Xbox One saves usually move to Xbox Series X or Series S through Xbox cloud synchronization, not by copying files to a USB drive. Connect the old console to Xbox network, let the game finish saving, then sign in to the new console with the same Microsoft/Xbox account and start the compatible game. Xbox 360 saves require an additional check: the game must be backward compatible and the save must already exist in Xbox cloud storage.
What transfers, and what does not
The transfer path depends on where the save was created and whether the game is supported on the destination console.
| Save origin | Destination | Required path | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Xbox Series X or Series S | Cloud synchronization under the same Microsoft/Xbox account | The title must support the relevant Xbox One-to-Series X|S relationship. |
| Xbox 360 | Xbox Series X or Series S | A supported backward-compatible title retrieves the save from Xbox cloud storage | A save that exists only on the 360’s local hard drive or memory unit cannot be retrieved by the Series console. |
| Installed game or app | Xbox Series X or Series S | Network transfer or compatible USB storage | Moving an installation does not itself move, convert, or repair saved progress. |
Xbox’s backward-compatibility documentation says that saves made on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S can move to another Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console through the cloud. Microsoft’s save-roaming requirements also depend on the title supporting the platform relationship and the player being signed in to Xbox network.

For Xbox 360, the newer console runs the backward-compatible version of the game. It can retrieve a cloud copy associated with the same account, but it cannot see a save stranded only on the old 360’s local storage.

Before you start
Have both consoles, the game license or disc, and the account that created the save available. Connect the old and new consoles to Xbox network, and check the title’s compatibility before troubleshooting storage. If several people use the same Xbox, write down the exact account and profile that owns the progress. Also identify whether you previously played the Xbox One version, a backward-compatible Xbox 360 version, or a separate Series X|S edition; those versions may not share identical save behavior.
Do not erase the old console, remove its profile, or format its storage until the destination loads a recognizable checkpoint. A successful game launch alone is not enough: the title could have created a new local profile or loaded a different account.
Transfer an Xbox One save to Series X or Series S
1. Prepare the Xbox One
- Connect the Xbox One to Xbox network and sign in to the account that owns the save.
- Open the game and play, or load the relevant profile, until the most recent progress has finished saving.
- Keep the console connected while the save synchronizes. Do not erase the profile, reset the console, or remove the account at this stage.
- If the game has several profiles or slots, note which profile and checkpoint you expect to see on the new console. This makes verification easier later.
There is no separate save-file export required for the normal Xbox One-to-Series process. The important event is that the latest local save reaches Xbox cloud storage while the correct account is online. If you have just completed a mission or changed settings, remain in the game long enough for its normal save operation to finish rather than immediately powering down.
2. Sign in on the Series console
- Start the Xbox Series X or Series S and connect it to Xbox network.
- Sign in with the identical Microsoft/Xbox account used on the Xbox One. A different account can have the same game installed but will not present the original account’s cloud save.
- Install the game, or insert its disc if you are using a Series X and the title supports disc installation. Series S is digital-only and cannot accept an Xbox One or Xbox 360 game disc.
- Launch the compatible title. The console should check for the cloud save as the game starts.
- If a cloud-save synchronization prompt appears, read the timestamps or device labels carefully and accept the copy that contains the expected progress. Do not overwrite a known-good cloud save with an unverified local copy.
3. Confirm the correct checkpoint
Load the profile or slot you used on the Xbox One and check a distinctive checkpoint, inventory item, level, or other piece of progress. A game can open successfully while loading a different profile, so reaching the title screen is not enough proof that the migration worked.
Keep the Xbox One available until this check succeeds. Only after the expected save opens on Series X|S should you reset, sell, or give away the old console.
Move an Xbox 360 save to Series X or Series S
Check the game first
Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, not every title released for those systems. Compatibility is title-specific, and features can vary. Confirm that the exact game appears on Xbox’s backward-compatibility list before spending time looking for a save that the Series console cannot run.
Make sure the save is in Xbox cloud storage
An Xbox 360 save stored only on the console’s local hard drive or a memory unit is not available to the Series console. The save must have an Xbox-cloud copy associated with the account. If the 360 has been offline or the game has never completed a cloud synchronization, reconnect the old console, sign in to the account that owns the save, and allow the game and its save system to operate while connected before attempting the move.
The exact storage screens can differ between the original 360 software and later system updates. The requirement does not change: the copy needed by Series X|S is the cloud copy, not merely the local file. If the only surviving copy is on removable 360 storage, do not assume that plugging that device into a Series console will expose the save; the supported route is Xbox cloud storage through a compatible title.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

