The safest way to move a PS4 library and user data to a PS5 is Sony’s built-in Data Transfer process. Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both consoles, update their system software, sync trophies, connect them to the same network, and run Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue on the PS5. Keep both consoles powered on until the transfer finishes.
You have separate alternatives for digital downloads, discs, USB extended storage, PlayStation Plus cloud saves, and exporting PS4 saves to a USB drive. The important limitation is that a PS4 save does not automatically become compatible with a game’s native PS5 version; that conversion is decided separately by each game’s developer.
What you need before starting
Prepare both consoles before opening the transfer menu. These checks prevent the most common interruptions and make sure the destination PS5 receives the correct account and save data.

- The same PlayStation account: Sign in on the PS4 with the account you intend to use on the PS5. User and account information is transferred during PS5 initial setup; if setup is already complete, PS4 saved-data transfer is limited to the user signed in on the destination PS5.
- Current system software: Install the latest available system software updates on both consoles before beginning.
- Synchronized trophies: Manually synchronize trophies on the PS4. Trophy information is associated with your account, but Sony specifically lists synchronization as a preparation step.
- One local network: Connect both consoles to the same modem or router, either by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A wired LAN connection can be faster than Wi-Fi. A LAN cable is sold separately.
- Enough destination storage: Check free space on the PS5 if you intend to move several games. The transfer cannot complete if the selected content exceeds available capacity.
- Continuous power: Do not plan to move the consoles, switch network settings, or shut either one down while the process is running.
A direct transfer requires the PS4 to remain available. If you no longer have the PS4, you can still recover digital games through your Game Library and use cloud or USB methods for saves, provided those saves were previously uploaded or copied.

Use PS5 Data Transfer for a complete migration
Direct transfer is the broadest option because it can move user and account information during initial setup, saved data for games playable on PS5, and games playable on PS5. It does not move data that is already present on the PS5, and after initial setup the saved-data portion applies only to the user signed in on that PS5.
During first-time PS5 setup
- Turn on the PS5 and begin its initial setup.
- When the setup wizard displays the data-transfer screen, leave the PS4 powered on and signed in to the same PlayStation account.
- Confirm that both consoles are connected to the same modem or router. If possible, connect them with Ethernet for a faster transfer.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select the PS4 and the content to move.
- Start the transfer and wait. The PS5 restarts during the process; some game data can continue transferring after the restart.
After PS5 setup is complete
- On the PS5, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Data Transfer and select Continue.
- Keep the PS4 on, signed in, and connected to the same network. Follow the prompts to choose the content and begin.
Do not power off either console, alter network settings, or run an internet connection test during the transfer. Sony warns that these actions can damage or lose data. The PS5 may restart, so a temporary black screen or return to the home screen is not by itself a failure.
What the direct transfer can and cannot move

Transfer eligibility follows PS5 compatibility, not merely whether a title was purchased on PS4. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, but some PS4-only games and functions are exceptions. Check the individual game’s compatibility and publisher instructions before assuming a particular title will transfer.

Games and saves do not have to travel by the same method. You can reinstall a game from your account, install a disc, or use an existing USB extended-storage drive while handling saves separately.

Digital PS4 games
- Sign in to the PS5 with the PlayStation account that purchased the game.
- Open the PS5 Game Library.
- Find the game in your collection and select Download.
- Wait for the game to install and apply any available update.
This route does not require the PS4 to be powered on. It does require access to the purchasing account and an internet connection, and the game must be compatible with PS5. Re-downloading the game does not, by itself, restore a save; use Data Transfer, cloud storage, or a PS4-save USB export for that.
PS4 disc games
- Insert the PS4 game disc into the PS5.
- Allow the console to install the game and download updates.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you want to start the installed game, because the disc serves as the license.
A disc-based PS4 game requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the disc, so you must use a digital license or another supported version instead.
PS4 games on USB extended storage
If the PS4 used a USB extended-storage drive, disconnect it safely from the PS4 and connect it to the PS5. Compatible PS4 games stored there can be accessed without copying the entire installation to the PS5’s internal storage. Sony lists a supported USB extended-storage capacity of at least 250 GB and at most 8 TB.

- Connect the drive directly to the PS5 rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Do not format the drive on the PS5 if you need the existing PS4 games; formatting erases its contents.
- PS4 games can be played directly from supported USB extended storage, while a native PS5 game generally needs to be installed on the PS5’s internal storage or an appropriate expansion device.
Transfer PS4 saves with cloud storage
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is useful when the PS4 and PS5 are in different locations or when you want a second copy of important saves. Sony lists up to 100 GB of PS4 saved-data cloud storage for PlayStation Plus.

