, crashes, and black screens, particularly on Steam Deck.
- Verify the Steam installation. Steam can replace missing or corrupted game files.
- Test without overlays or capture software. Disable Discord streaming, OBS, and comparable tools temporarily.
- Change the display mode. Try Exclusive Fullscreen or Maximized Window instead of Borderless Windowed.
- Update Windows and your GPU driver, then restart. Also close non-essential background software.
- Collect DxDiag and contact Team17** if Windows 11 freezes or black screens continue.
Keep notes on the symptom, platform, game version, graphics option, display mode, overlay status, and whether each step changed anything. Those details are more useful to support than a report that simply says the game “does not work.”
Install the hotfixes first
What Hotfix 1 changed
Hotfix 1 added a DirectX 11 option to the launcher and fixed additional softlock scenarios. The option matters because it lets you test a different rendering path without changing your hardware. Team17’s pinned guidance specifically asks players with performance problems on Steam or Steam Deck to launch in DirectX 11 and see whether performance improves.

What Hotfix 2 changed
Hotfix 2 addressed several progression and interaction failures:
- Interactable objects could stop working after an interaction was interrupted.
- A Sheriff Department boss fight could fail to progress.
- Several softlocks in Riverside locations were fixed, including situations involving areas entered without a flashlight.
If you are stuck in one of these situations, update before trying workarounds. A file check cannot recreate a bug that is fixed only in a newer game build.
Check the installed version
Let Steam finish downloading the update, then restart Steam and relaunch the game. When reporting a problem, include the hotfix or game version shown by your installation and the date you first observed the issue. A menu hang after a hotfix can be a new regression rather than an old save-file problem.
Try DirectX 11 for performance problems
At launch, select the DirectX 11 option rather than the default graphics path. This is the recommended first test for stutter, freezes, poor performance, and black screens, especially on Steam Deck. Do not treat it as a guaranteed cure: the game team has also identified configuration-specific rendering problems, so a different result may require a support report.

When the test is useful
- The game freezes during startup or shortly after entering a save.
- A black screen appears while audio continues or when changing scenes.
- Performance degrades while playing on Steam Deck.
- Stutter begins after opening a stream or recording session.
Record the result
Run the same scene or menu that failed under the previous graphics path. Note whether DirectX 11 changes the symptom from a crash to a freeze, removes the black screen, improves frame pacing, or has no effect. That distinction helps support identify a rendering-path problem rather than a general launch failure.
Repair the Steam installation
Steam’s file verification tool can repair missing or corrupted content associated with crashes. It does not replace an update and it does not fix every engine or driver problem, but it is a low-risk check after an unexpected shutdown or incomplete download.
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click Silver Pines and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart the game.
If verification reports repaired files, repeat the exact action that previously failed. If it reports no problems, continue with the graphics, display-mode, and system checks rather than repeatedly running verification.

Team17 has described a known rendering problem between Unity and Windows 11 that affects some setups. The developer wrote: “We have a known render problem between unity and win11 where it really doesn’t like the other options for some setups.” This wording is important: it identifies a compatibility issue, not a universal Windows 11 failure, and it does not establish one setting that works for every computer.

First tests for a Windows 11 rendering failure
- Launch with DirectX 11.
- Switch from Borderless Windowed to Exclusive Fullscreen or Maximized Window.
- Close Discord streaming, OBS, and other capture or overlay software.
- Install current Windows updates and your graphics-driver update.
- Restart the computer before testing again.
A driver update may help, but neither a driver update nor DirectX 11 guarantees a fix. If the same black screen or freeze returns, collect the diagnostic information requested by the developer.
Generate a DxDiag report
- Press Windows Key+R.
- Type
dxdiag. - Select OK and wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to finish checking the system.
- Choose Save All Information.
- Save the text file somewhere easy to find.
- Attach that file to your report to Team17, along with the game version and the steps that reproduce the failure.
Describe whether the screen is completely black, whether sound continues, whether the crash occurs before or after the menu, and whether DirectX 11 or a display-mode change altered it. These observations give the support team context that the DxDiag file alone cannot provide.
Streaming, recording, overlays, and display modes
The Silver Pines team has reported that streaming or recording can cause performance to degrade over time in some display modes. Discord streaming, OBS, and similar capture software should therefore be disabled for a controlled test.

