Back up or move the save before the shutdown date, while the original console still works. First check whether the game supports Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud. For a supported game, compare the cloud and console timestamps under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, then back up the newer copy. For a game without cloud support, use Transfer Your Save Data while both consoles are available. If the old console is being sold or cannot remain with you, use Nintendo’s server system-transfer process before giving it up.
A service shutdown does not create one universal rule for local saves. Nintendo documents ways to copy or transfer save data, but does not promise that every discontinued game will keep cloud access or provide an export. Treat the announced shutdown date as your deadline.
Choose the right transfer method first
Your best method depends on three facts: whether the game supports Save Data Cloud, whether the source console is still available, and whether you want to keep the original save or move it.

Do not assume that a microSD card, USB drive, game cartridge, or another accessory is a supported save backup. The Nintendo procedures above are the documented ways to protect this data.

Check cloud compatibility and membership
Confirm that the game supports Save Data Cloud
Nintendo says the vast majority of Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games support Save Data Cloud backup, but “vast majority” is not “every game.” Check the specific title’s listing in Nintendo eShop and its Nintendo product-information page. A game’s shutdown notice may also state whether online features or cloud handling are changing, so read that notice rather than relying on assumptions from another title.
Understand the Nintendo Switch Online requirement
Save Data Cloud is tied to Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo Support states: “If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, you will not have access to your Save Data Cloud backups.” Nintendo also says previous backups can be accessed again if you resubscribe within 180 days after the membership expires. That 180-day window is an access condition, not a reason to postpone the transfer: make and verify the backup before the game’s shutdown.
Check the account and user profile
Cloud saves are associated with the user who created them. On a console with several profiles, select the profile that actually played the game. A different user may show no backup even though another profile has one. This is also why Nintendo warns that saves for unlinked users can be deleted during a local Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer.

Use this procedure while the original console and the game’s save are still accessible. The timestamps are important: they tell you which copy contains your latest progress before you overwrite anything.

- Open the HOME Menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Open Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user profile that owns the game save.
- Select the game.
- Inspect the latest cloud and console timestamps shown for that title.
- If the console copy is newer, choose Back Up Save Data and wait for the upload to finish.
- If the cloud copy is newer, choose Download Save Data to restore that version to the console.
Make the choice based on the timestamp and your actual progress. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered, so downloading an older cloud copy over a newer console copy can permanently remove the newer progress. If the timestamps look unexpected, stop and investigate before selecting either command.
Verify the backup
After the operation completes, return to the game’s Save Data Cloud entry and confirm that the cloud timestamp reflects the intended copy. If practical, launch the game and check a recognizable milestone, character, inventory, or other in-game marker. Do this verification before uninstalling the game, initializing the console, or handing the hardware to someone else.
Transfer one save between two Nintendo Switch consoles
Individual save transfer is the option for a game that does not support Save Data Cloud, and it also works when you want to move a particular game rather than the entire console setup. Nintendo describes it as moving an individual game save file to a different system.
Requirements and consequences
- The original console must still be available and able to start the transfer.
- The destination console must be available to receive it.
- Use the user profile associated with the save.
- The save transferred this way is removed from the original console after the transfer.
Because the source copy is removed, do not use individual transfer as a test or as a way to create a second independent backup. If you need the original console to retain its progress, investigate whether the title supports Save Data Cloud and use a cloud backup instead.

Transfer steps
- On the original console, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to identify the sending console, the receiving console, the user profile, and the game.
- Keep both systems available until the transfer reports completion.
- On the destination console, launch the game with the receiving user and confirm that the expected progress is present.
If the game is cloud-incompatible, complete this process before the shutdown or before the source console is erased. Once the source console is gone, this individual-transfer route is no longer available.
Moving to Nintendo Switch 2 with local communication
A Switch-to-Switch 2 local communication transfer is a broader migration than an individual save transfer. Choose it deliberately because Nintendo’s behavior differs by save type and user status.
What can be copied and what can be deleted
Nintendo warns that supported cloud-backup saves can be copied during the local transfer. However, saves for users who are not linked and saves belonging to games without cloud support are deleted from the source console. A cloud-compatible save may therefore be retained, while a non-cloud save may not be.