Upload from the PS4
- On the PS4, sign in to the PlayStation Plus account that owns the saves.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage.
- Select Upload to Online Storage.
- Choose the game and the save files, then confirm the upload.
Download to the PS5
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account on the PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS4), then Cloud Storage.
- Select Download to Console Storage, choose the game and save, and confirm.
Cloud storage transfers the PS4 save file. It does not guarantee that the file will load in a separate native PS5 build of the game. If the game offers both PS4 and PS5 versions, first determine whether its publisher supports importing a PS4 save into the PS5 version.
Transfer PS4 saves with a USB drive
A USB save export is a practical fallback when you do not have PlayStation Plus cloud storage. This method is specifically useful for PS4 saved data. Sony does not allow PS5 saved data to be copied from the PS5 to USB, so do not treat this as a general PS5 backup procedure.
Copy saves from PS4
- Connect a USB drive to the PS4.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage.
- Select Copy to USB Storage Device.
- Choose the game and save files, then confirm the copy.
- Use the PS4’s safe-removal option before disconnecting the drive.
Copy saves to PS5
- Connect the USB drive to the PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS4), then USB Drive.
- Choose Copy to Console Storage, select the save, and confirm.
The account that created the save must normally be the account signed in on the PS5. If the save belongs to another user, switch to that user before attempting the copy; the transfer process does not merge unrelated account ownership.

Will a PS4 save work with the PS5 version?
There are two different situations:
- Running the PS4 version on PS5: The PS4 save is generally the save for that PS4 build, subject to the game’s own compatibility and account requirements.
- Running a native PS5 version: The PS5 build may use a different save format or an in-game import system. Support is not automatic.
Sony states that “the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.” Before deleting the PS4 installation or its save, check the game publisher’s instructions for the exact title. Some games require launching the PS4 version and selecting an upload option; others use a publisher account, a one-time import, or no cross-generation conversion at all.

Keep the original PS4 save until you have launched the intended PS5 version, imported the progress, and verified that your latest checkpoint, character data, settings, and downloadable-content entitlements are present. A successful file copy only proves that the file reached the PS5; it does not prove that the native PS5 build can interpret it.
Disc upgrades and the PS5 model you need
Eligible PS4 disc purchases can sometimes be upgraded to a PS5 version, but the console must be able to authenticate the original disc. Sony’s PlayStation Blog FAQ states: “If players originally purchased a PS4 game disc, the PS5 console with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive is required to upgrade to the PS5 version of the game and transfer their saves over.”
That requirement matters even after an upgrade is installed: the disc may still need to be inserted to play, depending on the title’s licensing rules. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot perform a disc-based upgrade. Digital PS4 purchases follow the publisher’s upgrade terms and do not require the physical disc, but they still may have regional, edition, or promotional restrictions.

The most complete migration is direct Data Transfer. The fastest route for a large digital library may be downloading only the games you currently play, while a USB extended-storage drive avoids reinstalling PS4 game data. For saves, cloud storage is convenient when available; USB export is the no-subscription alternative.

Troubleshooting transfer problems
The PS5 cannot find the PS4
- Confirm both consoles are powered on and connected to the same modem or router, not separate guest networks.
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both systems.
- Install pending system software updates and restart both consoles.
- If Wi-Fi discovery is unreliable, connect both consoles to the router with Ethernet.
- Start the transfer from Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue after initial setup.
The transfer is taking too long
Large game installations can take substantial time over Wi-Fi. A wired LAN connection can improve the transfer rate, but it does not remove the time needed to copy the data or install updates. Do not cancel by powering off a console or changing network settings. If the transfer appears stalled, allow the process to complete its current stage before restarting both consoles and trying again.
A game transferred but the save is missing
- Verify that the save belongs to the PlayStation account currently signed in on the PS5.
- Check whether the save is in PS4 console storage, PlayStation Plus cloud storage, or on the USB drive; each location uses a different restore path.
- For cloud saves, download the file under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Cloud Storage.
- For USB saves, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > USB Drive.
- Launch the PS4 version first if the title’s publisher requires an in-game upload or import step for the native PS5 version.
The native PS5 version rejects the save
This usually indicates a title-specific conversion limitation rather than a failed copy. Confirm that the save came from the same account and region-compatible edition, then check the publisher’s documented PS4-to-PS5 import process. Do not delete the PS4 version or original save until the publisher’s steps have been completed and the PS5 version loads the expected progress.
The USB drive asks to be formatted
Stop if the drive contains PS4 games or saves you still need. Formatting erases the existing contents. A USB extended-storage drive for games and a USB drive containing exported saves are different use cases; use the correct drive and menu option. If the PS5 does not recognize an extended-storage drive, verify that its capacity is within Sony’s 250 GB to 8 TB range and connect it directly to the console.

- Sync trophies on the PS4.
- Update both consoles.
- Confirm the same PlayStation account and user identity.
- Back up important PS4 saves to cloud storage or a USB drive before starting.
- Decide whether each game will be transferred, downloaded, installed from disc, or played from USB extended storage.
- Check the game publisher’s instructions for native PS5 save conversion.
- Run the PS5 Data Transfer process while both consoles remain powered on and on the same network.
- Launch several transferred games and verify their saves before wiping, selling, or disconnecting the PS4.
