You can move your original Nintendo Switch Octopath Traveler save to a Nintendo Switch 2 and continue playing it in the original Switch software. You can’t load that save in the separate Nintendo Switch 2 edition: Nintendo’s eShop listing says save data is incompatible between the two versions. Choose a console transfer or, if your save is backed up, Nintendo Switch Online’s Save Data Cloud.
First, know which version you want to play
Moving a save onto the Switch 2 console does not convert it into a Switch 2 edition save. Nintendo’s Australia eShop listing for the original Octopath Traveler states: “Save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch™ and Nintendo Switch™ 2 versions.” To continue your existing progress, launch the original Nintendo Switch software on Switch 2, rather than the separate Switch 2 edition. Choose a transfer method

For setup-time migration, follow Nintendo’s Switch 2 System Transfer guide. Nintendo’s individual Save Data Transfer instructions cover the post-setup option. Cloud-save availability for the original game is listed by Nintendo Australia; Nintendo’s general Save Data Cloud instructions explain backing up and downloading saves for Switch games compatible with Switch 2.
Transfer during Switch 2’s initial setup
- Keep your original Switch available and begin setting up the Switch 2.
- When prompted, choose Nintendo’s System Transfer option and follow the instructions shown on both consoles.
- After the transfer, start the original Switch version of Octopath Traveler on Switch 2 and check that your save appears.
Nintendo also offers a server-based System Transfer route for people who do not yet have the Switch 2. That option has limitations and may initialize the sending console, so read the current prompts carefully and make sure you understand what will happen to the original system before proceeding.

Transfer one save after Switch 2 setup
- On both consoles, install the current system software and connect to the internet.
- Make sure the user on each console is linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- On the original Switch, open the individual Save Data Transfer function and follow its prompts to send the Octopath Traveler save to the nearby Switch 2.
- Launch the original Switch software on Switch 2 and verify that the save is available.
This is a move, not a copy: Nintendo says the source save is deleted after an individual transfer. If you need to preserve the original console’s save, consider whether cloud backup is available for your game and account before moving it.
Use Save Data Cloud instead
Nintendo Australia’s eShop listing for the original game identifies Save Data Cloud support. Using Nintendo’s cloud-save service requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check the game’s Save Data Cloud menu on your console, or the relevant eShop listing for your region, before relying on this method. Nintendo’s instructions explain how to back up a save on one system and download it on another; the feature applies to Switch games compatible with Switch 2.

Check the save in the right game
After any transfer or cloud download, open the original Nintendo Switch release of Octopath Traveler on Switch 2. The separate Switch 2 edition cannot use the original Switch game’s save, even if that save is now stored on the Switch 2 console. The incompatibility is between the game versions, not a failure of the console transfer.
