A brief stutter in the first game session after an Intel Arc driver update may be shader processing, not a lasting fault. Let the game finish processing shaders, then check the game and the release notes for your exact driver and GPU before changing drivers. Update timing alone does not prove the driver caused a crash or slowdown.

First, identify what is happening

Separate a short pause from a persistent performance problem or a system-level crash. Note whether the symptom is limited to the first play after updating, repeats in the same scene, closes the game to desktop, or causes a black screen, full freeze, or spontaneous reboot. Intel’s crash guidance also discusses graphics-driver timeouts (TDRs) that may appear in Windows Event Viewer.

Before troubleshooting, record your Arc GPU model, installed driver version, Windows version, game version, and when the problem began. If you know which graphics API the game uses, record that too. These details help you compare the symptom with the correct release notes and support guidance.

Give first-run shader processing time

After a graphics driver update, a game may process shaders in the background. Intel says this can take several minutes, depending on the game and system configuration. Let the game’s shader processing reach 100% before judging performance; Intel says performance should stabilize after processing completes. Intel’s Arc shader-stuttering guidance describes this behavior.

This explanation fits brief stutter around the first session, not every recurring slowdown or crash. In its Need for Speed Heat guidance, Intel notes that a clean driver installation can clear cached shaders and bring back first-pass stutter. If stutter continues across multiple runs, Intel treats it as a separate issue and directs users to Customer Support. Intel’s Need for Speed Heat article describes that case.

Check the game and the exact driver release notes

Update the game

Check that the game is current, then look at its official support information for known problems matching your symptom. Intel’s general game troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for game updates and title-specific support information. Intel’s game troubleshooting article provides its general advice.

Match notes to your hardware and driver

Use the release notes for the driver version actually installed, not a different version or a broad search result about “Arc.” Check whether a listed issue matches your GPU family, game, and—where specified—graphics API. Known issues can apply only to particular hardware and titles.

For example, Intel’s April 21, 2026 release notes for Game On Graphics Driver 32.0.101.8735 Non-WHQL list a Fortnite launch system crash on Intel Core Series 3 integrated graphics, intermittent The Finals crashes on Core Ultra Series 3 integrated Arc graphics, and Mafia: The Old Country gameplay crashes on that same graphics family. These are examples tied to that dated release and those integrated graphics products; they do not establish the behavior of current drivers or discrete Arc A- and B-series cards. Read the 32.0.101.8735 release notes.

Choose the right driver source before reinstalling

The suitable driver depends on the computer and GPU. A laptop or prebuilt system may have a driver package from its manufacturer; a user-built desktop may use Intel’s package. Check the system maker’s support page, Intel Download Center, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant (Intel DSA), and confirm that the package supports your exact GPU and Windows version. Intel’s game troubleshooting guidance points to these driver sources.

Do not assume that one driver version is best for every Arc system. Compare the exact hardware, operating system, game, and release notes. Do not downgrade to a particular version unless the system maker or relevant official release notes support that choice for your configuration; there is no universal rollback version established here.

Check firmware and consider a clean driver installation

Check for an available BIOS update

Intel’s guidance for random crashes after Arc driver updates recommends checking whether a BIOS update is available. Use the instructions from your PC or motherboard manufacturer; BIOS update procedures vary by system, and Intel’s driver advice is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s steps. Intel’s Arc crash troubleshooting article covers BIOS checks and driver cleanup.

Clean-install the graphics driver if needed

If the game and matching release notes do not explain the issue, a clean installation is an option. Intel’s Arc crash guidance describes using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Windows Safe Mode, restarting into normal mode, then installing the same or a newer suitable driver. Follow Intel’s current clean-install guidance and choose the package for your system; Intel DSA can help identify a driver when you are unsure which package applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the appropriate driver for your exact GPU, operating system, and computer maker’s recommendations.
  2. Follow Intel’s instructions for using DDU in Safe Mode to remove the graphics driver.
  3. Restart into normal Windows and install the suitable driver package.
  4. Launch the game and allow shader processing to finish before assessing first-session performance.

Intel’s separate installer troubleshooting article advises disconnecting from the internet during a manual installation to prevent Windows Update from replacing the driver mid-process. That is installer-specific advice, not a universal requirement for every driver installation. For chipset or BIOS updates, Intel points users to the system or motherboard manufacturer. Intel’s driver-installer troubleshooting article explains this guidance.

Escalate persistent crashes or stutter with useful details

If crashes or stutter remain after the game is current, you have checked the exact release notes, and you have followed appropriate OEM or Intel driver steps, contact Intel Customer Support or your computer manufacturer. Include the GPU model, driver and Windows versions, game version, when the issue began, and whether it occurs on every run or in a particular scene. For consistent Need for Speed Heat stutter across multiple runs, Intel specifically directs users to Customer Support. See Intel’s escalation guidance.
