Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First identify which link is failing: a web link clicked in another app, a link or button on a page already open in Brave, or a link that should launch a separate app. Each follows a different route and has different settings. “Brave Origin” is not identified in the cited support material as a separate product; the sources refer to Brave or Brave Browser.
Before changing settings, note your device and operating-system version, Brave version, where you clicked the link, its intended destination, what happened instead, and whether the problem affects every link or only one site or link type.
Start by classifying the link problem
- A web link clicked outside Brave opens the wrong browser or nothing: check the device’s default-browser setting.
- A link or button on a page in Brave does nothing or shows an error: investigate that site, the link type, and its permissions.
- A website link stays in Brave instead of opening an app: check the external-app link path; the website and operating system can affect the outcome.
A recent Brave Community thread describes links to social and news content opening in Brave instead of external apps, but its reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal cause or fix: Brave Community discussion.
If links clicked in another app do not open Brave
When the link is an HTTP or HTTPS address tapped or clicked in another application, the operating system’s browser association is the first place to check. Set Brave as the default browser using the route for your platform.

If a link or button inside a Brave webpage fails
First check whether the problem is limited to one site, one link, or a certain kind of action. A page may rely on a pop-up, redirect, or protocol handler. Brave blocks pop-ups by default, and its site-permission controls let you inspect settings for the affected site.

- Check the permission relevant to the failed action, such as pop-ups or redirects, and change it only for that site when possible.
- Reload the page and retry the specific link or button.
Brave’s guide explains how to change site permissions. Avoid disabling broad protections when the issue appears limited to a particular site or action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a website link should open a separate app
Links intended for a native app involve more than the default-browser setting. Brave documents protocol handlers, which can let certain link types be handled by external applications or services. The site, the operating system, and the app’s own link support can all affect whether an app opens.

- Check the relevant site controls in Brave for a protocol-handler or external-app permission related to the link.
- On Brave mobile, look for Allow universal links to open in external apps and treat it as a diagnostic setting, not a guaranteed fix.
- Retry the link. If the site provides an explicit Open in app action, try that separately.
In the August 2026 community discussion, some users reported that enabling the mobile setting did not make every link open automatically. Those reports are anecdotal; the thread mentions iOS 27 beta with Brave 1.94 and Android 16 with Brave 1.93.136, so it should not be taken as evidence that all versions or sites behave alike: Brave Community discussion. Brave’s official documentation covers site permissions and protocol handlers.
Reset Brave settings only after narrower checks
If the issue began after an extension or app change and affects more than one site, resetting desktop Brave settings may help. Brave says the reset affects settings including site content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes; you may lose sign-in state or shopping-cart contents. Bookmarks, history, and saved passwords are retained, according to Brave.
- In desktop Brave, open Settings.
- Find the reset option and choose Reset settings to their original defaults.
- Review the confirmation before proceeding, then test the link again.
Do not start with a reset when the symptom points to a default-browser association or one site’s permission. If you cannot access Settings, Brave’s reset-settings help article recommends uninstalling and reinstalling Brave.
What to include when asking for help
If the link still fails, share enough detail for others to distinguish browser routing from site behavior:
- Device model, operating-system version, and Brave version.
- Where you clicked the link: another app, a webpage in Brave, or a link intended for a native app.
- The expected result and what actually happened, including any error message.
- Whether all links fail or only one site, destination, or link type.
- Whether the same link behaves differently in a private or clean profile, or in another browser.
For platform-specific guidance, start with Brave’s desktop, Android, iOS, site-permission, or reset-settings instructions, or ask in the Brave Community.
