A certificate warning in an MCP browser screenshot is a clue, not a diagnosis: first identify the browser and MCP server, then inspect the browser’s exact warning and certificate details. Do not enable an “accept insecure certificates” option as your first step; it can suppress the evidence without fixing the certificate.
What a certificate warning in an MCP screenshot can—and cannot—tell you
The image may show a browser’s TLS interstitial, or it may be a page or element screenshot that does not include browser controls. A screenshot alone does not establish why certificate validation failed, or even whether the visible content is browser UI. Record the exact warning text and error code from the browser, then inspect the certificate itself.
Identify the specific MCP server and browser before applying a setting. Chrome DevTools MCP, Firefox DevTools MCP, and Playwright MCP have different configuration options and capture behavior. Microsoft also documents Chrome DevTools MCP configurations for Edge and WebView2. Collect the details needed to reproduce the warning
Before changing browser or MCP settings, write down:

- The full target URL, including hostname.
- MCP server name and version, client, browser and browser version.
- Operating system and whether the browser is launched by MCP, attached to an existing session, headless, or remote.
- The full warning text and any error code shown by the browser.
- Whether the same URL behaves differently on another network or outside the MCP session.
Reproduce it without bypassing certificate checks
- Use the same URL and browser session configuration that produced the screenshot.
- Request a fresh capture without changing certificate-validation options.
- Save the returned image and compare it with what is visible in the actual browser window.
- If the image is a page-only or element capture, inspect the browser window separately for the TLS interstitial and certificate details. Playwright documents page and element screenshots and accessibility snapshots; its documentation does not promise that page screenshots include browser chrome.
Do not treat a page screenshot or accessibility snapshot as a substitute for the browser’s certificate information. If the browser UI is inaccessible in a headless or remote setup, reproduce the navigation in a visible session with the same browser and relevant configuration to inspect the warning.
Inspect the certificate and trust path
Use the browser’s certificate details and exact error code to check the likely failure points. These checks help narrow the cause; the MCP references do not identify the cause of a particular warning.

- Hostname: confirm the certificate covers the exact hostname in the URL. A certificate for a related domain does not necessarily cover a subdomain.
- Validity dates: check whether the certificate is currently valid. Also confirm that the computer’s clock and time zone are correct.
- Issuer and chain: check whether the issuer and intermediate certificates form a chain trusted by the browser and operating system.
- Network interception: if the warning appears only on a corporate network, VPN, or proxy, investigate whether TLS inspection is presenting a different certificate and whether that issuer is trusted as intended.
Do not enter credentials or other sensitive information while certificate validation remains unresolved. The appropriate repair depends on the evidence: renew or reissue an expired or misissued certificate, correct a hostname mismatch, configure the required trust chain, or investigate an unexpected proxy or inspection certificate.
Check whether the MCP configuration ignores certificate errors
Search the MCP server launch arguments and environment for an insecure-certificate option. These are implementation-specific examples, not universal MCP settings:

These options change how automation handles validation errors; they do not renew a certificate, correct a hostname, or make an untrusted connection safe. For a controlled diagnosis only, compare behavior with the option enabled and disabled in an isolated test context. A successful navigation after enabling it is not proof that the certificate is valid.
Repair, then verify with certificate checks enabled
- Fix the cause indicated by the browser’s certificate details: certificate validity, hostname, trust chain, system clock, or unexpected proxy configuration.
- Remove or disable the insecure-certificate bypass for normal use.
- If you changed trust settings or MCP configuration, restart or reconnect the browser session so it uses the updated state.
- Repeat the capture with validation enabled and confirm the browser no longer reports the warning.
