If a PC game begins crashing immediately after an Unreal, Unity, or other engine update, treat the first failure as a regression-isolation problem—not as proof that your graphics card has failed. Reproduce the crash once, preserve every original log and crash report, and record the exact build, renderer, GPU, driver, and failure stage before changing anything.

Then test one variable per run: driver state, shader caches, DirectX version, overlays and overclocks, and newly enabled graphics features. A stable DX11 run can show that the DX12 path or its interaction with the driver needs attention, but it cannot by itself diagnose a hardware fault.

Why an engine change can trigger a crash

An engine update changes the code that creates resources, compiles shaders, schedules GPU work, handles memory, and translates rendering commands to DirectX. A game can therefore expose a new failure even when Windows, the GPU, and the game’s content have not changed. New shader permutations, altered resource lifetimes, different synchronization, or a newly enabled feature may interact with a driver version that worked with the previous build.

The timing is useful evidence, but it is not a diagnosis. A crash that starts after an engine change may come from the changed build, a driver regression, stale or corrupted shader caches, a renderer-specific path, an overlay or mod, an unstable overclock, or a hardware problem that the new workload happens to reveal. Your goal is to separate those possibilities with controlled comparisons.

Start with an evidence-preserving crash record

Do not begin by deleting caches, reinstalling the game, or updating every component at once. Those actions can remove the evidence needed to identify the first failure and make a later result impossible to reproduce.

Reproduce once and write down the trigger

  1. Launch the affected build with your normal settings.
  2. Record the exact action that precedes the crash: starting the game, loading a particular save, entering a scene, enabling ray tracing, opening a menu, compiling shaders, or playing for a fixed period.
  3. Note whether the desktop remains responsive, whether the display driver resets, and whether the game creates a crash dialog or closes silently.
  4. Do not repeat the test dozens of times yet. One clean reproduction gives you a baseline while the original logs are intact.

Record the environment

Create a small text record for every run. Include the game and engine build, Windows build, GPU model, graphics-driver version and release date, renderer (such as D3D12 or D3D11), resolution and key graphics features, and the save or scene used. Add the time of the crash and whether it happened during loading, shader compilation, gameplay, or exit.

Keep the record beside copied logs. When you later change one variable, add a new line rather than editing the old one. This prevents a “fixed” result from being confused with a different test condition.

Save crash reports and logs before cleaning anything

Unreal Engine crash reports

Unreal Engine creates a crash report when a game crashes. The report can contain the error type and call stacks, and the Crash Report Client may offer to send it. Save the complete report locally before dismissing the dialog or performing maintenance. Also copy the project’s Saved/Logs files, because the final lines often show the last subsystem reached before the failure.

When an Unreal GPU crash is involved, retain the full log rather than only a screenshot. Unreal’s GPU-crash guidance can expose the driver version and date and may include GPU breadcrumbs that identify the rendering stage where progress stopped.

Unity crash files and editor or player logs

Unity documents crash-file locations, including %TMP%CompanyNameProductNameCrashes on Windows. Copy the entire crash directory and the relevant player or editor log before clearing the project’s generated data. If the game uses a launcher, preserve its log as well; a launcher error can otherwise be mistaken for a renderer crash.

What to preserve in an evidence folder

  • The original crash report archive or files.
  • Unreal Saved/Logs or Unity player/editor logs.
  • A text file containing the build, renderer, GPU, driver version/date, Windows build, scene or save, and reproduction steps.
  • A screenshot of the visible error, if one appears.
  • The result of each later test, including the single variable changed.

Copy first, then clean. Never rely on a log that may be overwritten by the next launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Classify the crash signature

Search the saved logs for the first fatal line and nearby context. The wording determines which test should come next; it does not automatically identify the guilty component.

Signature or wording What it suggests First controlled test
D3D12, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, or DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG A DirectX 12 device or driver path stopped responding Check driver state, clear shader caches, then compare D3D11 if supported
“GPU crashed,” timeout, or TDR language The GPU workload exceeded the driver’s recovery window or encountered an invalid operation Capture Unreal GPU breadcrumbs and compare renderer or feature load
Shader compiler failure Compilation, cache data, or a driver shader compiler may be involved Clear the engine and vendor/DirectX shader caches after saving logs
Access violation or repeatable asset/scene name A specific code path or content item is failing Reproduce with that same save or scene and test the changed build
No graphics signature and an immediate process exit The failure may be outside the renderer Use the call stack and application log before changing graphics settings

Look for the earliest meaningful error, not merely the final “application stopped” line. A device-removed message can be a consequence of an earlier shader or resource error, so keep the surrounding lines when reporting the issue.

Check and isolate the graphics driver

Unity identifies both driver crashes and corrupted driver shader caches as possible causes of D3D12 GPU crashes. An engine update can also rely on a driver behavior that changed between releases.

Choose a known driver state

  1. Write down the currently installed driver version and release date.
  2. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, test the last known-good driver version using the vendor’s clean installation or rollback option.
  3. If the driver has not changed recently, install a current stable release rather than an optional or preview branch.
  4. Reboot, launch the same build, and use the same scene or save.
  5. Record whether the crash happens at the same stage and whether the signature changes.

Do not combine a driver change with a renderer switch in the same run. If both change, you cannot tell which one altered the result. Keep the version number and date in your test record so another person can reproduce the environment.

Clear shader caches deliberately

Shader caches can contain data generated by an older engine, driver, or graphics setting. A damaged cache can repeatedly trigger compilation errors or a crash during loading. Clearing it forces a clean rebuild, which may produce stutter while shaders compile again.

