Sign in to the replacement console with the same account that bought your games, update both systems, and use the platform’s transfer or redownload tools. Your digital licenses normally stay with that account; saved progress is a separate migration job. Keep the old console intact until games, downloadable content (DLC), and saves all work on the new one.
The exact process depends on the platform. The documented procedures below cover PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. The account, compatibility, backup, and verification principles also apply when moving between other consoles, but their menu names and transfer rules must be checked against the manufacturer’s current instructions.
What transfers, and what does not
A digital purchase is an account entitlement, not a permanent property of one piece of hardware. Sign in on the new console with the purchasing account and its library should become available for download. Nintendo states that game save data, digital games, and downloadable content are tied to the Nintendo Account; PlayStation exposes purchased digital games through the same account’s Game Library.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Account access: recover the email address, password, two-factor authentication method, and any platform passcode used by the purchasing account.
- Game and DLC installation: transfer existing installation data where supported, or redownload it from the destination console’s library or eShop. Redownloading is normal and does not mean you bought the game again.
- Save data: move local saves with a console-to-console wizard or restore them from supported cloud storage. A license transfer and a save transfer are not the same operation.
Compatibility is another independent check. Sony documents supported PS4 games on PS5 and warns that some functionality can be absent. Nintendo advises checking individual Switch software for compatibility on Switch 2. A title can therefore belong to your account yet still require a compatible edition, an update, or a different way to access a feature.
Prepare both consoles before moving anything
Preparation prevents the most expensive mistake: erasing the source console before discovering that a save, account, or DLC entitlement was not available elsewhere.
- Confirm the purchasing account. On the old console, identify which account owns each digital game. Verify the login email, password, two-factor authentication, and recovery method. If several people use the console, record which user owns each purchase.
- Update both systems. Install the latest available system software on the old and new consoles. Transfer wizards can fail or omit features when one system is substantially out of date.
- Use reliable internet. Connect both consoles to a stable network and keep them powered during the transfer. A wired connection is useful when the platform supports it, but an external drive or cable is not automatically required.
- Check compatibility and editions. Look up each important game’s support status on the destination hardware. Confirm that DLC belongs to the same purchasing account and that region or edition differences will not block access.
- Back up saves first. Use the platform’s supported cloud service or local transfer. For valuable progress, do not rely solely on a copy that will be deleted from the source as soon as a transfer completes.
- Leave the old console signed in and available. You may need it to authorize a transfer, resynchronize trophies, retry a save copy, or identify an account.
- Plan storage. Check free space on the destination. A library entitlement can be restored even when there is not enough room to install every game at once.
Transfer a PlayStation 4 library to PlayStation 5
Sony’s documented PS4-to-PS5 procedure uses both consoles, the same PlayStation account, current system software, and the same network. The PS5 provides the transfer controls.
Run the console-to-console transfer
- Sign in to the PS4 and PS5 with the same PlayStation account that purchased the games.
- Update the system software on both consoles.
- Synchronize your trophies on the PS4 before starting. This ensures recently earned trophies are associated with your account.
- Connect both consoles to the same network. A commercially available LAN cable can make a same-network transfer faster, according to Sony.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.
- Follow the prompts to select the PS4 and the games, applications, and other data to move. Keep both systems powered until the wizard reports completion.
- Afterward, open the PS5 Game Library and check the purchased titles. Sony says digital games can be downloaded there even when you did not move their installed files.
The transfer is optional for the licenses themselves. If the old console is unavailable, signing in to the same account on the PS5 and downloading eligible games from Game Library is the normal fallback. You will still need a separate method for saves that were not included in the transfer.
Use USB extended storage when appropriate
Sony documents a USB extended-storage drive as a way to access transferred PlayStation game data. This can avoid downloading an already-installed game again, provided the drive is compatible and contains the required data. A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage must be copied to PS5 console storage before it can be played. Check the drive’s current compatibility and capacity requirements before relying on it.

Move PlayStation saves and cloud data
PlayStation Plus cloud storage can upload saves on the old console and download them on the new one. The usual sequence is:
- On the old console, upload the desired saved data to PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- On the PS5, sign in to the same PlayStation account and download the saves from cloud storage.
- Launch the installed game and verify that the expected profile and progress appear before deleting anything from the PS4.
Sony distinguishes saves created in streamed games from saves created in downloaded games. Do not assume that progress from a streamed session is automatically present when you install a downloaded copy; check the relevant save location and restore the correct file.
Transfer a Nintendo Switch library to Switch 2
Nintendo recommends a system transfer when replacing a Switch with a Switch 2. The transfer can move Nintendo Accounts, user profiles, save data, and eShop purchases. A full transfer can remove the moved information from the original console, so read the confirmation screens carefully and keep the source powered until the process finishes.
Use the full system-transfer wizard
- Connect both consoles to the internet and update their system software.
- Place the consoles near each other and connect them to power. Do not interrupt the transfer by closing the lid, removing power, or changing network settings.
- On the Switch and Switch 2, start the system-transfer option from System Settings and follow Nintendo’s on-screen instructions.
- Link the same Nintendo Account to the corresponding users when the wizard requests it. Account ownership determines which digital purchases and DLC become available.
- Select the full transfer when you are replacing the old console and want Nintendo Accounts, profiles, saves, and eShop purchases moved together.
- Wait for both consoles to confirm completion. Because a full transfer can remove moved information from the source, do not factory-reset or give away the old unit until you have tested the destination.
Software installation may still require a download after the account and purchase records arrive. Open the destination eShop or software library, sign in with the owning account, and redownload eligible titles.
If the original Switch is unavailable
Nintendo’s fallback is to sign in to the Nintendo Account on the new console and redownload eligible software. This restores account-linked purchases, but it cannot recover a local save that was never transferred or backed up. Review each game’s save-support options before assuming that progress will return with the download.

