If your mouse disconnects or feels delayed during a match, start with its power and physical connection, then isolate the connection type and test the mouse on another port or computer. The right next step depends on whether it is wired USB, wireless through a USB receiver, or Bluetooth; no single setting is a confirmed fix for every kind of lag or disconnection.

Identify the connection and the symptom

First determine whether the mouse connects by wired USB, a wireless USB receiver, or Bluetooth. Then note what actually happens: does the device disappear and reconnect, does the cursor merely feel delayed, or does the issue occur after the computer wakes or at intervals? These patterns help choose the relevant checks; Logitech lists disconnects, wake failures, lag, and delay among possible connection symptoms, with causes that can include low battery, hubs, wireless interference, USB power settings, or a device, battery, or receiver fault (Logitech connection troubleshooting).

Connection type Checks that apply
Wired USB Inspect and reseat the cable; try another direct USB port and bypass any hub.
Wireless USB receiver Check battery or charge, reseat and reposition the receiver, and try another direct port.
Bluetooth Check battery or charge and use Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting rather than USB receiver steps.

Microsoft provides different guidance for USB wireless receivers and Bluetooth devices in its instructions for mouse and keyboard problems in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Check power and the physical connection first

  • Battery-powered mouse: Charge it or try fresh batteries, as appropriate for the model.
  • Wired mouse: Inspect the cable for visible damage and reseat it.
  • USB connection: Connect directly to a different computer USB port. Temporarily bypass a hub or dock to see whether the connection becomes stable.

These checks apply before changing software settings. Microsoft recommends checking the connection and power, inspecting a cable, trying another port, and temporarily removing a hub from the setup (Microsoft Support).

If you use a wireless USB receiver, improve its position

  1. Unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect it, as Microsoft suggests for USB wireless devices (Microsoft Support).
  2. Try a different direct USB port. If the receiver is behind the computer or obstructed, move it to a more open position, such as a front port, and closer to the mouse.
  3. Where practical, move other wireless or electrical devices away from the receiver and mouse.

For the Logitech M280, M320, and M275 families specifically, Logitech advises keeping other electrical devices at least 8 inches (20 cm) away and moving the mouse closer or changing the receiver port. That distance is model-family guidance, not a universal spacing requirement for all mice (Logitech M280/M320/M275 guidance). A USB extension cable can be an optional way to position a receiver more conveniently, but it will not address every possible battery, hardware, Bluetooth, or software problem (Logitech connection troubleshooting).

Separate a mouse problem from a computer problem

Test the mouse on another computer, using any driver the device requires. If the same problem follows it, the mouse, cable, battery, or receiver becomes a more likely source; Microsoft notes that replacement may be needed if the device does not work on another PC. If it works elsewhere, focus next on the original computer’s port, operating system, power configuration, or software. This comparison is a useful isolation clue, not proof of which component failed (Logitech; Microsoft).

Check Windows power and software settings only after basic tests

Logitech identifies USB selective suspend and USB hub power management as possible causes of certain mouse connection problems on Windows. Its support guidance includes disabling USB selective suspend for some wired and gaming mouse issues; the exact controls and older menu paths can vary by Windows release, device, and power plan. Use current Windows controls and instructions for the specific mouse before changing power settings. If a change does not help, restore the previous setting (Logitech connection troubleshooting; Logitech gaming mouse troubleshooting).

If the connection checks do not resolve the issue, check Windows Update and the manufacturer’s supported driver or firmware tools for your exact model. Logitech notes that some older utilities are no longer maintained, so follow the current support instructions for the device rather than assuming a legacy utility is appropriate.

Diagnose input lag without guessing at a universal setting

The cited manufacturer guidance recognizes laggy or delayed behavior, but does not establish that a particular polling rate, DPI value, surface, or in-game setting fixes disconnects or lag across mice. Treat setting changes as tests, not guaranteed remedies: change one setting at a time, then compare behavior during a match and outside the game. If the mouse disconnects entirely, prioritize power and connection checks over adjustments aimed only at cursor feel.
