Trade only when you can verify the exact live contract. Coinbase prediction markets are event contracts offered through Coinbase Financial Markets and operated by Kalshi, a CFTC-regulated exchange. A winning contract pays $1 minus fees; a losing contract pays $0. Coinbase’s published material does not establish a separate, always-available category for every company’s earnings, so confirm that an earnings listing exists, read its complete rules and settlement source, check the close time and fees, and risk only money you can afford to lose.
What an earnings prediction contract is
A prediction contract is a trade on a precisely defined future event. You choose an outcome—usually Yes or No—and pay the current market price for one or more contracts. The price reflects the probability implied by recent trading activity, not a guarantee that the outcome will occur. A contract quoted at $0.65 is approximately a 65% market-implied chance, but the quote can change as orders, news and available liquidity change.
Coinbase presents these products through its Predictions area, while Kalshi operates the underlying exchange and determines the final result under the source of truth named in the market rules. Coinbase cannot manually change a result. The wording in the contract, its definitions, its close time and its named settlement source therefore matter more than an earnings headline, an analyst estimate or an app notification.
The official Coinbase pages reviewed for this guide do not document a distinct, continuously available company-earnings contract category. An earnings-related listing may appear, disappear or be unavailable in your jurisdiction. Treat the live Predictions list as the only reliable way to establish that a particular company, reporting period and event are actually tradable.

Can you bet on a company’s earnings on Coinbase?
Only if all of the following are true at the moment you try to trade:
- An eligible earnings-related market is visible in the Coinbase Predictions list.
- You meet Coinbase’s current U.S. eligibility and suitability requirements.
- Your state is not excluded for that product.
- The market rules clearly identify what event is being measured, when trading closes and which source decides the outcome.
- The displayed fees and possible loss are acceptable to you.
Do not assume that “earnings” means a simple comparison between a company’s reported number and an analyst consensus. A contract could instead refer to a particular revenue figure, an adjusted metric, a reporting date, a filing, a percentage move or another defined event. If the listing does not state the exact metric and source, do not place an order until you can locate the complete rules.
Eligibility, states and the application process
Who may be eligible
Coinbase describes these prediction markets as available to U.S. residents subject to state exclusions and other approval conditions. Its introduction material lists Nevada and Michigan among exclusions. The application material also describes a Nevada restriction and says approval can require a U.S. address, a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, identity verification, employment information, financial background and a suitability review.

Passing an application does not make a contract safe or profitable; it only means Coinbase has determined that you may access the service under its current requirements.
Application steps
- Sign in to your Coinbase account.
- Confirm your U.S. address and tax-identification information when prompted.
- Open Predictions and select Get started.
- Confirm your personal details.
- Enter the requested employment information.
- Provide the requested financial and identity information.
- Read and accept the disclosures.
Eligibility, state availability and regulatory conditions can change. Recheck the current in-app notice before each trade rather than relying on a previous approval or an old article.
Before you buy: the safe-order checklist
Complete this sequence for every market, even if you have traded similar contracts before.
- Fund the correct balance. Use settled USD or USDC in the Predictions balance. Do not assume an unsettled deposit or another Coinbase balance is immediately available for an order.
- Open the exact market. Confirm the company name, reporting period, event wording and whether you are selecting Yes or No.
- Open About or Rules. Read the settlement source, event definitions, timing language, conditions for an official result and any linked full Kalshi rules.
- Record the close time. Write down the displayed time zone and date. A general earnings calendar is not a substitute for the contract’s close time.
- Inspect the fee breakdown. Include every displayed charge in your break-even calculation before submitting.
- Set your loss limit. Decide the maximum amount you can lose before you enter. A losing contract pays $0, and Coinbase warns that the entire investment may be lost.
- Check liquidity. Look at available bids and offers and the spread. A displayed quote is not a promise that your full order will fill at that price.
- Choose the outcome and size. Select Yes or No and enter the dollar amount or number of contracts.
- Review the order screen. Confirm side, quantity, estimated cost, fees, possible payout and close time.
- Place and document the order. Save the confirmation and note the contract rules and settlement source used for your decision.
How the payout and profit math works
Settlement at expiration
Each contract has a maximum settlement value of $1 if its specified event occurs and $0 if it does not. Your net result is:

For example, buying 10 Yes contracts at $0.40 costs $4.00 before fees. If the event occurs, the contracts settle for $10.00, producing a $6.00 gross profit before fees. If the event does not occur, the payout is $0 and the loss is the purchase cost plus applicable fees.