Preparation checklist
- On the source console, identify every user profile that has progress you need.
- Link users as required before starting; unlinked-user saves are specifically at risk during this transfer.
- For cloud-compatible games, complete and verify a Save Data Cloud backup first.
- For cloud-incompatible games, do not rely on the broad local transfer to preserve the source copy; use the documented individual save-transfer route while the original console is available.
- Check the shutdown notice and the game’s product information for title-specific restrictions.
Run and verify the transfer
- Start the Switch-to-Switch 2 system-transfer process from the system settings on the consoles.
- Follow the displayed pairing and user-selection instructions.
- Leave both consoles in the transfer flow until the system confirms completion.
- On Switch 2, open the game with the corresponding user profile and check its progress.
- Only after verification should you initialize, sell, or otherwise dispose of the source console.
The key distinction is retention: local Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer may copy supported cloud-backup saves, whereas individual save transfer intentionally removes the moved save from the original system.

Use server system transfer when the old console is going away
If you are selling the old console, sending it for service, or cannot keep both systems available at the same time, Nintendo provides a server-transfer route. It is designed for uploading the data first and downloading it to the replacement system later.
How the server route works
- Start Nintendo’s server system-transfer setup on the source console while you still control it.
- Follow the instructions to upload the eligible data to Nintendo’s server.
- Complete the source-console handoff only after the upload succeeds and you have recorded the download deadline shown during setup.
- Understand that Nintendo initializes the source console after the upload.
- On the replacement console, use the transfer process before the displayed deadline to download the stored data.
Nintendo’s current system-transfer guidance says server-transfer data is stored for up to one year, until retrieval, cancellation, or the download deadline shown during setup. “Up to one year” is not a guarantee that every transfer remains available for a full year; the on-screen deadline controls your case. Save that date with the console records.
When not to use it
Do not start a server transfer merely to make an extra copy while continuing to use the source console. The source is initialized after upload, so this route is for a planned move, trade-in, or situation in which the original system will no longer remain in your possession.

What a game shutdown changes—and what it does not
A shutdown can disable online play, log-in services, events, leaderboards, or other server functions. It does not automatically erase every local save, and it does not automatically create an exportable file. Nintendo’s support procedures explain how to back up or move saves, but they do not promise that a particular game will retain cloud access after its service ends.

For that reason, complete the backup or transfer before the announced shutdown date. Follow any title-specific notice for a deadline, required account, or special migration. If the notice says nothing about saves, use the Nintendo system-level procedures rather than assuming the game’s server will preserve your progress.
Timing plan for a safe transfer
Several weeks before shutdown
- Check the game’s Nintendo eShop listing and product information for Save Data Cloud compatibility.
- Identify the Nintendo Account user that owns the save.
- Confirm that the original console can start the game and open its save.
- If cloud-compatible, inspect the cloud and console timestamps and create a current backup.
- If cloud-incompatible, locate the destination console and plan an individual save transfer.
After the backup or transfer
- Open the game on the destination or restored console.
- Check a distinctive piece of progress rather than assuming a completed system message means the correct save was selected.
- Keep the source console untouched until verification is complete.
- Record the server-transfer download deadline if you used that route.
Before disposing of the old console
- Verify the save on the replacement system.
- For a cloud route, confirm the latest cloud timestamp.
- For an individual transfer, remember that the source save was removed by design.
- For a server route, confirm that the upload succeeded and note the retrieval deadline before the source initializes.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game does not appear in Save Data Cloud
Check that you selected the correct user profile, then verify the title’s compatibility in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo product information. If the game is not supported, stop looking for a cloud command and use individual save transfer while the source console works.
The cloud copy is older than the console copy
Choose Back Up Save Data, not Download Save Data. Compare the timestamps again after the upload and verify progress in the game. Downloading the older copy would overwrite the newer local progress, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered.
The console copy is older than the cloud copy
Choose Download Save Data only if the cloud timestamp represents the progress you want. Launch the game afterward and check a known milestone before making further changes.
The source console is no longer available
Individual transfer requires the source system, so it cannot be started after that console has been erased or surrendered. A previously created Save Data Cloud backup can be accessed while the Nintendo Switch Online conditions still apply; otherwise, check whether you completed a server transfer and whether its displayed retrieval deadline has passed.
A Switch-to-Switch 2 move lost a save
Review whether the affected user was linked and whether the game supported cloud backup. Nintendo specifically warns that unlinked-user saves and non-cloud saves are deleted from the source during local transfer. If neither a verified cloud backup nor another completed transfer exists, Nintendo’s documented procedures do not provide a general recovery promise for that deleted source copy.
Bottom line
Protect the save before the shutdown, not after it. Use Save Data Cloud for a compatible title, individual transfer for a non-cloud title while both consoles are present, local Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer only after checking its deletion rules, and server system transfer when the old console must be handed over. Verify the game’s progress on the destination system before you erase or sell the source.
