If a game became unstable immediately after you optimized it in the NVIDIA App, treat that change as the first suspect. Restore the game’s NVIDIA App settings to their defaults, disable the NVIDIA overlay and related capture features, then retest the same scene. If the problem began after a driver update, allow one run for shader compilation; persistent stutter, launch crashes, or visual artifacts justify rebuilding the shader cache. Driver reinstall or rollback and Windows 11 per-app GPU selection are the next checks when the timing points to those variables.

Work through the steps in order and change only one variable at a time. Record the game, GPU, driver version, NVIDIA App version, display mode, frame cap, and every setting changed before each test. That record prevents a “fix” from hiding the cause and gives support staff a reproducible description. These software checks cost nothing and should be completed before considering hardware purchases.

1. Establish a known-good baseline

Do not begin by changing several graphics options at once. The NVIDIA App can optimize supported games, apply driver-level options globally or per game, and restore those settings to default. A clean baseline tells you whether the tuning change caused the failure or merely exposed an existing problem.

Record the before state

Before resetting, open the NVIDIA App, select Graphics, and choose the affected game. Write down the values shown for any option that could alter rendering or frame pacing, including:

  • NVIDIA Reflex
  • Smooth Motion
  • Sharpening
  • Frame-rate limits
  • Any driver-level setting applied specifically to the game
  • Display mode, resolution, and in-game frame cap

Also note whether the failure is a crash to desktop, a freeze requiring a forced close, a crash during launch, a repeatable hitch in one scene, or general uneven frame delivery. “Stuttering” can mean shader compilation, a frame-cap conflict, an overlay hook, or a GPU-assignment problem, so the symptom and timing matter.

Record when the change was made and which driver was installed at that moment. A crash that starts immediately after pressing Optimize is a different lead from a hitch that appears only after a driver update. If possible, use the same save, benchmark, level, camera route, and test duration for every comparison. Consistent conditions make small changes in frame pacing easier to identify.

Restore the game’s defaults

  1. Open the NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
  2. Select the game that is crashing or stuttering.
  3. Use the page’s restore or default control to remove the NVIDIA App optimization and return the game profile to its default state.
  4. Start the game with the same resolution, display mode, and frame cap you recorded. Do not reapply the previous tuning yet.
  5. Test the same save, benchmark, level, or repeatable scene for a comparable interval. Record whether the crash or hitch occurs and when.

If stability returns at defaults, the tuning profile is the leading cause. Keep the default profile while you isolate individual features later; do not immediately restore the entire optimization with one click. A reset is the appropriate first remedy when only a per-game profile changed; it does not prove that the driver itself is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove overlay and capture variables

The NVIDIA App’s in-game overlay can inject recording, performance-monitoring overlays, and filters into the game. These functions are useful when stable, but they add another layer to a diagnostic test. Turn them off so the game is running without those injected features.

Disable the features for the test

  1. Open the NVIDIA App settings for the in-game overlay.
  2. Turn off the overlay itself, recording or instant replay, filters, and the statistics or performance-monitoring overlay.
  3. Close and relaunch the game rather than relying on an already-running process.
  4. Repeat the same scene and duration used for the baseline test.

If the crash disappears or frame delivery becomes smooth, re-enable one function at a time after the game has remained stable. Start with the feature you actually need, test again, and continue only if the result remains unchanged. The first feature that reproduces the failure is your leading suspect; leave it disabled and report its name with the game and driver details.

Do not judge this test from the title screen alone. Run long enough to reach the location, menu, or capture action that normally triggers the problem. Keep the game’s resolution, display mode, frame cap, and NVIDIA App profile unchanged while testing the overlay so the result has one clear interpretation.

3. Decide whether a stutter is normal shader compilation

NVIDIA explains that “Shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of game-play stuttering.” The shader cache stores those compiled shaders so later runs do not need to compile them again. Installing a new driver deletes the cache, so the first run after that installation can hitch while the game rebuilds it.

When waiting is reasonable

If the only change was a driver installation and the game otherwise launches normally, play through the affected areas once with the settings at the known-good baseline. A first-run hitch that diminishes on subsequent runs is consistent with normal cache regeneration. Keep the display mode and frame cap unchanged so you are comparing like with like.

Record whether the hitch occurs at the same effect, room, or camera movement and whether the second run is smoother. One temporary compilation pass is not evidence that the optimization profile failed. Avoid clearing the cache repeatedly during this test, because every deletion creates another first-run compilation cycle.

When a rebuild is justified

Do not keep waiting when stutter repeats on every run, a game began crashing at launch after the driver change, performance is lower than before, or visual artifacts appear. NVIDIA Support states that damaged shader-cache files can cause launch crashes, lower performance, or visual artifacts. In those cases, use the documented disable, delete, and regenerate sequence.