- Close the stream or recording session completely.
- Disable overlays and any non-essential capture utility.
- Launch Silver Pines without streaming.
- Test Exclusive Fullscreen.
- If needed, test Maximized Window.
- Compare both with Borderless Windowed, which has been associated with the reported degradation.
Use the same save, location, and approximate play time for each comparison. If the game stays stable without capture software but degrades during a stream, report that pattern rather than describing it as a random crash. Current graphics drivers may also help, but the team’s observation does not establish that a driver update alone resolves the problem.

Launch failures after the game and driver checks
For a game that will not launch at all, Steam’s general launch guidance is to update Windows and hardware drivers, disable non-essential software, verify the files, check system requirements, and restart the computer. Apply those checks after the game is updated so you are not diagnosing a known fixed build.
- Windows: Install pending operating-system updates.
- Graphics driver: Install the current driver supplied for your GPU.
- Background software: Close utilities that inject overlays, capture video, monitor games, or otherwise hook into the render process.
- Restart: Reboot before the next launch attempt, especially after installing an update or driver.
- Requirements: Confirm that the computer meets Silver Pines’ published system requirements.
Do not infer a hardware failure from one crash. The useful dividing line is whether the game launches reliably after a clean restart and without overlays, and whether the symptom changes when DirectX 11 or a different display mode is selected.
Controller, mouse, and input problems
Very slow mouse response
For very slow response from an advanced gaming mouse, Team17 suggested updating the mouse’s software and trying a lower polling rate of 500 MHz. The team also asked whether connecting a controller changed the behavior. Treat this as a targeted diagnostic experiment, not a universal controller recommendation.
- Update the mouse’s configuration software and firmware if an update is offered by its manufacturer.
- Lower the polling rate to 500 MHz for a test.
- Launch Silver Pines and reproduce the slow-response symptom.
- Test with a controller, if available, and record whether the behavior changes.
- Restore your preferred mouse setting after the test if the polling-rate change has no effect.
Include the mouse model, connection type, polling-rate setting, and controller result in a support report. Avoid presenting a new cable, controller, or hardware purchase as a Silver Pines-specific fix; the available guidance does not identify one.

Controller not working or behaving differently
Start by identifying the scope of the failure: does the controller fail only in Silver Pines, only in menus, only after a hotfix, or in every Steam game? Then record the controller model, wired or wireless connection, platform, game version, and the exact buttons or actions that fail. Test once with the mouse disconnected or with a different input device only to establish whether the symptom changes; do not assume that the alternate device is the permanent solution.
Where to report an input bug
Steam directs players to the third-party developer or publisher for post-launch game bugs, gameplay questions, and controller questions. Send those reports to Team17 or the game’s support team. Steam Support is the appropriate destination for Steam client, account, authentication, or purchase problems rather than a game-specific input defect.

A current Steam discussion describes a main menu that remains stuck after a button is pressed following a hotfix, even after file verification. Team17 Support replied that similar reports had been received and passed to the team for investigation: “We have now passed this over to the team to investigate further.” Treat this as a potentially known issue, not proof that your Steam Deck or installation is defective.
Information to gather before contacting support
- The hotfix or game version installed when the menu became stuck.
- Your Steam Deck model and SteamOS update channel.
- Whether the hang occurs immediately at the main menu or after a particular button press.
- Whether a restart, DirectX 11 launch, and file verification changed it.
- A short video or screenshot if the behavior can be captured safely.
Do not repeatedly delete saves or perform hardware changes while the issue is being investigated. Preserve the exact steps and state of the device so support can compare reports.
Choose the right escalation path

For a Windows 11 rendering failure, attach the DxDiag text file. For a Steam Deck menu hang, identify the hotfix and device software channel. Support can investigate a reproducible, well-documented symptom more efficiently than a general request to “fix crashes.”

What not to conclude from a failed test
- A DirectX 11 launch that does not help does not rule out a driver, overlay, display-mode, or Windows 11 rendering conflict.
- A clean Steam verification does not prove that the problem is unrelated to Unity or Windows 11.
- A driver update that changes nothing does not establish that the GPU is defective.
- A controller that works when a mouse does not does not identify a permanent controller fix; it only narrows the input comparison.
- A menu hang after a hotfix should not automatically be blamed on corrupted files when similar reports have already been passed to the team for investigation.
The goal of each step is to isolate a variable and leave support with a precise, reproducible description. Once the game is updated, tested on DirectX 11, verified, run without capture software, and checked on an updated system, persistent failures are ready for escalation with the relevant diagnostics.
