The safest way to move data to an iPhone 17 is Apple’s Move to iOS process during the iPhone’s first-time setup. On the iPhone, choose Transfer Your Apps & Data > From Android; on Android, open Move to iOS, enter the temporary code shown on the iPhone, select what to copy, and leave both phones powered and close together until the transfer finishes. A direct USB-C data cable is the faster option when both phones support USB-C.
If the iPhone 17 has already finished setup, Move to iOS cannot be started normally without erasing the iPhone. You can either erase it and repeat setup, or leave it intact and move supported content manually. Do not wipe the Android phone until you have checked the iPhone’s contacts, photos, messages, WhatsApp data, calendars, and call history.

“Transfer everything” has a practical limitation: Apple can move many personal-data categories, but music, books, PDFs, and apps without a matching App Store version need separate handling. Some free apps are offered for download only when a corresponding App Store version and transfer support exist.

Prepare both phones before you start
A few checks prevent the most common failures and make it clear whether the iPhone has enough room.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the Android phone. Wireless Move to iOS uses a temporary device-to-device connection. Keep Wi-Fi enabled even if you plan to use a cable.
- Connect both phones to power. The process can take a while, depending on how much data is selected. A low battery or a disconnected cable can interrupt it.
- Check iPhone storage. Compare the iPhone’s available capacity with the Android data you intend to move, including content on a Micro SD card. Only count card content that you actually want copied, but include it in the capacity check.
- Update Chrome on Android if bookmarks matter. Current Chrome data gives the transfer the best chance of bringing over your web bookmarks.
- Have a USB-C data cable ready. Both Apple and Google describe a direct USB-C connection as the faster approach when the two devices have USB-C ports. A cable that only charges may not carry data.
- Keep account credentials available. Have your carrier account login, verification method, Apple Account details, and credentials for messaging or media services ready. The transfer does not replace every later sign-in.
- Do not reset the Android phone yet. It is your fallback copy if a category is missing or a carrier activation needs to be repeated.
Transfer with Move to iOS during iPhone 17 setup
The following sequence is Apple’s supported automated workflow. The labels can vary slightly with software updates, but the decision point is the same.
1. Start iPhone setup
Turn on the iPhone 17 and place it near the Android phone. Follow the iPhone setup screens until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data. Tap From Android. Do not complete setup first if you want the automated migration.
2. Install and open Move to iOS on Android
Open Move to iOS on the Android phone. If it is not installed, use the QR-code button displayed on the iPhone to open its Google Play listing, then install it. Open the app and tap Continue.
3. Accept the prompts and grant permissions
Read and accept the terms shown in Move to iOS. Allow the permissions it requests so it can read the categories you selected, such as contacts, messages, photos, calendars, files, and call history. If Android displays a security or connection prompt, follow it rather than dismissing the app.
4. Enter the temporary code
The iPhone displays a one-time numeric code. Enter that code in Move to iOS on Android. The phones then establish the transfer connection. Keep them close together; do not open another app, answer a call, or change network settings while the connection is being established.

5. Select the content categories
Choose the categories you want to copy. The list can include contacts, message history and SMS, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, accessibility and display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history, calendars, and eligible free apps. Select only what you have room for on the iPhone.

6. Let the transfer run to completion
Tap the start command in Move to iOS and leave both devices near each other and connected to power. Apple says the duration depends on the amount of content; it does not publish a guaranteed duration or a universal speed. The iPhone shows progress, but a large photo or video library can make the apparent progress uneven. Wait for the iPhone progress bar to finish before continuing setup.
7. Finish setup and install matched apps
When the transfer completes, finish the remaining iPhone setup screens. The iPhone may identify free apps that have a matching App Store version; download those from the App Store. Open important apps and sign in. Paid apps, subscriptions, and app-specific secure data may require the original provider’s recovery process rather than an automatic copy.
Use a USB-C cable for a faster direct transfer
When both phones have USB-C, connect them with a USB-C data cable before or as directed by the Move to iOS flow. Apple states that a direct USB-C connection can make the transfer faster, and its iPhone 17 guidance says to use a USB-C cable to boost transfer speed. The cable does not remove the need to start at Transfer Your Apps & Data > From Android; it changes how the two phones communicate.
What to do when Android asks about USB mode
Some Android phones display a USB notification after the cable is connected. If the transfer cannot see the phone, open that notification and choose the data-transfer or file-transfer option rather than charge-only mode. Then return to Move to iOS and follow its prompts. The exact wording differs by Android manufacturer.

When wired transfer is the better choice
- Both phones have USB-C ports and you have a known data-capable cable.
- You are moving a large camera library or many videos and want Apple’s faster direct-connection option.
- Your Wi-Fi environment is crowded, unreliable, or frequently disconnects.
Wireless transfer remains valid when a cable is unavailable. Apple does not provide a guaranteed wireless completion time, so plan to keep both phones powered until the progress bar is complete.

What Move to iOS transfers
Apple lists the following categories as supported by the setup-time migration. Availability can depend on the Android data format, permissions, storage, and the particular app or device.

Content that needs a separate plan
Music
Music is not listed as an automatic Move to iOS category. If your music is stored as local files, preserve the originals and use a method supported by the service or computer where they are stored. If it comes from a streaming service, install that service’s iPhone app and sign in instead of expecting local Android downloads to appear.
Books and PDFs
Books and PDFs must be moved manually. Copy files from the Android storage or cloud location to a computer or cloud drive, then import or download them into an iPhone app that supports the format. Open several files after importing; a file can be present but still fail to open if the receiving app does not support its format.

