You can track daily steps with a smartphone you already own: iPhone records steps in Apple Health, and Android phones can count steps through Google Fit or, where available, Google Health. Carry the phone consistently for a useful personal trend; if you do not want to keep a phone with you, a basic clip-on pedometer is another option.

Track steps with an iPhone

Apple’s Health app automatically counts steps and walking and running distances; you do not need an Apple Watch for the phone to record steps. To view your count, open Health, tap Browse, choose Activity, then tap Steps. Health can also organize data from other apps and devices, and it allows manual data entry. Apple’s instructions for managing Health data explain those options.

Track steps with an Android phone

Google Fit

Google Fit can use a phone’s sensors to collect activity data, including steps, even when the app is closed. In the documented Android setup, enable Track activity metrics and grant the app Physical activity permission if prompted. The exact settings can vary by phone and Android version. See Google Fit’s activity-tracking instructions.

Google Health

Google’s Google Health help page describes phone-only tracking: choose Just the app during setup, or connect the phone from the app’s Connections or Devices settings. You must be logged into the app for step tracking; the phone’s low-power step sensors provide the count. Availability and setup may vary by region or account. Google’s phone setup guide has the current instructions.

Carry the phone consistently

A phone can only register steps while you have it with you. For more consistent readings, keep it firmly in the same pocket when walking. The Indian Health Service recommends fitting a smartphone firmly in a pocket, but placement does not guarantee a perfectly accurate count. If you compare totals over time, use the same device and carry it in the same place: changing phones, apps, or carrying positions can shift the numbers. The Indian Health Service’s step-tracking guidance also recommends consistent use of the same tracker.

Use a basic pedometer if you do not want your phone

A simple pedometer is a separate, optional way to count steps. The Indian Health Service advises placing it at the waistband or belt, over the mid-line of either leg; follow the specific device’s instructions as well. This can be more convenient if you do not routinely carry your phone, but its count may not match a phone’s total.

How accurate are daily step counts?

Treat a step count as an estimate, not exact ground truth. Device type and activity affect the result, so a phone, wrist monitor, and hip pedometer should not be assumed to be interchangeable.

A 2022 CDC-published study of 86 adults ages 18–65 illustrates the point. Across that study’s protocol, wrist-worn monitors recorded an average of 11,247 steps (SD 210), compared with 10,099 steps (SD 39) from hip-worn pedometers. The totals also differed by activity: during activities of daily living, wrist monitors counted more on average, while during treadmill walking and exercise they counted fewer. These figures describe the specific participants, devices, and study conditions; they are not a correction factor for smartphone counts. The study cautions that the widely used 10,000-step recommendation may not be accurate for every user of every monitor. Read the CDC study.

Use steps as one measure of activity

A daily step total can help you notice whether your movement is increasing, but it does not describe every kind or intensity of exercise. CDC guidance for adults focuses on weekly activity: 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, or an equivalent combination, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days per week. At moderate intensity, you breathe harder and can talk but not sing. These are activity guidelines, not a required step count. CDC’s adult activity guidance explains the recommendations.

If you have a chronic health condition or plan a substantial increase in activity, ask a health professional what activity is appropriate for your age, fitness, skill, and health. CDC advice on adding physical activity covers this consideration.