Launch the backward-compatible version
- Sign in to Series X or Series S with the same Microsoft/Xbox account used for the 360 save.
- Install or insert the supported game. On Series S, use a digital license or download; a 360 disc cannot be inserted.
- Start the title and allow the Xbox 360 backward-compatibility environment to retrieve the cloud save.
- Accept the synchronization prompt only after checking that it refers to the expected account and game.
- Load the old profile and verify a recognizable checkpoint before touching the old console’s storage.
If the game is not on the backward-compatibility list, there is no supported save path to that Series console through the backward-compatible environment. Installing unrelated files from a USB drive will not change that compatibility status.
Cloud sync, network transfer, and USB storage compared
| Method | What it is for | What it does not do | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud save synchronization | Roams saved progress between supported consoles tied to the same account | Does not make an unsupported game compatible or merge unrelated accounts | Use this for Xbox One and Xbox 360 saved progress. |
| Network transfer | Copies installed games and apps from one nearby Xbox to another | Does not guarantee that a save is uploaded, converted, or associated with the right account | Useful when both consoles are available and you want to avoid downloading a large installation again. |
| USB external storage | Stores or moves installations and compatible backward-compatible games; Xbox Wire describes USB 3.1 storage support for Series X|S | Is not a standalone save-backup device for this migration | Helpful when downloads are slow or bandwidth is limited. Saved progress still depends on cloud synchronization. |
Xbox Wire’s 2020 storage guide explains that Xbox One, backward-compatible Xbox 360, and original Xbox games can be played directly from a compatible external hard drive. That statement concerns the installed game, not an independent save archive. Copying a game package to an external drive can save download time, but it cannot create a missing cloud save.
Network transfer and an Xbox external hard drive solve an installation problem: they can reduce a large download when both consoles are available or when home bandwidth is limited. They do not bypass account sign-in, title compatibility, or the requirement that the latest progress be in Xbox cloud storage. Do not buy a drive expecting it to function as a portable save backup for this migration.

Compatibility and edition caveats
Backward compatibility is selective
Series X|S runs Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. The word “selected” matters: support is determined per title. A disc or digital purchase from an older generation does not by itself prove that the game runs on Series X|S or that its save relationship is supported.
Xbox One version versus a separate Series edition
Some games expose an Xbox One version and a distinct optimized Series X|S edition. Do not assume that moving the installed Xbox One files with network transfer or USB automatically converts the save for the separate edition. Microsoft’s save-roaming requirements depend on the title’s supported platform relationship. The game publisher’s implementation determines whether progress carries between those editions, whether it uses a shared save system, or whether an in-game import is required.
If the library shows more than one version, first launch the version you previously played when possible. If you intend to switch to an optimized edition, look for that game’s own migration or import instructions and verify the result before deleting the older installation. A copied package cannot repair an edition mismatch.
Disc ownership and Series S
Series X has a disc drive, but the disc still needs to represent a supported game. Series S is digital-only. If your only license is an Xbox One or Xbox 360 disc, you need an eligible digital license to play that title on Series S; the disc cannot be used as the installation or license source.

The old console never uploaded the latest local save
A game can display recent progress locally while the cloud still has an older checkpoint. Return to the old console, connect it to Xbox network, open the game, and let the latest save complete while online. Do not wipe the console until the new system shows the expected checkpoint.

