VidCutter is a lightweight desktop cutter and joiner for Linux. It is designed for selecting sections of a video, splitting them into clips, and joining selected clips without the multi-track timeline of a full video editor. Install the package format that matches your distribution, open the file, mark the segments on VidCutter’s timeline, then export or join the marked clips. Exact button names can vary by release, so use the labels shown by your installed version.

What VidCutter is—and what it is not

The VidCutter project describes the application as “A modern yet simple multi-platform video cutter and joiner.” Its focus is straightforward cutting, splitting, and joining rather than effects, compositing, or multi-track editing. The Flathub package documents FFmpeg-based lossless cutting and joining, libmpv playback, MediaInfo metadata, timeline thumbnails, chapter support, audio and subtitle stream selection, and an optional SmartCut mode. These features are package documentation; another distribution’s build may bundle different library versions.

For a full timeline with multiple video and audio tracks, transitions, titles, or extensive effects, use a dedicated non-linear editor instead. VidCutter is a better fit when you want to remove unwanted sections or assemble a few excerpts quickly.

Read the upstream installation notes and the release assets for the current commands and files.

Flatpak setup

  1. Install Flatpak using your distribution’s package manager if it is not already present.
  2. Add Flathub if your system has not configured it yet.
  3. Run flatpak install flathub com.ozmartians.VidCutter.
  4. Start it from your desktop application menu or with flatpak run com.ozmartians.VidCutter.

  3. Launch it by double-clicking or with ./VidCutter*.AppImage.

The controls can be rearranged between releases. Look for the media-open control, playback controls, timeline, marker controls, and the command that adds a marked segment to the clip list. The following workflow describes the operation without assuming an exact button position.

  1. Open the source. Choose VidCutter’s open-media command and select the video. Wait for playback and timeline thumbnails or metadata to finish loading.
  2. Find the start. Play, seek, or use frame navigation to place the playhead at the beginning of the section you want. Use the visible start-marker command.
  3. Find the end. Move the playhead to the end of that section and use the end-marker command. Confirm the highlighted range or start/end time readout.
  4. Add the segment. Use the control that adds the marked range to the clip list. Repeat the previous steps for every section you want to keep.
  5. Reorder or remove selections. Review the clip list and use its move or delete controls if the release provides them. Do not assume the source timeline order changes automatically when clips are added.
  6. Save or join. Use the export/save command for a single selected clip, or the join/merge command when you want the marked clips assembled into one output. Choose an output filename and destination, then wait for the progress indicator to finish.

Before deleting the original, open the resulting file and check its beginning, end, audio, subtitles, and expected clip order.

Lossless cutting and SmartCut

Flathub describes ordinary cutting and joining as lossless and identifies SmartCut as an optional frame-accurate mode that is disabled by default. Lossless operation is fast when the cut aligns with points the source codec can copy cleanly; SmartCut is the setting to investigate when you need more precise frame boundaries. The exact setting name and location depend on the build, so check VidCutter’s preferences or export dialog rather than copying a control path from another release.

Audio, subtitles, chapters, and metadata

The Flathub listing documents chapter support and selection of audio and subtitle streams. If your file contains multiple tracks, inspect the stream controls before exporting and confirm that the output contains the intended language or commentary track. MediaInfo powers the media-information option in supported packages. If a stream, chapter, or metadata field is missing in your build, compare the package channel and version before assuming the source file is at fault.

When a video will not open or export

  • Check the package first. A Flatpak, AppImage, Snap, and distribution package can carry different FFmpeg, libmpv, Qt, and permission behavior.
  • Test a local file. Sandboxed packages may need access to a removable drive or nonstandard directory; copy the file to your home folder as a diagnostic.
  • Check audio assumptions. The upstream issue tracker contains reports involving clips without audio and merge or progress behavior. These are individual reports, not proof that every silent clip fails.
  • Check current reports. There are also open reports of Flatpak startup failure on Debian testing and startup problems after Linux Mint updates. Consult the current issue tracker with your distro, package channel, and VidCutter version.
  • Verify the output. If playback appears correct but the saved file is incomplete, try a short test segment, a different destination, and the other export mode exposed by your build.

Running VidCutter from Python source

Source execution is a separate route from installing a packaged release. Upstream requires working libmpv and FFmpeg installations, plus pyopengl, simplejson, and a working PyQt5/Qt5 setup. MediaInfo is required for the media-information option. Packaged releases may bundle or provide these components differently, so do not install the source dependencies merely because you installed the Flatpak or AppImage.

Practical limits and safety checks

  • “Any video” is not a guarantee: container, codec, damaged files, permissions, and the selected package’s libraries all affect compatibility.
  • Keep the original until you have checked the exported file on the players and devices that matter to you.
  • Record the distribution, installation channel, and displayed VidCutter version when seeking help; the upstream 6.0.5.1 release asset and Flathub’s 6.0.5.4 listing are not the same build record.

For commands, supported package routes, and release files, use the VidCutter README, releases page, and Flathub listing.
