The simplest setup is a single watchlist containing Nifty 50 and Nifty IT in the official NSEIndia mobile app (or NSE’s mobile web pages), with S&P BSE Sensex added from a BSE quote page or another service that labels the index clearly. Open each quote for its percentage move and chart, then use historical data to compare the same period. Before relying on a number, check whether the service marks it as real-time or delayed.
This arrangement lets you see India’s broad large-cap market, the BSE’s 30-stock benchmark and the technology-sector index together without confusing index points with investment returns.
Set up a three-index watchlist
Follow these steps on a phone. Menu names can change between app versions, but the underlying actions are the same.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Install or open the official NSEIndia app. You can also use NSE/Nifty mobile web pages in your browser if you do not want to install an app.
- Open the index or market-data area. Use the search field and enter Nifty 50. Select the index result rather than a similarly named fund or derivative.
- Add Nifty 50 to your watchlist. The NSE app describes this control as Add to Watch. Confirm that the index’s latest level and percentage change are visible.
- Search for Nifty IT and add it to the same watchlist. Keeping both NSE indices together makes their daily moves easy to scan.
- Add Sensex separately. Open a BSE quote page or a market-data service that explicitly identifies S&P BSE Sensex. Add it to that service’s watchlist, or keep the BSE page pinned beside the NSE watchlist.
Tap an index to open its detailed quote. The NSE app’s Get Quote feature is documented as providing price movements, an intraday graph and corporate information. Look for a historical-data control when you need a comparison longer than the current session.

Check the timestamp before reading a move
A displayed value is useful only when you know its freshness. Look for labels such as real-time, delayed, a “last updated” time or an exchange-data disclaimer. Do not describe a delayed quote as live. If a service hides the timestamp, treat the number as informational rather than a real-time trading reference.
Decide whether you need an account
Browsing an index page may work without signing in, while watchlists, alerts or portfolio tools can require a login. A paid tier may be required for some alert or data features. Test the exact actions you need before depending on them; an app can show a quote while restricting notifications or deeper history.
What Sensex, Nifty 50 and Nifty IT measure
These are market indexes, not individual shares. Each is calculated from a defined basket of companies, so its level summarizes the basket’s movement. Their different baskets and calculation histories mean that the raw index numbers are not directly comparable.
| Index | What it represents | Constituent count and methodology facts | How to use it on a phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P BSE Sensex | One of India’s two major securities-market indexes, covering large, well-known companies from different sectors. | 30 companies, according to SEBI Investor (page accessed 2026). | Use a BSE quote page or a service that clearly labels the S&P BSE Sensex. |
| Nifty 50 | A diversified large-cap benchmark intended to represent India’s broad equity market. | 50 stocks across 13 sectors. It is owned and managed by NSE Indices Limited and has used free-float methodology since June 26, 2009. NSE lists a 1995 base year and a base value of 1,000. | Search for Nifty 50 in the NSEIndia app or NSE mobile pages, then use Add to Watch and Get Quote. |
| Nifty IT | A sector index for companies involved in software development, hardware and IT infrastructure. | The NSE Indices methodology dated March 2026 specifies 10 companies. | Search for Nifty IT in the NSE app or NSE mobile pages and add it beside Nifty 50. |
The number of constituents and the companies in an index can change under the applicable rules. Check the current index page when you need today’s constituent list rather than relying on an old screenshot or article.
Read the quote screen without misinterpreting it
Use percentage change for a same-period comparison
Points are tied to each index’s own scale. A 500-point change in one index does not automatically represent more performance than a 200-point change in another. For a daily check, compare each index’s percentage change over the same timestamp window. For a longer period, record the starting and ending levels and calculate:
Percentage change = (ending level − starting level) ÷ starting level × 100
Use the same start date, end date and data status for all three indexes. If one page is delayed and another is real-time, the apparent gap may reflect different timestamps rather than market behavior.

Use charts for direction, not just the headline number
Open each quote’s intraday graph to see whether a move happened steadily or in a short burst. Then switch to the longest historical interval the service provides for your question. A one-day chart answers “what happened today”; it cannot answer whether one index led over a month or a year.