An Android package cannot simply be installed on iOS. Find an iPhone version from the same service, export data using that service’s account or cloud sync, or keep the Android phone available for that function. App-specific data is controlled by the app developer, so Move to iOS cannot guarantee a copy when no supported iPhone version exists.
Move your phone number and eSIM
Apple says the phone number and physical SIM or eSIM may be activated during the move. In some cases, the iPhone sends you to your carrier’s website to finish activation. Keep carrier account credentials and any required verification available, and do not cancel the Android line until the iPhone can make a call and use cellular data.
Before starting activation
- Make sure you can receive account-security codes through the carrier’s approved method.
- Have the account holder’s login and any transfer PIN or identity verification the carrier requires.
- Keep the Android phone connected to cellular service until the iPhone’s number is confirmed.
Verify the result
After setup, turn off Wi-Fi briefly and place a test call from the iPhone 17. Send and receive a text, test cellular data, and check that the displayed phone number is correct. Carrier procedures vary, so a successful data transfer does not by itself prove that eSIM activation is complete.

If the iPhone 17 is already set up
Option 1: Erase and repeat the automated transfer
Apple’s Move to iOS workflow belongs to initial setup. To use it after setup, back up anything currently on the iPhone that you need, then erase the iPhone and start setup again. Erasing removes the iPhone’s current content and settings, so verify the backup before proceeding. Once the phone returns to the setup screens, choose Transfer Your Apps & Data > From Android and follow the normal steps.
Option 2: Keep the iPhone and move data manually
If erasing is unacceptable, keep the iPhone intact and handle each category separately. Add mail, calendar, and contact accounts in iPhone settings; copy photos and videos through a computer or cloud-storage service; move documents through the Files app or a compatible drive; install iPhone versions of your apps; and use each service’s own export or sync function for app-specific data. WhatsApp history is most predictable through the supported Move to iOS workflow, so check WhatsApp’s current in-app migration requirements before choosing the manual route.
Manual migration is slower and less comprehensive because there is no single progress screen covering all categories. Make a checklist of the data you need and verify every item before deleting anything from Android.

The phones do not connect
- Confirm that Wi-Fi is on for Android and that both phones are close together.
- Reconnect both phones to power.
- If using USB-C, respond to Android’s USB prompt and select a data-transfer mode.
- Close unrelated apps and restart the setup flow if Move to iOS is stuck before the code is accepted.
The transfer stops or appears frozen
Do not switch away from Move to iOS while it is working. Keep the devices powered and near each other. A large category can show little visible progress for a period of time, so allow the process to continue unless an explicit error appears. If the connection repeatedly fails, restart both phones and try the wired USB-C method when available.
Only some data arrives
First check whether the missing item is one of the categories that requires manual handling, such as music, books, or PDFs, or whether the Android app has no App Store equivalent. For a supported category that is genuinely missing, check available iPhone storage and repeat the migration. Apple recommends erasing and repeating the transfer when necessary; do not keep retrying on an iPhone whose remaining space is too small for the selected data.
The iPhone runs out of storage
Stop treating the transfer as complete. Check which Android categories and Micro SD card content were selected, compare them with iPhone capacity, and reduce the selection or free space before trying again. If you need the full set, erase the iPhone and rerun Move to iOS after confirming that the planned content fits.

WhatsApp, messages, or photos are missing
Verify that the transfer reached its completion screen, then open the relevant app or library and look for older content as well as recent items. If the iPhone ran out of space or the process ended early, repeat it rather than wiping Android. For WhatsApp, complete the iPhone app’s activation and use the same account or phone number involved in the migration.
The number is not active
Keep the Android phone working while you contact the carrier or finish the carrier website’s activation steps. Confirm the iPhone’s cellular signal, number, calls, texts, and mobile data before removing the Android SIM or resetting the old phone.
Verify the iPhone before wiping Android
Use this acceptance checklist after setup:
- Contacts: search several names and confirm phone numbers, email addresses, and groups that matter.
- Photos and videos: check recent captures, older albums, and playback of representative videos.
- Messages: open recent conversations and older threads, including conversations with attachments.
- WhatsApp: confirm chats, media, and the account’s phone-number activation.
- Calendars and mail: check future events and confirm that accounts synchronize.
- Files and Voice Memos: open documents and play recordings.
- Call history: compare recent calls with the Android phone.
- Apps: install matched App Store versions and sign in to services that contain important data.
- Cellular service: test calls, texts, and mobile data with Wi-Fi temporarily off.
Keep the Android phone untouched until this checklist passes and any missing manual content has been recovered. Only then should you perform a factory reset or remove the old SIM/eSIM according to your carrier’s instructions.
An app-free transfer option on compatible devices
Apple documents QR-code pairing for compatible Android 17-or-later devices and compatible iOS or iPadOS versions. Eligibility depends on device-manufacturer support, so the option may not appear on every Android phone. When it is offered, follow the QR-code instructions shown during iPhone setup; otherwise use Move to iOS from Google Play. This option does not change the categories that require manual handling or the need to verify the result.
What Apple’s official guidance means for your decision
Apple’s guidance can be reduced to three practical rules: use Move to iOS before setup is complete, choose a direct USB-C connection when both phones support it and speed matters, and keep the devices near each other and plugged into power until the transfer completes. Apple also offers in-store setup assistance, including plan activation and data transfer, for readers who cannot complete the process themselves. Carrier activation and device compatibility still determine what can be completed in a particular case.
