Then check whether the connection uses stdio or HTTP, and verify the address, port, IP version and any HTTP validation or proxy rules.
Map the connection before changing settings
Write down the path as client or caller → server process → network namespace → address and port → transport. The MCP client might be a desktop app, a subprocess launcher, a gateway, a container, or a remote hosted assistant. The browser displaying the client UI may not be the component that connects to the server.
- Caller: Which exact process initiates the connection?
- Server: What starts the screenshot MCP server, and where does that command run?
- Boundary: Are either process inside Docker, behind a proxy, or on a remote machine?
- Transport: Is the server configured for stdio or HTTP?
- Target: For HTTP, what exact URL, path, hostname and port does the caller use?
Do not assume a port or server flag without identifying the package and its configuration. The MCP Apps testing guide uses http://localhost:3001/mcp as an example; that is not a universal MCP port or path. The guide explains the testing setup.
Check whether the server uses stdio or HTTP
Stdio: verify the launched subprocess
With stdio, the MCP client launches the server as a subprocess and exchanges MCP messages through standard input and output. There may be no HTTP URL or localhost connection to fix. Check that the client can start the configured command, that the executable and working directory are valid, and that required environment variables are available to the subprocess. The MCP specification permits logs on stderr; avoid diagnostic output on stdout, which is used for protocol messages. See the MCP transport specification, revision 2024-11-05.

HTTP: test the URL from the actual caller
For HTTP, capture the exact endpoint URL, including its path, and test it from the process that makes the request. A successful connection from your host terminal does not prove that a container or remote service can reach the same address.
Docker’s MCP gateway documentation distinguishes a remote endpoint URL from local stdio: local stdio runs a command on the host, while a remote endpoint is a URL the gateway connects to. Inspect where the gateway and server command actually execute, rather than inferring their location from the UI. See Docker’s MCP gateway documentation.

Fix the address for the caller’s network
Same machine
If the caller and HTTP server are genuinely on the same host and network namespace, loopback may be appropriate. Confirm the server is listening on the expected port and that the URL uses the path it actually serves. A service bound only to loopback will not necessarily be reachable through another interface or from a container.
Docker container
Inside a container, localhost normally refers to that container’s own network namespace. If the server runs on the host or in a different container, use an address reachable from the caller and configure the relevant port publishing or shared container network. The required address depends on the Docker environment; do not assume a particular hostname or host-gateway behavior.

Check both sides of any port mapping: the port where the process listens inside its environment and the port exposed to the caller. The MCP Inspector documentation also warns that its browser-facing sandbox URL and Docker port mapping must agree. Its settings are Inspector-specific, not universal screenshot-server settings. Remote hosted client
A workstation’s localhost address is not reachable from a separate remote service. The MCP Apps testing documentation states, “Remote hosts like Claude.ai cannot reach localhost.” For local testing, it documents running a local HTTP server, starting npx cloudflared tunnel --url http://localhost:3001, and configuring the remote host with the generated HTTPS URL plus the MCP endpoint path. The generated URL changes when cloudflared restarts. This is a documented testing approach, not a blanket production deployment recommendation. See the MCP Apps testing guide.

Verify the listener, port and IP version
- Confirm the server is running. Check its startup logs and confirm it reports a listener, if the implementation provides that information.
- Check the bind address. A server bound only to loopback inside a container may not accept connections arriving through the container’s network interface.
- Check the port at both ends. If a port is mapped, use the port reachable from the caller—not automatically the server’s internal port.
- Compare address families.
localhostmay resolve to IPv4127.0.0.1or IPv6::1. Confirm the caller’s destination and the listener’s bind family match. - Retry from the caller’s environment. A test from a different host, shell, container or browser is not equivalent.
The MCP Inspector README describes one IPv6 mismatch scenario on glibc Linux: Node may resolve localhost to IPv6 first while a forwarded client uses IPv4. If the service listens on only one family, the other connection can fail. Check the actual implementation and environment before applying an Inspector-specific workaround.
When a connection reaches HTTP but is rejected
If the request reaches the server, the failure may be an HTTP policy rejection rather than a routing problem. The MCP Python SDK documents DNS-rebinding protections that validate the Host header and, when present, the Origin header. In that SDK’s documented behavior, an unaccepted Host can produce HTTP 421 and an unaccepted Origin can produce HTTP 403. A client may report only a generic transport error, so inspect the server logs and response status. Allowlist only the hostnames and browser origins the deployment needs. When TLS terminates at a reverse proxy and the app serves HTTP behind it, check whether the application needs to trust forwarded headers. The Python SDK guide notes that this can be necessary to prevent generated redirects from changing an HTTPS endpoint to HTTP. Also verify the served endpoint path and slash behavior. These checks matter only when a proxy or TLS-termination setup is involved.
Use the error to narrow the next check
- Connection refused: Check whether the server is running and listening on the target address and port; verify that the caller is using the correct namespace and port mapping.
- Timeout: Test from the caller’s environment and check the network boundary, routing, published port or tunnel.
- Works on the host, fails in Docker: Recheck what
localhostrefers to inside the caller’s container and whether the server is reachable over the configured container or host network. - Works with an IP, fails with
localhost: Compare whether the name resolves to127.0.0.1or::1and which family the service listens on. - HTTP 421 or 403: If using the MCP Python SDK, inspect Host or Origin validation and the server’s logs.
- Redirect changes HTTPS to HTTP: If TLS ends at a reverse proxy, inspect forwarded-header trust and proxy configuration.
- Remote client cannot connect: A local-only address is not a remote endpoint. Use an appropriate reachable deployment or a tunnel for local testing.
- Stdio client reports a connection failure: Check whether the subprocess starts and its command, environment and protocol output; an HTTP localhost endpoint may not be involved.
Capture these details before changing a package-specific setting
The exact screenshot server, package version, MCP client, operating system and error are not specified here, so no particular port, environment variable, host flag or patch can be confirmed. For a focused diagnosis, record:
- the server package and version, and the client or gateway name;
- whether the transport is stdio or HTTP, plus the launch command or exact endpoint URL;
- where the caller and server process run, including container, proxy and tunnel details;
- the server’s bind address and port, the caller’s destination address and port, and any port mapping;
- the exact client error, server logs and, for HTTP, the response status and endpoint path.