When a chart offers selectable intervals, choose matching calendar dates for all three indexes. Record whether the service uses close-to-close data or includes an unfinished current session. A chart that is still updating can change before the market session ends.
Normalize the starting point when comparing lines
Because the indexes have different base values and levels, a normalized chart is easier to interpret. Set each index’s value on the chosen start date to 100, then plot subsequent values as an index of that starting point. If your app cannot normalize charts, export or note the levels and apply the percentage-change formula separately. This shows relative performance without implying that the indexes are interchangeable portfolios.
Understand what an index move says
NSE’s index FAQ explains that indexes reflect changing market expectations about future dividends of India’s corporate sector. In practical terms, a rising or falling index is a market-level signal. It does not mean every constituent moved by the same percentage, and it does not predict the next move of an individual share. A sector index such as Nifty IT can diverge from a broad index when technology companies respond differently to earnings, currency movements or industry news.
Choose the phone tracking method that fits your needs
Compare services on the functions that affect the decision you are making, not on screenshots or the number of symbols listed.
| Capability | Questions to ask on the phone | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Data freshness | Is the quote marked real-time or delayed? Is there a last-updated timestamp? | You need synchronized timestamps for a fair comparison and extra caution for time-sensitive decisions. |
| Coverage | Are Nifty 50 and Nifty IT available together? Is Sensex identified as S&P BSE Sensex? | Some exchange apps focus on their own indexes, so Sensex may need a separate BSE page. |
| Charts and history | Can you open an intraday graph and a longer historical-data view? | Daily moves and multi-month comparisons require different time ranges. |
| Alerts | Can you set a level or percentage alert, and does it require login or a paid tier? | An alert is useful only if it is available under the account and data plan you actually use. |
| Watchlist limits | How many indexes or symbols can one list hold? | A limit can force you to split the three benchmarks across screens. |
| Provider clarity | Does the page name the exchange or data provider and show a timestamp? | Clear attribution helps you distinguish an exchange quote from an unlabeled estimate. |
| Portfolio tools | Does the app offer portfolio tracking or only market quotes? | Portfolio features are separate from index monitoring and may require an account. |
The official NSEIndia app documents access to major-index values, personalized watchlists, detailed quotes, portfolio tracking and market statistics. That makes it a useful baseline for Nifty 50 and Nifty IT. It does not remove the need to verify how Sensex is sourced or whether any displayed data is delayed.
Track all three during a normal market check
Use a fixed sequence
- Open the watchlist and note the timestamp shown for Nifty 50 and Nifty IT.
- Open the BSE Sensex quote and check that its timestamp is comparable.
- Read the percentage change first, then the point change and current level.
- Tap each chart to see whether the move is broad or concentrated in a brief interval.
- For a longer review, select identical start and end dates and record each index’s percentage change.
- Write down whether the session is still in progress. Mark an unfinished value as provisional.
Keep a simple comparison log
A note or spreadsheet with date, time, index level, percentage change, data status and source label is enough. Record all three at the same moment. This prevents a common mistake: comparing a just-updated NSE figure with an older Sensex value and treating the difference as performance.
Separate observation from action
Watching an index does not create an order or a diversified holding. Use the watchlist to understand market direction and sector-relative movement. If you are making an investment decision, consider the relevant product’s own price, costs, tracking difference and risk rather than assuming an index quote equals your return.
Set alerts without losing context
Alerts can notify you when an index reaches a level or changes by a percentage, but the exact controls vary by service. Open the index detail page, look for an alert or bell control, choose the threshold and confirm whether push notifications are enabled. Check whether alerts require login, whether they use real-time or delayed data and whether the service limits the number of active alerts.
Also popular on Amazon
An alert is a prompt to investigate, not an explanation of why the market moved. When one fires, reopen the quote, check its timestamp, inspect the chart and look for the corresponding move in the other indexes. A Nifty IT alert with little movement in Nifty 50 may indicate sector-specific activity; it is not proof of a particular cause.
Troubleshoot common phone problems
The search returns several similarly named instruments
Select the result identified as an index and verify the exchange label. Avoid choosing a futures contract, exchange-traded product or similarly named stock when you intend to track the index itself.
Sensex is missing from the NSE watchlist
Sensex is a BSE benchmark. Open a BSE quote page or use a service that explicitly labels S&P BSE Sensex, then add it to that service’s watchlist or keep the page pinned. Do not substitute another BSE index without checking its name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe number does not look live
Look for a delayed-data notice, last-updated time or market-status indicator. Refreshing a delayed feed does not turn it into real-time data. If the timestamp is absent, record the value as delayed or unverified rather than presenting it as live.
The watchlist will not save
Sign in if the service requires an account, then check whether you have reached a watchlist limit. If the app still fails, remove a test item, add the index again and confirm that notifications or synchronization permissions are enabled.
The chart and headline percentage disagree
Check the chart interval, the comparison baseline and whether one display is intraday while the other is previous-close based. Also check timestamps: a chart may be updating while a summary tile remains delayed.
An index appears to move even though some constituents fell
Indexes aggregate constituent movements according to their methodology and weights. Not every company has the same influence, and an index move is not a claim that every constituent rose. Use the constituent list and methodology page when you need to investigate the composition.

