The safest way to move a Rockstar save is to let Rockstar Games Launcher synchronize it when the game and storefront support cloud saves. If cloud synchronization is unavailable or you want a recoverable offline copy, close the game and launcher, copy the title’s complete save folder to a USB drive or across your network, then place it in the matching folder on the new PC. Keep the original backup until the new installation loads the expected progress.
This guide covers Grand Theft Auto V and other Rockstar titles without assuming that every game, edition, or storefront uses the same path. Rockstar’s documented GTAV example is C:Users[Username]DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAVProfiles; verify the current support instructions for any other title before copying files.
Choose between cloud synchronization and a manual copy
Your best method depends on the title, where you bought it, and whether you need an independent backup. Rockstar says games purchased through Rockstar Games Launcher, together with cloud saves and progress, can synchronize for supported games after you sign in on another PC. That does not mean every Rockstar game or every launch path receives automatic synchronization.

For a one-time move on a supported Launcher purchase, cloud synchronization is usually simplest. Use a manual copy when the game is unsupported, was installed from a disc or another storefront, cloud data is stale, or you want a rollback copy that you control.

Prepare both PCs before touching the save
Preparation prevents the most common failure: copying a valid save into a folder the game never reads.
- Sign in with the same Rockstar account on both computers. A different account can have a different profile, cloud state, or online identity.
- Install the same game and, as far as possible, the same PC edition on the new computer. Treat a standard and an enhanced edition as separate titles until Rockstar confirms that their saves are compatible.
- Exit the game normally and quit Rockstar Games Launcher. Do not copy a folder while a save is being written or while the launcher is syncing it.
- Make a dated backup of the old save before changing anything. Keep it on the old PC and on separate storage when possible.
- Check whether Windows has redirected the Documents folder to another location. OneDrive or an organizational policy can move Documents, so search the actual location used by Windows instead of creating a second, empty
DocumentsRockstar Gamestree. - Have enough free space for the folder and the backup. Save folders are usually much smaller than a complete game installation, so a normal USB flash drive is generally sufficient; an external USB SSD is useful only when you are moving many other files as well.
Method A: Move the save with Rockstar cloud synchronization
Rockstar’s multi-PC guidance, last updated May 20, 2024, says that supported games bought through Rockstar Games Launcher can sync cloud saves and progress after you sign in on another PC. Cloud synchronization is tied to the supported title and launch path, not merely to the fact that a game is made by Rockstar.
Upload the latest progress from the old PC
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and verify the account name or email shown is the account that owns the game and contains the expected progress.
- Open the launcher’s settings for the game and turn on cloud saves if they are disabled.
- Start the game, confirm that the desired save or profile is present, and exit through the game’s normal quit command. A normal exit gives the game and launcher an opportunity to finish writing and uploading the latest state.
- Wait for the launcher to finish any visible synchronization before shutting down the old PC. If you are unsure whether an upload completed, leave the local folder untouched; it is your fallback for a manual transfer.
Download the save on the new PC
- Install Rockstar Games Launcher and the same supported game on the new computer.
- Sign in to the identical Rockstar account used on the old PC.
- Allow the launcher to complete its initial synchronization before launching the game repeatedly or creating a new save.
- Open the game and check the load menu, campaign progress, or other relevant profile information. Do not overwrite an existing local save until you have confirmed which copy is newest.
Handle a cloud-versus-local conflict carefully
If the launcher asks whether to use a cloud or local copy, compare the visible progress and timestamps. Keep a copy of both choices whenever the interface permits, then select the one that contains the newest confirmed progress. Never choose blindly: a newly installed PC may have a nearly empty local file, while an older cloud upload may not include your last session.

Method B: Copy the local save folder
A manual transfer is a file operation, not a game-installation transfer. You normally copy the save or profile folder, install the game separately on the new PC, and let the first launch create the destination structure.
1. Close the software on both computers
- Quit the game on the old PC.
- Exit Rockstar Games Launcher completely, including its notification-area process if it remains running.
- On the new PC, close the launcher and game too. If you have already launched the game there, exit it before replacing any files.
2. Locate the title-specific folder
For Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar’s documented example, browse to:
C:Users[Username]DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAVProfiles

The Profiles directory normally contains a folder identified by a profile ID and the files associated with that profile. Copy the entire relevant title folder or the complete Profiles folder rather than selecting one file by guesswork. Rockstar’s path is an example for GTAV, not a promise that Red Dead Redemption 2 or another title uses the same directory. For another game, consult that title’s current Rockstar support instructions first.

