Start with the exact chain error or transaction receipt, not a wallet’s generic failure toast. Then check the signing coldkey’s free TAO and fee headroom, verify the precise coldkey–hotkey–subnet position and units, and determine whether locks, collateral, or subnet pool conditions limit the operation. Do not retry until you know whether the transaction was rejected, failed on-chain, or succeeded without removing every position.
Capture the failure before retrying
Record the exact error text and, if available, the chain error name and transaction or extrinsic ID. Also note the wallet and version, network, signer coldkey, target hotkey, subnet ID, requested amount, and operation: stake, delegate, remove stake, or unstake-all. Bittensor’s chain-error catalog maps specific errors to failure classes, so use the exact name rather than guessing from a short wallet notification.
If there is a transaction receipt, establish whether the operation was rejected before inclusion or included with a dispatch error. A wallet message may not distinguish a signing or submission problem from validation or execution failure. Do not assume the position changed based on an ambiguous message; inspect the current balance and stake position.
Use the error to choose the first checks

Check free TAO and fee headroom
Use the signing coldkey’s free TAO balance, not just its total or staked balance. The free amount must cover the requested operation and leave room for the extrinsic fee. The insufficient-balance guide covers requests that exceed available free balance or cannot cover a fee.

The Learn Bittensor fee guide describes a 0.05% swap fee for stake and unstake operations, in addition to a transaction fee. Treat that as the value stated by the guide, not a guarantee that every operation has identical costs; review the current transaction preview and network behavior before retrying. The guide also says its described Alpha fee fallback is currently disabled.
Match the request to the position and its units
Confirm that the position belongs to the same coldkey and hotkey selected for the transaction, and that the intended subnet is selected. An unstake or move can fail when the request exceeds the amount held by that coldkey–hotkey position. Some stake may also be reserved by a conviction lock or registration collateral, so compare the request with the chain-reported amount available to remove rather than the displayed position alone. Subnet staking is not a one-to-one TAO withdrawal. TAO enters a subnet pool and the resulting stake is denominated in that subnet’s Alpha; unstaking sells Alpha back through the pool for TAO. Root stake is handled separately. Check the selected subnet, the denomination shown by the interface, and the available position before submitting. Pool prices affect the amount received. Bittensor explains the mechanism in its subnet staking guide.
Check locks, collateral, and subnet pool conditions
If the chain reports unavailable stake, determine whether a conviction lock or registration collateral is reserving some of it. For subnet positions, also check whether trading is enabled and whether the position is valid for the requested operation. An aggregate unstake-all can skip positions when trading is disabled or validation fails, so inspect subnet positions individually afterward instead of assuming every position was removed. A large subnet removal trades through the pool at its current state. The unstake-all documentation warns that Alpha is sold at current pool prices without limit protection against price impact. Review the quote or preview and any slippage controls the interface offers before submitting a large removal.

If the receipt does not explain the failure, keep the wallet name and version, signing method, network, extrinsic ID, and exact error text together for the wallet’s current instructions or support channel. A generic wallet message alone does not establish that the chain rejected the operation.

Bittensor documents proxy accounts as an operational option for staking actions in its proxy guide. A Learn Bittensor staking guide recommends keeping the primary coldkey in cold storage. Those recommendations do not establish that every wallet or hardware signer supports every staking transaction flow; check compatibility with your specific wallet and signing path.