The accounts do not match
Cloud saves follow the Microsoft/Xbox account, not simply the console or the installed copy of a game. Compare the account identity on both consoles, including cases where several household members use the same device. Sign out of an unintended account before launching the title again.
The title is unsupported
For Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, check the backward-compatibility list for the exact title. An unsupported game will not expose its old save through the Series backward-compatibility environment.
You launched a different edition
If the Series console installed an optimized edition instead of the Xbox One or backward-compatible edition you used before, its save relationship may differ. Check the game’s version or edition in the library and follow any title-specific import process. Do not infer that a copied installation has converted the save.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Synchronization failed or presented a conflict
Reconnect both consoles to Xbox network and restart the title after confirming the account. When a conflict prompt appears, compare the listed dates or device sources. Choose the cloud copy only when it contains the progress you need; if the choices are unclear, stop rather than replacing a potentially newer save. Microsoft materials establish the account, cloud, and compatibility prerequisites, but there is no single universal repair procedure for every game.
The Xbox 360 save is local only
If the save exists only on a 360 hard drive or memory unit, the Series console has nothing to retrieve. The old save must be represented in Xbox cloud storage and the game must be supported. A USB copy of the installed game cannot substitute for that cloud requirement.
A safe migration checklist
- Record the Microsoft/Xbox account used for the old save.
- Confirm that the destination console is online.
- Check backward compatibility for every Xbox 360 or original Xbox title.
- On Xbox One, open the game while online and allow the latest progress to finish saving.
- For Xbox 360, verify that the needed save has a cloud copy rather than only local storage.
- Sign in to Series X|S with the identical account.
- Install the correct game edition and launch it.
- Review any synchronization prompt before accepting a copy.
- Load the expected profile and checkpoint.
- Only then reset, sell, or erase the old console.
Illustrative migration scenarios
Xbox One digital game to Series X
The old Xbox One is online and uses the same account as the Series X. After the game finishes saving, the player installs the compatible title on Series X, launches it, accepts the matching cloud copy, and verifies the latest checkpoint. No USB drive is needed for the save.
Xbox 360 disc game to Series S
The player first confirms that the title is backward compatible and that the 360 save exists in Xbox cloud storage. Because Series S has no disc drive, the player uses an eligible digital license, signs in with the original account, launches the backward-compatible version, and verifies the cloud save.

A compatible USB external drive or network transfer can reduce the need to download the installed game again. The player still leaves the old console online long enough for the save to synchronize and signs in with the same account on Series X|S. When to contact game support
Escalate after confirming all four basics: the same account is active, the title is supported, the old console was online with the latest progress saved, and the Series console is launching the intended edition. At that point, the remaining behavior may be specific to the game’s save architecture or a temporary Xbox network synchronization problem. Have the game title, edition, account identity, approximate last-save time, and the exact synchronization message available when requesting help.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I transfer Xbox One saves to Xbox Series X?
Connect the Xbox One to Xbox network, open the game and let the latest progress save, then sign in to the Series X with the same Microsoft/Xbox account and launch the compatible title. Accept the correct cloud copy and verify a known checkpoint.
How do I move an Xbox One save to Xbox Series S?
Use the same cloud-synchronization process as Series X. Series S is digital-only, so install the digital version or use an eligible digital license; it cannot read an Xbox One disc.

How do I move an Xbox 360 save to Series X or Series S?
The exact game must be backward compatible, and the save must have an Xbox cloud copy. Sign in on the Series console with the original account, launch the backward-compatible game, allow synchronization, and check the old profile.
Can I transfer saves with a USB hard drive?
A compatible USB drive can move installed games and apps and may let supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox games run directly from the drive. It is not a standalone save-transfer method; saved progress still relies on Xbox cloud synchronization.
Why is my save missing on my new Xbox?
Check that the old console uploaded its latest local save, both consoles use the identical account, the title is supported, and you launched the same game edition. For Xbox 360, also confirm that the save is in Xbox cloud storage rather than only on local storage.
Will network transfer move my saved progress?
Network transfer is designed to copy installed games and apps between nearby consoles. It can save download time, but it does not guarantee that a save was uploaded, converted between editions, or associated with the correct account.
Can every Xbox 360 game save transfer to Series X|S?
No. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Check the exact title on Xbox’s backward-compatibility list before attempting the migration.
Should I erase my old Xbox after starting the game on Series X|S?
No. First load the expected profile and a recognizable checkpoint on the Series console. Keep the old console intact until that verification succeeds.
The Bottom Line
For Xbox One saves, keep the old console online, let the latest save reach the cloud, and launch the compatible game on Series X|S with the same account. For Xbox 360 saves, add the backward-compatibility and cloud-storage checks. Use network transfer or an external USB drive for installations—not as a replacement for cloud save synchronization—and verify the checkpoint before erasing the old console.