Recommended order

  1. Close the game, launcher, editor, and any process that may hold shader files.
  2. Confirm that the original logs and crash report have been copied.
  3. Remove the engine’s shader cache. In a Unity project this commonly includes Library/ShaderCache.
  4. Clear the relevant vendor and DirectX shader-cache locations using the operating system or graphics-driver cleanup controls.
  5. Reboot to release locked files and reset the graphics driver state.
  6. Run the identical scene or save and allow shader compilation to finish without interrupting it.
  7. Compare the result with the pre-clear run, noting compile time, stutter, crash stage, and log signature.

Epic support notes that repeated DirectX shader compilation can cause stutter and that clearing the shader cache can help. A successful first launch after clearing does not prove the cache was the original cause; repeat the same path once more to see whether the result is stable.

Compare DX12 and DX11 as an isolation test

If the title supports both APIs, run the failing build with D3D11 after preserving the DX12 evidence. Unity documents a fallback graphics API for D3D12 investigations, and Unreal guidance recommends switching from DX12 to DX11 to test whether the failure is renderer-specific.

Run a clean comparison

  1. Keep the same game build, save or scene, resolution, and feature settings wherever the API allows.
  2. Change only the renderer to DX11, using the game’s documented launch option or graphics menu.
  3. Reproduce the same action that failed under DX12.
  4. Record whether DX11 reaches the same point, crashes differently, or completes successfully.
  5. If you switch back to DX12, do so without changing another variable and preserve both logs.

A stable DX11 run points toward the DX12 code path, shader compilation, driver interaction, or a feature combination. It does not prove that the GPU is healthy, because DX11 may exercise different hardware features and workloads. Conversely, crashes in both APIs make a renderer-specific explanation less likely and increase the value of the call stack, driver comparison, and feature isolation.

Reduce the feature load without hiding the cause

Temporarily disable overlays, frame injectors, mods, and overclocks. Lower ray tracing or another newly enabled advanced shader feature only to determine whether that feature participates in the crash. These are controlled tests, not universal fixes.

Use one-variable runs

  • Run with overlays disabled, then restore them before testing the next variable.
  • Run at stock GPU and CPU clocks if an overclock or undervolt is active.
  • Turn ray tracing or the newly introduced feature off while leaving the renderer unchanged.
  • Use one reproducible scene or save rather than a random sequence of content.
  • Restore settings one at a time after a clean run.

If disabling one feature changes the result, record the exact feature and setting. Do not describe that result as proof of a defective GPU or a confirmed engine bug; it only identifies a path that deserves a focused report.

Interpret the results as a decision tree

Only DX12 crashes

Prioritize the driver version, shader caches, DX12-specific features, and the engine’s DX12 implementation. Attach both the failing DX12 log and the successful or differently failing DX11 log so the difference is visible.

Both DX12 and DX11 crash at the same scene

Focus on the repeatable asset or code path, the call stack, the engine build, and driver state. A renderer fallback has not isolated the problem, so avoid repeatedly changing APIs while losing the original signature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The crash disappears after clearing caches

Repeat the same launch and scene to confirm stability. Keep the pre-clear files and post-clear result. If the crash returns after shaders are rebuilt, the cache cleanup was not a durable solution and the rebuilt shader or driver interaction needs investigation.

The crash disappears after a driver rollback

Record both driver versions and dates and report the regression with the engine and game build. Do not install several intermediate drivers at once; a single known-good comparison is more useful than an untracked sequence.

The crash follows an overclock or advanced feature

Return to stock settings and reproduce before drawing conclusions. If stock settings are stable, re-enable one feature at a time to identify the threshold or combination. Hardware replacement should wait until repeatable evidence isolates a component across controlled settings and, ideally, more than one workload.

Prepare a report that developers can act on

A useful report lets the recipient reproduce the failure and compare it with a working configuration. Put the first fatal line near the top, then attach the complete files rather than pasting only a final error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include these fields

  • Game title, game build, and engine version.
  • Windows build.
  • GPU model and graphics-driver version and release date.
  • Renderer used for the crash and the result under the alternate renderer, if tested.
  • The exact scene, save, or action that reproduces the failure.
  • First fatal line, complete call stack, and relevant log section.
  • Whether the crash occurs during loading, shader compilation, gameplay, or exit.
  • Whether clearing engine and vendor/DirectX shader caches changed the result.
  • Whether overlays, mods, overclocks, ray tracing, or another newly enabled feature were disabled for a test.
  • Which single change produced each observed result.

Unreal’s Crash Reporter and GPU-crash documentation identify call stacks, logs, driver metadata, and GPU breadcrumbs as useful evidence. Include those artifacts in their original form whenever possible, and redact account names or other personal data only after checking that the redaction does not remove paths, versions, or stack information.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

  • Deleting evidence first: cache cleanup can remove the state that explains the first failure.
  • Changing several variables together: a new driver, DX11 mode, and lower settings in one run cannot identify the effective change.
  • Treating DX11 success as a hardware verdict: the APIs exercise different paths and features.
  • Repeating a random test: use the same scene or save so each run is comparable.
  • Reporting only “it crashed”: the first fatal line, call stack, versions, and renderer are needed to distinguish a driver, shader, engine, and content path.
  • Replacing hardware too early: wait for repeatable evidence across controlled settings and workloads.

A compact run sheet

Run Change Keep constant Record
Baseline None Build, scene, renderer, settings Crash stage, signature, logs
Driver Current or last known-good driver Build, scene, renderer, settings Version/date and result
Cache Engine and vendor/DirectX caches cleared Build, scene, renderer, driver Compile behavior and result
Renderer DX12 versus DX11 Build, scene, driver, comparable features API-specific logs and stability
Feature Overlay, overclock, ray tracing, or new feature toggled One change only Whether the same trigger reproduces

This run sheet turns a vague post-update crash into a reproducible comparison. Keep every result, including failed tests, because a negative result narrows the remaining possibilities.
