If Apple TV 4K will not finish setup, join Wi‑Fi, or show a stable picture, troubleshoot in this order: confirm power and the TV’s selected HDMI input, then isolate setup, network, and video symptoms separately. Most checks require no new equipment; test another cable only after reseating the one you have.
Connect Apple TV 4K and choose a setup method
Connect Apple TV to power and to the TV or display with an HDMI cable, turn on the display, and select the HDMI input for the port you used. Apple’s setup guidance specifies an HDMI 2.0-or-later compatible cable for 4K HDR; Apple says HDMI 2.1 is needed to access all Apple TV features. Actual port and format support can vary by TV, receiver, switch, and Apple TV generation, so check those devices’ manuals if a capability is unclear. Apple’s setup instructions explain the connection and on-screen flow.

Choose either option when prompted and follow the instructions on the display. If Wi‑Fi is unreliable and your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port, connecting it to the router is another way to get online during setup.
If setup is stuck or will not continue
- Unplug Apple TV from power, reconnect it, and try the setup screen again.
- If it still cannot get past a setup screen, connect to a different network, such as a personal hotspot, and complete setup there.
- After setup, open Settings and join your home Wi‑Fi network.

If Apple TV will not connect to Wi‑Fi
Work through the network checks before changing video settings; a Wi‑Fi connection failure and a blank HDMI picture are separate problems.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Network, select your Wi‑Fi network, and re-enter its password.
- If the password is rejected or it still will not connect, select the current network, choose Forget Network, then join it again and enter the password.
- Check that the router is powered and connected to the modem. Apple advises keeping Apple TV and the router in the same room if possible, but not placing Apple TV directly on or within 30 cm of the router. Avoid obstructions, especially metal.
- Restart Apple TV from Settings > System > Restart. Then unplug the router and modem, reconnect them, and allow them to restart.
- If your Apple TV has an Ethernet port, connect it to the router or modem and check for an update at Settings > System > Software Updates. Ethernet takes precedence over Wi‑Fi while connected. After updating, disconnect Ethernet and try Wi‑Fi again.
These steps follow Apple’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance. A wired connection is only an option on models with an Ethernet port.

If the screen is black, flickering, or losing its picture
Check the HDMI signal path
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both Apple TV and the display.
- Confirm that the display is set to the input for the connected HDMI port.
- Try another HDMI port on the display, then test another cable if available.
- If Apple TV is connected through an HDMI switch or AV receiver, connect it directly to the TV. If the picture returns, the intermediary or its connection is implicated; consult its manual for supported formats and setup.
For HDMI 2.1, Apple identifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; for HDMI 2.0, it identifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Those cable labels help when replacing a cable is warranted, but a purchase is not the first diagnostic step. Apple’s picture troubleshooting page covers these checks.
Cycle through supported resolutions
If the cable and input checks do not restore a picture, use the Apple TV remote to hold Menu and Volume Down together for five seconds. Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD cycle to a new resolution every 20 seconds; when a picture appears, select OK to keep that setting, or Cancel to stop the cycle. This is useful when the display and Apple TV are not agreeing on the current resolution.

Distinguish format switching from a persistent fault
A brief blank or flicker when playback starts or stops can occur while a TV changes formats. If the symptom matches that timing, open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content and review Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. Apple notes that these matching features can cause a short blank or flicker during a format change; a persistent black picture calls for the cable, input, port, and direct-connection checks above.

- Unplug the Apple TV power cord for 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Try a different wall outlet or power strip.
- If available, test another Apple TV power cord.