Choose the question before the date range
- Today: compare the current percentage changes and intraday paths.
- One event: use dates immediately before and after the event, while noting that the ending session may still be unfinished.
- Several months or years: use historical closes on matching dates and normalize each series to 100.
- Sector versus broad market: compare Nifty IT with Nifty 50, then use Sensex as a second broad-market reference.
Do not compare raw levels
Nifty 50’s published base year is 1995 with a base value of 1,000; other indexes have their own bases and calculation histories. A higher displayed level therefore does not mean that index has performed better. Percentage returns from a common starting date are the appropriate comparison.

Label the data set you used
Write down the app or page, exchange label, retrieval date, timestamp and whether the values were real-time or delayed. Constituent lists, app features and current index values are changeable. Dating a screenshot or note keeps a later reader from mistaking a historical display for today’s market data.
Practical phone routines
Two-minute morning check
Open the watchlist, verify the timestamp, read all three percentage changes and scan the overnight or opening portion of each intraday chart. Save a note only if the move is materially different between the broad indexes and Nifty IT.
End-of-session record
After the session is complete, record the closing levels and percentage changes from the same source. Mark the date and source. This creates a consistent series for later comparison without mixing provisional intraday values and final closes.
Weekly review
Use matching historical dates to calculate each index’s percentage change for the week. Compare the normalized lines, then inspect any divergence in Nifty IT rather than assuming the sector followed the broad market. Keep the review descriptive; an index comparison alone does not establish a trading signal.
What the official index facts mean for your setup
The Sensex’s 30-company basket gives you a BSE large-company reference. Nifty 50’s 50-stock, 13-sector design provides a broader NSE benchmark, while Nifty IT’s 10-company basket isolates a specific technology segment under the March 2026 methodology. Keeping all three visible helps answer three different questions: how large BSE companies are moving, how the broad NSE benchmark is moving and whether the technology sector is behaving differently.
Use the official index pages and methodology documents when you need the current basket, rules or historical definitions. The phone app is the viewing tool; the methodology is the authority for what the index is intended to represent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I track Sensex and Nifty 50 in one phone app?
Yes, if the app covers both exchanges and labels each index clearly. Otherwise, keep Nifty 50 and Nifty IT in the NSEIndia app and use a BSE quote page or another clearly labelled service for S&P BSE Sensex.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why is Nifty IT useful beside Nifty 50?
Nifty IT is a 10-company technology-sector index, while Nifty 50 is a 50-stock diversified index across 13 sectors. Viewing them together shows whether technology stocks are moving differently from the broad NSE market.
Are index quotes on mobile always real-time?
No. A service may show real-time or delayed data. Check the displayed timestamp or data-status notice before calling a quote live.
How should I compare indexes with different levels?
Compare percentage changes over identical dates, or normalize each series to 100 at the same starting date. Do not rank performance by raw index points.
