Start by turning the VPN off and checking whether ordinary internet access works. If it does, compare the VPN on your usual network with the VPN on another network, then check the service, server, protocol, and possible software conflicts. If this is a work or school VPN, avoid changing managed settings and send the administrator the exact error message or code.
First, determine whether the internet or the VPN is failing
- Disconnect the VPN and try loading a normal website. If it still will not load, troubleshoot the device’s internet connection, router, ISP, or network before changing VPN settings. IVPN also recommends confirming ordinary connectivity first: IVPN connection troubleshooting.
- Restart the VPN app and device. If appropriate, restart the modem or router too. On Apple devices, check that the date, time, and time zone are correct and install available software updates; Apple lists these among its network-connectivity checks: Apple’s VPN and third-party security software guidance.
- Test a different network. Try another Wi-Fi network or a phone’s mobile-data connection. If the VPN works there, the original network, its firewall, ISP, or public-network policy is a likely place to investigate. Apple recommends comparing networks, and Norton suggests trying another network or mobile data when its VPN remains at “Connecting”: Norton VPN connection troubleshooting.
- Check the service and account. Look at the VPN provider’s current status and help pages, and confirm you are using the correct account or sign-in identifier. Provider-specific checks vary; IVPN, for example, advises checking server availability and account ID: IVPN connection troubleshooting.
- Try another server, then a supported protocol. Make one change at a time and retry, so you can tell which change mattered. A particular endpoint may be unavailable, or the network may restrict a tunnel method. Not every VPN app exposes the same servers or protocols. Norton and Bitdefender describe changing protocol in applicable cases, and Bitdefender also recommends testing another server: Norton VPN connection troubleshooting; Bitdefender VPN error troubleshooting. If a change worsens the problem, restore the original setting.
- Check for conflicts. Look for another active VPN, proxy, firewall, security filter, or network extension. These can affect the same connection path. Apple advises checking installed VPNs, profiles, firewalls, and filters; Bitdefender also includes competing VPNs and firewall settings in its checks. On a managed device, ask your organization before disabling or removing anything.
Use the error message to narrow the cause
Record the full message or code and when it appeared. A timeout, authentication failure, or tunnel that connects without carrying traffic points toward different parts of the connection; work VPN codes in particular depend on how the organization configured its deployment.
| Symptom or code | What it can indicate | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| “Connecting” indefinitely or disconnecting immediately | Unstable base internet, a network restriction, an unavailable endpoint, or protocol compatibility trouble are possibilities in provider guidance. | Confirm internet with the VPN off, compare another network, then try a different available server or supported protocol. |
| Windows error 809 | Microsoft documents the message: “The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding.” For relevant Always On VPN/IPsec configurations, an intervening firewall, NAT, or router may block communication; Microsoft identifies UDP ports 500 or 4500 among possible causes. | Give the code and failure time to the administrator. The port guidance applies to relevant configurations, not every consumer VPN. |
| Windows error 800 | Microsoft associates this Always On VPN error with an unreachable server or unsuccessful tunnel negotiation, including an IPsec security-parameter mismatch. | Ask the administrator to verify the configured tunnel type and deployment settings. |
| Windows error 812 | The server’s authentication method may not match the method in the VPN client profile, according to Microsoft. | Send the exact error to the administrator rather than repeatedly changing the password. |
| Windows error 13801 | Microsoft’s examples include an expired or unsuitable server certificate, missing client trust roots, or a server name that does not match its certificate. | Ask the VPN administrator or provider to check certificate and server configuration. |
| VPN says connected, but internet or internal services do not work | The tunnel may be established while routing, DNS, or address-pool configuration prevents traffic from reaching its destination. Microsoft lists DHCP or VPN server address-pool configuration among possible causes. | Report what is unreachable and whether the failure affects public internet, internal services, or both; the administrator may need to inspect assigned network settings and routing. |
Microsoft’s error codes and configuration checks are for Windows remote-access and Always On VPN deployments, not a universal codebook for personal VPN apps: Microsoft remote-access VPN troubleshooting and Microsoft Always On VPN troubleshooting.
For work or school VPNs, stop before changing managed settings
Authentication policies, certificates, tunnel types, ports, and firewall rules may be controlled by the organization. Do not edit certificates, alter authentication methods, or change firewall rules unless the administrator tells you to. Microsoft documents server-side and policy causes that cannot necessarily be fixed on the user’s device alone.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Send the administrator the exact error text or code, the time it occurred, and whether the VPN worked on another network.
- Include whether ordinary internet worked with the VPN disconnected and whether the tunnel connected but failed to carry traffic.
- Ask the administrator or VPN provider to check service status, authentication policy, certificates, server configuration, and relevant logs.
When an Apple device has broader network problems
If Wi-Fi or other network services fail around the same time as a VPN or security app, use Apple’s checks: verify date and time, update software, restart the device, test another network, and identify installed VPN or security profiles and filters. Treat a network reset as a later option rather than an early fix; on a managed device, consult the organization before changing profiles or managed settings. See Apple’s connectivity guidance.

Compare three pairs: internet with the VPN off versus on; the original network versus another network; and the original server or protocol versus one supported alternative. Change one variable per attempt and note the result. That helps distinguish a device or service issue from a network restriction or a managed configuration problem without making unrelated system changes.
