Use the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME as the transfer hub. Open HOME, choose Pokémon, select Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield and the correct save-data user, move Pokémon between the game and HOME boxes, then press + and choose Save changes and exit. The mobile HOME app cannot move Pokémon with Sword or Shield.
To move a Pokémon from Sword to Shield, deposit it from Sword into HOME, save, reconnect HOME to Shield, and withdraw it into a compatible Shield box. The same process works in the opposite direction.
What you need before transferring
- A Nintendo Switch with the Sword or Shield save data you want to access.
- The Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME installed and signed in with a Nintendo Account.
- Pokémon HOME’s Basic Plan or Premium Plan. Nintendo says the free Basic Plan can move and trade Pokémon between compatible games; Premium is not required for these basic transfers.
- No Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo states that Switch Online is not required to use Pokémon HOME.
The console must contain the save data for the game you select. HOME can also access compatible save data belonging to other users on the same Switch, so obtain the other player’s permission and verify the user name before moving anything.

- Start Pokémon HOME from the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu.
- Press A on the title screen.
- Choose Pokémon from HOME’s main menu.
- Select Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield.
- When HOME lists users, select the save-data user whose game boxes you intend to edit.
- Arrange Pokémon between the selected game’s boxes and your Pokémon HOME boxes. A Pokémon that cannot be moved is marked with an icon.
- Press + when you finish arranging the boxes.
- Choose Save changes and exit.
Saving is the step that commits the box changes. If you leave without saving, the arrangement you made in the transfer screen is not applied.

Deposit a Pokémon from Sword or Shield into HOME
In the transfer screen, move a Pokémon from a Sword or Shield box into an available HOME box. Save changes and exit. The Pokémon is then stored in HOME and is no longer in that game’s box until you withdraw it again.
Withdraw a Pokémon from HOME into Sword or Shield
Open HOME again, select the destination game and the correct user save, and move a compatible Pokémon from a HOME box into a game box. Save changes and exit to complete the withdrawal.
Move a Pokémon from Sword to Shield
HOME does not perform a direct wireless Sword-to-Shield exchange. It provides shared storage between the two games, so use two saved transfer operations:

- Connect HOME to Pokémon Sword and select the appropriate Sword save-data user.
- Move the Pokémon from a Sword box into a HOME box.
- Press + and select Save changes and exit.
- Reopen the transfer screen and select Pokémon Shield.
- Select the Shield save-data user who should receive the Pokémon.
- Move the Pokémon from the HOME box into a compatible Shield box.
- Press +, then choose Save changes and exit.
Shield-to-Sword transfers use the same sequence with the source and destination reversed. Because HOME connects to one selected game at a time, do not expect both games’ boxes to appear in a single transfer screen.

Install or open HOME on the Switch for every Sword/Shield movement. Opening the mobile app does not replace the console steps.

Basic Plan versus Premium Plan

The available evidence establishes that Premium is optional for basic movement; it does not establish a transfer-specific Premium price, so no subscription cost is necessary to follow these instructions.
Which Pokémon can travel to each game?
A Pokémon can move only into games that support that species. Pokémon HOME supports connections among Sword, Shield, Scarlet, Violet, Legends: Arceus, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but compatibility is species-specific rather than universal. A Pokémon being stored in HOME does not guarantee that every connected game can receive it.
Check compatibility before moving
- Open the Pokémon’s details in Pokémon HOME.
- Find Games it can travel to.
- Read the destination list before arranging boxes.
Games that cannot receive that Pokémon are shown as grayed out. Use this check when a transfer slot is unavailable or when a Pokémon moved out of one game does not appear as a legal choice in another.
What the compatibility rule means for Sword and Shield
If the species is supported by the destination version, HOME can normally withdraw it into that game’s box. If the destination does not support the species, HOME blocks the move rather than creating an invalid Pokémon in the game. The on-screen icon and the Games it can travel to list are the relevant checks for an individual Pokémon.
Party Pokémon must be moved into a PC box first
The documented transfer workflow works with Pokémon in Sword or Shield PC boxes, not Pokémon currently in the active party. Before opening HOME, start the game and move any Pokémon you want to transfer from the party into a PC box. Return to HOME and select the game again after making that change.

Choosing the correct save-data user
On a Switch with multiple profiles, HOME presents the compatible save data for users on that console. Selecting the wrong profile can make the boxes look empty or expose another player’s Pokémon. Confirm all of the following before moving a Pokémon:

- The displayed user is the owner of the save data you intend to edit.
- The Pokémon is in a PC box, not in that user’s party.
- You have permission if the save belongs to someone else.
Save changes only after checking the profile. HOME’s ability to access other users’ compatible saves is useful for a shared console, but it makes the user-selection step important.
Why a Pokémon is grayed out or marked unavailable
The species is not supported by the destination
Open the Pokémon’s details and review Games it can travel to. A grayed-out destination means that game cannot receive that species under HOME’s compatibility rules. Select a game shown as available or leave the Pokémon in HOME.
The Pokémon is still in the party
HOME cannot move party Pokémon in this workflow. Put it into a Sword or Shield PC box, then reconnect to the game from HOME.
You selected the wrong game or profile
Exit the transfer screen, choose the intended Sword or Shield version, and select the correct user’s save data. On a multi-user console, an empty box layout often indicates a profile-selection mistake rather than lost Pokémon.

You are using the mobile app
Close the mobile app and start Pokémon HOME on the Nintendo Switch. Only the Switch version exposes the Sword/Shield box connection described here.
The previous arrangement was not saved
After moving Pokémon, press + and choose Save changes and exit. If you cancel or leave before saving, reopen HOME and repeat the arrangement.
One-way rules that are easy to confuse with Sword/Shield transfers
The normal HOME connection for compatible Sword and Shield species supports depositing into HOME and withdrawing back into a compatible game. Other sources have different restrictions:
- Pokémon moved from Pokémon Bank into HOME cannot return to Bank.
- Pokémon moved from Let’s Go into a newer game cannot return to Let’s Go.
Those source-specific one-way rules do not change the ordinary two-way HOME movement between compatible Sword/Shield species and the games. Always check the individual Pokémon’s permitted destinations before assuming a return path.
A safe transfer checklist
- Use the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account connected to your HOME use.
- Confirm the Sword or Shield save-data user.
- Move the Pokémon from the active party into a PC box first.
- Check Games it can travel to for the intended destination.
- Deposit from the source game and save before selecting the destination game.
- Withdraw into a compatible destination box.
- Press + and choose Save changes and exit after each connection.
Answers to common transfer questions
Can I transfer directly from Sword to Shield?
Use HOME as the shared storage hub. Deposit the Pokémon from Sword into HOME, save, select Shield, and withdraw it into a compatible Shield box; there is no direct wireless Sword-to-Shield box-transfer screen.

Can I move Pokémon from Shield into Pokémon HOME?
Yes. On the Switch, select Pokémon, choose Shield and the correct save-data user, move the Pokémon into a HOME box, then save changes and exit.
Do I need Pokémon HOME Premium?
No. Nintendo says the free Basic Plan can move and trade Pokémon between compatible games, so Premium is not required for the Sword/Shield procedure.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online?
No. Nintendo’s Pokémon HOME FAQ says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use HOME.

No. Sword and Shield transfers require the Nintendo Switch version of HOME.
Why can I see a Pokémon in HOME but not move it to Shield?
Shield may not support that species, or the Pokémon may be subject to another source-specific restriction. Open its details and check Games it can travel to; unavailable destinations are grayed out.
