To trim a video that is already on YouTube, use YouTube Studio on a computer: open Content, select the video, choose Editor, then use Trim & cut. Adjust the blue selection to keep the section you want, or choose New cut to remove a section from the middle. Preview carefully before saving: YouTube says the edit keeps the video’s URL, views, and comments, but saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.”
Trim an uploaded video in YouTube Studio
This is the built-in route for making a straightforward correction to your own existing upload without uploading a replacement. YouTube’s instructions apply to videos shorter than six hours. The workflow described here is for YouTube Studio on a computer; the interface may change.
- Open the video: Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content from the left menu, and click the video you want to edit.
- Open the editor: Select Editor in the video’s menu.
- Choose the operation: Select Trim & cut. To shorten the beginning or end, drag the blue box edges to cover the portion you want to keep. To remove material from the middle, select New cut and mark the portion to remove; YouTube indicates that cut with a red box.
- Set precise points if needed: Enter timestamps for the boundaries instead of relying only on dragging. Use the preview to check the edit, including the transition between the parts that remain.
- Review before saving: Undo an individual cut while the changes are still pending, or discard the pending changes if the edit is not right. Save only after checking the full result.
YouTube says an edit made this way preserves the video’s URL, view count, and comments. That makes Studio useful when you need to correct an existing upload rather than create a separately uploaded version. It is not a full pre-upload editing timeline.
Check restrictions and protect your source
- Duration: YouTube Help says Studio trimming applies to videos shorter than six hours. If the video is six hours or longer, this workflow may not be available.
- Views and prior editing: YouTube says unedited videos with over 100,000 views may not allow saved edits other than face blurring. The stated restriction does not apply to channels in the YouTube Partner Program.
- Saved edits: As of June 2025, YouTube Help says changes saved in Studio Editor cannot be undone using Revert to original. Keep a separate copy of the original file if preserving an untouched source matters, and do not treat the editor preview or an unsaved edit as a backup.
These conditions and the editing interface can change. Check YouTube’s current “Trim your videos” Help page if an option is missing or the video does not meet the stated limits.

Choose an editor based on the job
The key distinction is whether you are correcting an upload that is already live or constructing a fuller edit before uploading. A dedicated desktop editor is not necessary for a basic post-upload trim.

These options serve different workflows; the documented features do not establish that one is objectively easiest or best for every creator. If the uploaded video only needs its start, end, or a middle section removed, begin in YouTube Studio. Use a desktop editor when you need a fuller timeline or creative changes before upload.