Use Nintendo digital games on more than one console
Nintendo’s multi-console rules distinguish account ownership from the way a title is authorized on a particular device. Digital games and DLC remain tied to the Nintendo Account. Virtual game cards can be loaded on up to two consoles. On other consoles, the Online License setting requires an internet connection and limits access for other users.
That means a second console may show the purchase in the account yet behave differently when it is offline or when another user tries to launch the game. Load the virtual game card on the console that should play offline, or use the online-license method with an active internet connection when the game is being accessed elsewhere. Check the account and user shown on the launch screen if a title appears locked.
Move Nintendo save data separately
Nearby save transfer
Nintendo’s nearby save-data feature is designed for two consoles that are close together. Both need internet access, and the users on each console must be linked to the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo says this local feature does not require Nintendo Switch Online.
- Connect both consoles to the internet and place them near each other.
- Open the save-data transfer controls on the source and destination consoles.
- Select the user and game save to send, then choose the receiving console when prompted.
- Wait for the confirmation on both systems and launch the game on the destination to verify the progress.
The source save is deleted after it is sent. Use this method only when you intend to move the save, not copy it while retaining the original. If you need a safety net, create a supported cloud backup first.
Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud
Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud can back up and restore supported titles. Availability is title-dependent, so inspect the game’s support information rather than assuming every save is included. Back up on the old console, sign in with the same Nintendo Account on the new console, and restore the cloud copy before opening the game for the first time.

Redownload games and restore DLC correctly
After an account transfer, a game may be absent from the home screen simply because its installation files were not copied. Use the destination library or eShop purchase history to start a fresh download. Keep the destination connected to the internet until the download and required updates finish.
- Check the owning account: if a game is missing, switch to the account that bought it rather than purchasing it again.
- Check the edition: standard, deluxe, physical-code, and region-specific versions can have different DLC entitlements.
- Install base game updates first: DLC may not appear in-game until the matching title update is installed.
- Verify add-ons individually: open the game’s manage-content or add-on screen and confirm that each expected expansion is installed.
- Test an offline launch: Nintendo’s online-license mode can require an internet connection, while a loaded virtual game card is intended for the console authorized to use it offline.
Do you need an external drive or Ethernet cable?
No accessory is universally required. The platform’s built-in transfer and redownload tools can work over a normal internet connection. Accessories are helpers for particular situations:
- USB extended-storage drive for PS5: useful for accessing transferred PlayStation game data. PS5 games on that drive must be copied to PS5 console storage before play. Confirm current drive compatibility and capacity before buying or reusing one.
- LAN cable: Sony says a commercially available LAN cable can speed a same-network PS4-to-PS5 transfer. It is optional when both consoles already have a stable network connection.
- Nintendo Switch Online membership: useful for cloud-save backup and restore for supported games. It is not required for Nintendo’s nearby save-transfer feature.
Verify the new console before retiring the old one
Use a deliberate test rather than checking only whether the home screen looks familiar.
- Sign in with the purchasing account and confirm the expected profile is present.
- Open the game library or eShop purchase history and confirm several representative titles.
- Launch at least one transferred or redownloaded game and verify that updates complete.
- Check a title with DLC and open its in-game add-on or downloadable-content menu.
- Load saves from each migration method you used: local transfer, cloud restore, or a copied installation.
- Test a game that matters most to you, such as one with hundreds of hours of progress, before testing less important titles.
- For Nintendo, test the intended offline or online-license behavior on the console and user who will play.
- Only after these checks should you deactivate, factory-reset, sell, recycle, or give away the old console.
Troubleshooting common transfer failures
The new console says I must buy the game again
Stop at the purchase screen. Sign out and back in with the account that originally bought the title, then refresh the destination library or eShop purchase history. A different family member’s profile may be using the console while the entitlement belongs to another account. If the title is still absent, check region, edition, and platform compatibility before paying again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe game downloaded but my progress is missing
Recheck the save step. A redownload restores software, not necessarily local progress. On PlayStation, restore the correct PlayStation Plus cloud save or complete the console data transfer; also account for Sony’s distinction between streamed-game and downloaded-game saves. On Nintendo, use the nearby transfer or supported Save Data Cloud restore. Do not send another Nintendo nearby transfer casually, because the source save is deleted after sending.

DLC is locked or missing
Confirm that the DLC was purchased by the account currently signed in, install the base game’s updates, and inspect the game’s add-on management screen. If the destination edition or region differs, compatibility may not be automatic. Test the DLC only after the base game reaches its current version.
The transfer stops or takes too long
Keep both consoles on power, verify that they are on the same network when the platform requires it, and reduce competing network traffic. On PS4-to-PS5 transfers, a LAN cable can improve speed. If the transfer repeatedly fails, use the account-based redownload path and restore saves separately rather than repeatedly interrupting the wizard.
The old console is already gone
Sign in on the new console with the purchasing account and redownload eligible games. Recover saves only from a supported cloud backup or a save transfer that was completed before the old console disappeared. A license can be restored from the account even when an unbacked local save cannot.

Final safety rule
Digital purchases are usually recoverable through the account that bought them; unverified saves are not. Finish the account sign-in, compatibility check, DLC test, and save restore on the new console before you wipe the old one.