3. Copy the folder to removable storage
- Connect a USB flash drive or external SSD.
- Copy the complete title folder or
Profilesfolder to the drive. Preserve every subfolder, including the profile-ID folder. - Open the copy on the drive and verify that the expected subfolders and files are present. Comparing the folder size with the source is a quick check, but opening the copied folders is more useful than relying on a progress bar alone.
- Safely eject the drive in Windows before disconnecting it. Microsoft’s Windows 10/11 guidance recommends copying the source, verifying the files, safely ejecting the device, then connecting it to the destination PC.
4. Create the destination structure
- Install the same game and Rockstar Games Launcher on the new PC.
- Sign in to the same Rockstar account.
- Launch the game once, allow it to reach its main menu, and exit. This creates the Documents and title folders that the installation expects.
- Make a backup of this newly created destination folder before replacing it. Name it with the date so you can restore the clean state if the copied save causes an error.
5. Restore the old profile
- Open the newly created matching title folder on the new PC.
- Copy the old
Profilescontents into that location, preserving the folder hierarchy and profile-ID folder name. If Windows asks whether to merge folders, choose the option that retains the complete old profile only after confirming that your destination backup exists. - Do not edit, rename, or split individual save files unless the title’s own support instructions specifically require it.
- Start the game and open its load menu. Confirm the expected campaign slot, character, chapter, or progress before playing far enough to generate new data.
- Keep the old-PC backup and the pre-restore destination backup until the save has loaded correctly and you have made and reloaded a test save on the new computer.
Use a Windows network transfer instead of a drive
When both PCs are available, Windows can transfer files over the same Wi-Fi or LAN using its pairing-code workflow. Microsoft documents this as an alternative to external storage. Pair the computers, select the copied Rockstar title folder, wait for the transfer to finish, and verify the destination before restoring it. The game and launcher should remain closed during the copy just as they would with a USB drive.

Storefront, edition, and account limitations
Rockstar Games Launcher purchases
Supported Launcher purchases are the clearest case for cloud synchronization. Even then, enable cloud saves and confirm that the upload completed on the old PC. A cloud account is not a substitute for a local backup when the progress is valuable.
Steam, disc, and unsupported launch paths
Rockstar’s multi-PC guidance does not give Steam-launched, disc-installed, or otherwise unsupported titles the same automatic sync treatment. Plan on a title-specific manual backup and on repeating the required game and launcher setup on the new PC. A Steam installation may still open Rockstar Games Launcher, but that does not by itself establish that the title receives the Launcher-purchase cloud behavior described above.
Different PC editions
A standard and an enhanced PC edition can use different directories or save formats. Copy the source folder before experimenting, install the target edition, and verify compatibility in Rockstar’s current instructions. If compatibility is not stated, do not delete the original folder or assume that a successful file copy means the game can read it.

Redirected Documents folders
Windows may place Documents under a different drive or a synchronized folder. Follow the location shown by File Explorer’s Documents properties or by the folder created after the game’s first launch. Creating a second parallel Rockstar Games folder in the default path can leave the game looking at an empty directory while your real save remains elsewhere.
Fix common transfer failures
The cloud save is missing or older than expected
- Check that the same Rockstar account is signed in on both computers.
- Confirm that cloud saves are enabled for the game.
- Return to the old PC, launch the game, verify the desired progress, exit normally, and wait for synchronization to finish.
- If the old PC still has the correct local folder, stop troubleshooting the cloud copy and use the manual method while preserving that folder.
GTA Online profile data will not load
Rockstar’s current GTA Online recovery sequence, updated February 17, 2026, is specific and should be followed in order:
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher settings and select the game.
- Enable cloud saves.
- Open Account information.
- Select Delete local profile, then choose Confirm.
- Sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher again and relaunch the game.
Rockstar states that this removes profile details from the local device and requires another sign-in; it does not delete the Rockstar account or saved games. Keep a manual backup before using the command so you can recover if the result is not what you expected.

- Confirm that the copied folder is under the exact Documents location the new installation created.
- Check that the profile-ID folder was not flattened, renamed, or nested one level too deep. For example, the game should not be looking for
Profiles[ID]while the copy is atProfilesProfiles[ID]. - Verify that the game edition and title match the source.
- Start the launcher and game with the same Windows and Rockstar accounts used to create the source save.
- Restore the pre-copy destination backup and test again with the old folder copied into the matching location.
A save conflict appears after restoration
Keep both the original source backup and the new-PC backup. Compare progress and timestamps, test one copy at a time, and avoid saving over the only known-good folder. If the game offers cloud and local choices, select the copy whose progress you can identify rather than the option that merely appears first.
You replaced a newer destination save
Stop launching the game so it cannot overwrite more files. Restore the destination backup you made before the manual copy, then decide whether that newer save or the old-PC save is the one you actually need. This is why a dated backup should precede every replacement.
Verify the move before retiring the old PC
- Launch the game and load the expected save instead of immediately starting a new game.
- Check several recognizable details: the latest mission or chapter, character location, inventory, settings, and any visible completion percentage.
- Make a small test save in a new slot if the title supports slots, exit normally, restart, and load that test save.
- Confirm that Rockstar Games Launcher has not replaced the working local copy with a different cloud version.
- Only after the test succeeds should you consider deleting the old installation. Retain at least one dated backup of the original profile folder for future recovery.
What the official guidance establishes
Rockstar’s multi-PC article was last updated May 20, 2024. Its GTAV save-folder example is documented in Rockstar support guidance last updated February 28, 2025. The GTA Online local-profile recovery procedure above was updated February 17, 2026. Microsoft’s current Windows 10/11 transfer guidance covers external storage, verification, safe ejection, and PC-to-PC transfer over Wi-Fi or LAN. Because folder names and cloud behavior can change by title, edition, and storefront, use those instructions as the basis for a transfer while checking the current support page for the exact game you are moving.