4. Rebuild the NVIDIA shader cache

This procedure removes the existing cache so the game and driver can create fresh files. It changes cache data, not your saved games, and should be performed with the game closed. Because the first launch afterward must compile shaders again, plan to evaluate the result over more than one run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
  2. Open Global Settings.
  3. Set Shader Cache Size to Off and apply the change.
  4. Reboot Windows.
  5. After the restart, close any game or launcher that may be using NVIDIA files.
  6. Delete the NVIDIA shader-cache files under the user AppDataLocalNVIDIA directory.
  7. Launch the game and allow it to rebuild the cache. The first run may stutter while shaders compile.
  8. Return to the NVIDIA App’s Graphics > Global Settings page and set Shader Cache Size back to Driver Default.
  9. Retest the same scene on at least two runs and record whether the hitch is reduced and whether launch stability returns.

Deleting only after disabling the cache and rebooting follows NVIDIA Support’s sequence. If files are in use, close the game and launcher completely before trying again rather than deleting random folders. The goal is a clean regeneration, not an indefinite disabled-cache configuration.

Choose an appropriate cache size

NVIDIA provides cache-size choices including Disabled, Unlimited, and fixed limits. A limit that is too small can evict shaders that are still in use and create additional gameplay stutters. Choose a limit large enough for the games you normally play while staying within the disk space you have available. Leave the setting at Driver Default unless you have a specific reason to manage it; do not use Off as a permanent troubleshooting state.

Unlimited is not automatically better: it uses available disk space, while a small fixed limit can force eviction and recompilation. If you experiment with a limit, change only that setting, repeat the same scene, and note whether the symptom changes. Return to Driver Default when the test is complete unless disk-space or eviction behavior gives you a documented reason to retain another value.

5. Test the driver revision

If the game still fails at default settings with the overlay disabled and a rebuilt cache, examine the driver timeline. A problem that starts immediately after one driver revision and remains across clean game settings points more strongly to the driver than to the NVIDIA App tuning profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall the current driver

  1. Open the NVIDIA App and go to the Drivers tab.
  2. Find the installed driver and open its three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Reinstall and complete the installation.
  4. Restart Windows if prompted, then retest with the game profile still at defaults and the overlay still disabled.

Reinstalling tests whether the driver installation itself was incomplete or corrupted without changing to a different revision. Keep notes on the driver version and the exact time the failure returns. A reinstall is different from a rollback: it keeps the same revision so you can separate installation integrity from a revision-specific incompatibility.

Roll back when the revision is the trigger

If symptoms began with a particular driver revision and persist after reinstalling that same revision, use the NVIDIA App’s Drivers controls to return to the previously installed driver when that option is available. Do not combine a rollback with a new optimization profile, overlay changes, or a cache-size experiment. After the rollback, reboot, leave the game at its known-good defaults, and repeat the same test.

A rollback is appropriate when the driver change is the common event across several failures. It is not the first response to a game that became unstable only after a per-game tuning change; reset that profile first. Keep the prior and current version numbers in your notes so support can identify the exact revision boundary.

6. Verify the GPU assigned by Windows 11

Laptops and multi-GPU desktops can launch a game on an unintended adapter. The game may appear to be using NVIDIA settings while Windows has assigned its executable to an integrated or lower-power GPU. Check the per-app assignment before changing more game options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the intended adapter

  1. Open Windows 11 Settings and go to System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Under Custom options for apps, locate the game. If it is not listed, add the game’s executable using the browse option.
  3. Select the game entry and open its Options.
  4. Choose the graphics-performance option that corresponds to the intended high-performance NVIDIA GPU.
  5. Save the setting, close the game completely, and launch it again.

Retest with the same display mode and frame cap used in the baseline. If the wrong adapter was selected, correcting it can change performance and stability without any NVIDIA App tuning. If the game is already assigned to the intended GPU, leave this setting alone while you continue isolating other variables. On a multi-GPU system, record which executable you assigned; launchers and the game itself can be separate entries.

7. Use a controlled re-enable process

Once the default profile, overlay-off test, cache rebuild, driver test, and GPU assignment check produce a stable run, add desired features back individually. This is slower than restoring a complete optimization, but it identifies the first incompatible setting.

  1. Re-enable one feature, such as DLSS, and launch the same test scene.
  2. Run long enough to reproduce the original failure window, not merely to reach the menu.
  3. Record the result and the exact value used.
  4. If stable, close the game and enable the next feature.
  5. If the crash or stutter returns, disable the last feature and verify the problem disappears on a second run.

For frame generation, Reflex, Smooth Motion, sharpening, and frame limits, test each setting with the others held constant. A frame-cap conflict can look like intermittent stutter; changing the cap and an upscaler simultaneously makes the result impossible to attribute. Re-enable recording, filters, and performance statistics separately from rendering options so an overlay hook is not confused with an image-quality setting.