The example’s $6.00 figure is gross profit, not a guaranteed return. Fees reduce it, and an early sale produces a market price rather than the fixed settlement value.
Market-implied probability is not certainty
A $0.65 quote can be read as roughly 65% implied probability, but that estimate is produced by trading activity. It is affected by order flow and liquidity and can move before the market closes. A high price does not eliminate the possibility of a total loss.
Fees and break-even
Use the fee amount shown immediately before submission. For a position held to settlement, your break-even condition is that the $1 payout, multiplied by the number of winning contracts, exceeds your purchase cost plus all fees. For an early exit, add the sale proceeds and subtract both entry and exit costs. If the interface does not make a charge clear, pause and obtain clarification rather than estimating.
Reading the contract rules correctly
The event definition
Read the exact sentence that defines what counts as Yes and what counts as No. Identify the metric, unit, reporting period, threshold and any rounding or adjustment language. “Quarterly earnings” is not precise enough by itself; the contract may define a particular company statement or an official statistic.
The settlement source
Settlement is based only on the source named in the contract details before purchase. Coinbase gives examples of official league results for sports, the National Weather Service for weather and official published statistics for some economic data. An earnings market must identify its own source. It could be a filing, an official company release or another specified publication; do not infer the source from a news article.
The close and resolution timing
Separate the trading close from the time a result becomes known. Trading may close before a release, and settlement may occur after the source publishes a qualifying result. Record the exact close time and time zone shown in the contract. A headline published after close cannot change the terms, and an early estimate may not satisfy the contract’s definition.
Linked exchange rules
Because Kalshi operates the exchange, the market may link to full Kalshi rules. Read those rules when they are provided. Definitions, correction procedures, delayed publications and exceptional circumstances can be decisive when an earnings announcement is revised or reported in an unusual format.
What to do when the headline and the contract disagree
It is possible for a news headline, an app display or a real-time quote to appear inconsistent with your expectation. Use this order of operations:
- Open the position and contract details.
- Read the defined event and the named settlement source again.
- Check whether the source has published the qualifying information and whether the contract’s timing conditions have been met.
- Open the linked exchange rules if the market provides them.
- Wait for the official determination rather than trading solely on a headline.
Kalshi determines the outcome under the market rules, and Coinbase honors that determination. Coinbase cannot manually override a result because a different article, analyst interpretation or live price appears more persuasive. If you still believe the determination conflicts with the written rules, preserve the contract page, source publication and order records when contacting support.

Can you sell before earnings or expiration?
Yes, a contract can be sold while the market is open. An early sale can lock in a gain, reduce exposure or cut a loss before the event is settled. The sale price is determined by available market liquidity and may be below the quote you saw or may fill only partially. Include any exit fee in the result.

If you hold through expiration, the position follows the settlement process in the rules. The following choices have different consequences:

If the rule wording or source of truth is unclear, avoiding settlement exposure is safer than guessing. That option exists only before the market expires.
How winnings reach your Coinbase balance
After a market resolves, winnings are credited to the Prediction Market USD balance. Coinbase says automatic transfers to the primary Coinbase balance occur every two hours from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern on business days. No automatic sweeps occur on weekends or U.S. bank holidays.
The amount visible in the primary balance may not match a headline payout immediately. Reinvested winnings, trade fees, additional purchases and multiple open positions can change the Prediction Market balance before a sweep. Check the transaction history and both balances before assuming a transfer is missing.