8. Choose the right remedy for the symptom

Observed pattern First action Why this fits
Crash or stutter began immediately after NVIDIA App optimization Restore the affected game’s settings to default and retest with the overlay off The per-game profile is the first changed variable.
One hitchy first run after installing a driver, followed by smoother repeats Allow a run for shader compilation A new driver deletes the shader cache and the game may rebuild it.
Repeated stutter, launch crash, lower performance, or artifacts after a driver change Disable Shader Cache Size, reboot, delete cache files, relaunch, then return the setting to Driver Default Damaged cache files can produce all of these symptoms.
Failure tracks one driver revision even at game defaults Reinstall that driver; if it remains the trigger, roll back to the prior revision This tests installation integrity before changing hardware or game settings.
Performance is inexplicably low on a laptop or multi-GPU system Check Windows 11 per-app Graphics assignment The executable may be using an unintended adapter.
Game is stable until recording, filters, or performance widgets are enabled Leave the reproducing overlay feature disabled Injected overlay functions are isolated as the likely trigger.

Use the earliest matching row rather than performing every remedy at once. Resetting a profile and rebuilding a cache together can make the game appear fixed while leaving the true cause unknown. The sequence is deliberately ordered from the least disruptive, most directly timed change to broader driver and Windows checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Keep an evidence trail for support

When a problem survives the isolation sequence, provide a concise record instead of a list of unrelated tweaks. Include:

  • Game title and executable, including whether the crash occurs at launch or in a particular scene
  • GPU model and whether the system has an integrated second adapter
  • NVIDIA driver version before and after the failure
  • NVIDIA App version
  • Windows 11 version and the per-app GPU choice
  • The original NVIDIA App settings and the restored default state
  • Whether the in-game overlay, recording, filters, and performance widgets were disabled
  • Whether the shader cache was rebuilt and whether the first run differed from later runs
  • Display mode, resolution, frame cap, and the exact feature that reproduces the issue
  • The shortest repeatable sequence that causes the crash or hitch

Reproduce the issue with the game at defaults before submitting the report. Then identify the single feature or driver revision that brings it back. That gives the game or NVIDIA support channel a testable condition rather than a collection of simultaneous changes. Include whether reinstalling the same driver changed anything; that distinction helps separate a damaged installation from a revision regression.

10. Prevent the next tuning-related failure

  • Capture a screenshot or written list of the existing profile before applying an optimization.
  • Change one profile, driver, cache, overlay, or Windows GPU variable at a time.
  • Keep a repeatable test scene and the same frame cap for before-and-after comparisons.
  • Expect a possible first-run hitch after a driver installation, but treat repeated stutter, launch crashes, and artifacts as signs to investigate the cache.
  • Use the overlay only after the game is stable, and add recording, filters, and performance statistics separately.
  • After a cache rebuild, leave Shader Cache Size at Driver Default unless disk-space or eviction behavior gives you a documented reason to choose another limit.

What not to change during diagnosis

A replacement GPU, cable, cooling pad, or controller cannot be justified by this software-tuning symptom alone. Do not add hardware variables until the NVIDIA App profile, overlay, shader cache, driver revision, and Windows GPU assignment have been tested independently. Hardware troubleshooting may be appropriate for failures that occur in multiple unrelated games and applications, but that is a different pattern from a crash that begins directly after one NVIDIA App change. These software procedures require no purchase; only consider hardware investigation after the same failure is independent of the tuning, driver, cache, and GPU-selection variables.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my game stutter after a driver update?

Installing a new driver deletes the shader cache. One hitchy first run can be normal while shaders are rebuilt. Repeated stutter, launch crashes, lower performance, or visual artifacts warrant the documented cache rebuild.

Should I clear the NVIDIA shader cache?

Clear it when symptoms persist across runs or include launch crashes, lower performance, or artifacts, especially after a driver change. Set Shader Cache Size to Off, apply, reboot, delete the NVIDIA files under the user AppDataLocalNVIDIA directory, relaunch, and return the setting to Driver Default.

Should I roll back the driver immediately?

No. Reset the NVIDIA App game profile and test with overlays disabled first. Reinstall the current driver to test its installation; roll back only when the symptoms track that revision and persist at default game settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the game is using the wrong GPU?

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game executable, choose Options, and assign the intended high-performance NVIDIA GPU. Retest with the same display mode and frame cap.

Can I leave shader cache disabled to stop stutter?

No. Disabled caching can force shaders to compile repeatedly. After rebuilding, return Shader Cache Size to Driver Default unless a documented disk-space or eviction reason supports another setting.

What should I report to support?

Provide the game and executable, GPU model, driver and NVIDIA App versions, Windows 11 GPU assignment, original and default settings, overlay status, cache-rebuild result, display mode, frame cap, and the shortest repeatable failure sequence.

The Bottom Line

Start with the NVIDIA App change: record it, restore the affected game to defaults, and test with the overlay, recording, filters, and performance widgets off. Treat a single post-driver hitch as possible shader compilation, but rebuild the cache when stutter repeats or crashes, performance loss, or artifacts appear. Reinstall or roll back the driver only when the timeline implicates a revision, and verify Windows 11 is assigning the executable to the intended GPU. Re-enable features one at a time so the first reproducible failure identifies the real cause.