Risk controls that make trading safer
Limit the amount at risk
Set a maximum loss per market before entering and treat that amount as money that may disappear. Do not use funds needed for rent, bills, debt payments, taxes or emergency savings. Because the losing side pays $0, a position that looks inexpensive can still lose its entire purchase cost.
Control concentration
Several contracts tied to the same company, sector or reporting date can fail for the same reason. Count related positions together when applying your loss limit. Do not assume that buying both sides automatically removes risk; prices, fees and execution costs can make the combined position unprofitable.
Respect liquidity and spreads
Before entry or exit, compare the displayed bid and offer, the available quantity and the order size you intend to use. A thin market can move sharply when one order is placed. If the spread is large relative to your expected edge, passing on the trade may be the safer decision.
Use the rules as your primary information
News, social posts and analyst forecasts can help you form an opinion, but they do not define settlement. Keep a copy or note of the event wording, source, close time and relevant rule section with your trade record.

Keep complete records
Record purchases, sales, quantities, prices, fees, payouts, dates and the contract identifier. Coinbase says prediction-market gains may be taxable income. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and jurisdiction, so retain the platform records and ask a qualified tax professional how to report them.
Recheck volatile conditions
State eligibility, market availability, product terms and regulatory conditions can change. Confirm them immediately before each order instead of relying on an earlier market or an old eligibility decision.

Assuming every earnings event is listed
Mistake: planning a trade from a company’s earnings calendar before checking Coinbase.
Fix: open the live Predictions list and verify that the exact company, period and event wording are present. If no listing appears, there is no contract to buy through that interface at that time.

Buying from a headline without reading the rule
Mistake: treating “beat estimates” or “earnings were positive” as the contract result.
Fix: identify the defined metric, threshold, source and time condition. Only the written definition controls.
Ignoring fees
Mistake: comparing a $1 payout with the quote alone.
Fix: use the fee breakdown shown before submission and include entry and exit costs in your break-even calculation.
Expecting an immediate balance transfer
Mistake: treating a resolved payout as instantly available in the primary Coinbase balance.

Fix: check the Prediction Market USD balance and remember the stated two-hour business-day sweep schedule, with no weekend or U.S. bank-holiday sweeps.
Trying to exit after expiry
Mistake: waiting until after the close and then expecting to sell.
Fix: decide in advance whether you will hold to settlement. If you need an exit, place it while the market remains open.

Mistake: calculating the result from the first displayed price for the entire order.
Fix: inspect liquidity and the final confirmation screen. Your fill can differ when the order is large or the market is thin.
A practical decision framework
Use these questions in order; a “no” at any stage is a reason to stop.
- Do I qualify? I am currently eligible under Coinbase’s U.S. and state requirements and have completed any requested suitability review.
- Does the exact market exist? The live listing names the company, event and period I intend to trade.
- Can I explain settlement? I can state what produces Yes, what produces No, the close time and the named source.
- Can I afford the worst case? I can lose the entire purchase cost plus fees without affecting essential finances.
- Is the price actionable? The spread and available liquidity are acceptable for my order size.
- Is the recordkeeping adequate? I can save the order, fee and settlement information for later review and tax reporting.
This framework does not predict an outcome. It prevents avoidable mistakes caused by unclear terms, unsuitable sizing or an assumption that the product works like a conventional stock trade.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission advises prediction-market customers to look for clear and complete information about risks and obligations, commissions, fees, penalties or other costs, payouts, prices and how settlement determinations will be made. Those checks align with the safest way to evaluate a Coinbase contract: understand the written terms before paying, and do not rely on promotional language or an informal interpretation of an earnings result.

- You understand whether you will exit early or hold through settlement.
- You have a recordkeeping plan for the order, fees, result and date.
If any item is unresolved, do not submit the order. The safest trade is the one whose event definition, timing, cost and worst-case loss you can explain before you commit money.
