Keep both kinds of evidence, with their timestamps and identifiers, if you need an auditable monitoring trail.
What a screenshot can—and cannot—tell you
A website screenshot API captures a rendered page. It can preserve the displayed status, labels, charts, or candidate list at capture time. It does not establish an orbit change by itself: pixels do not provide the machine-readable orbital elements and epoch needed to compare records.
For an orbit comparison, use successive orbital records for the same cataloged object, with compatible formats and known element-set epochs. Preserve the original records as well as any calculated differences. Treat the screenshot as supporting evidence of how a source presented the information, not as a substitute for the underlying data.
A newly published element set is not, by itself, proof that an operator maneuvered a satellite. It establishes that the published orbital elements differ; interpretation requires compatible observations and context.

How to connect a launch to cataloged objects
Start with the launch, not an assumed payload identity
When available, collect the launch manifest and expected deployment orbits before launch. Check the provider’s definitions for coordinate frame, time system, units, and output format. T. S. Kelso’s 2017 paper, Challenges Identifying Newly Launched Objects, emphasizes advance coordination and consistent data conventions when matching objects after a launch.
Query by a stable launch identifier
CelesTrak documents catalog queries by catalog number, international designator, group, or name. For a launch-level search, the international designator can retrieve objects associated with that launch. Keep the returned candidates together initially: launch association is useful for finding the population, but it does not prove which catalog entry corresponds to a particular payload.
Resolve individual identities only when there is corroborating evidence. Early assignments should be labeled provisional, especially when the launch deployed many objects or records are still arriving.

Expect a delay after some launches
Newly launched objects may not appear in released orbital records immediately, and identifying each object can take longer than seeing a group of candidates. Kelso wrote in 2017, “It can take days for the JSpOC to start releasing TLEs for a launch involving a large number of objects.” That is a historical caution, not a guaranteed current timeline for every launch.

Prefer extensible formats for current catalog work
Format choice matters as catalog identifiers grow. CelesTrak reported that five-digit catalog numbers ran out on July 11, 2026, and its SATCAT page warned that newly cataloged objects above 99,999 are not available in legacy TLE format. Space-Track recommends formats including JSON, XML, CSV, or OMM that can carry larger identifiers. Check that your parser and downstream tools support the identifiers and format you choose before relying on an automated comparison.
Compare source coverage and freshness
CelesTrak’s SATCAT page distinguishes the current times for SATCAT, GP, and supplemental GP data; those timestamps can differ. Its displayed data was current through October 2–3, 2026. On October 2, 2026, the page reported 34,930 total objects, 17,140 active satellites across tracked, restricted, or lost categories, and 12,664 active satellites with supplemental GP data. These are live catalog counts, not enduring totals.

Space-Track documents access to more than 138 million historical element sets through its GP_History class; its documentation requires a valid user account for basic data access. NASA Open APIs lists a TLE API updated daily from CelesTrak, with name-search and catalog-number endpoints. N2YO publishes a satellite tracking API; its July 2026 documentation lists hourly transaction limits of 1,000 for TLE, position, and several other requests, and 100 for visual passes, radio passes, and “above” requests. Verify current access rules, coverage, timestamps, and usage limits with each provider before automating retrieval or redistributing data.
Keep provenance with every observation
For each object and retrieval, retain:
- Catalog identifier and international designator, when available.
- Element-set epoch and the source’s data-current timestamp.
- Your retrieval timestamp, including the time zone or explicit time standard.
- The provider, query criteria, format, and unmodified raw response.
- The screenshot capture time and the exact page or view captured, if visual evidence is useful.
For example, a record with an older epoch may still be displayed on a recently refreshed page. Keeping the source’s data-current time, element epoch, retrieval time, and screenshot time separate helps distinguish a refreshed page from a changed orbital record.

A practical monitoring workflow
- Define the population. Choose the launch, payload, or group to monitor. Save available pre-launch manifest and expected-orbit information, including its units, coordinate frame, and time conventions.
- Find catalog candidates. Query a source by international designator or another documented stable identifier. Record the query and retain candidates as a group until specific payload assignments are corroborated.
- Retrieve successive records. Use a format that preserves the catalog identifier, such as a documented extensible format. Store raw responses rather than only a parsed summary, along with each element epoch, source-data-current time, and your retrieval time.
- Compare compatible records. Compare records for the same object using a consistent format and conventions. Preserve original values alongside derived comparisons. Describe a result as a change in published elements unless independent evidence supports a stronger claim about a physical maneuver.
- Capture the source view when it adds evidence. Save a screenshot when the rendered page itself matters—for example, to document which candidates a site showed or how it labeled a record. Record the page and capture time. Do not infer an orbit change from visual differences alone.
- Qualify uncertain findings. Mark identity or interpretation as provisional when records are missing, delayed, or ambiguous. Revise that status only when stronger evidence becomes available, retaining the earlier records and their provenance.
Capture a source page with ScreenshotNeo
For the visual-evidence step, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup options can accept a consent banner and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Keep the raw orbital response separately—the screenshot records the rendered page, not the data used for an orbital calculation.
Or skip the browser setup
Use your target source page in place of the documentation URL in these examples. The request format and options are documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation. The cURL example writes a WebP image; the Python example writes the returned bytes; the Node.js example makes the GET request.

A launch query returns several objects
That is a candidate set, not a payload-by-payload identification. Keep the objects grouped under the launch designator and seek independent corroboration before assigning names or roles.
A newly launched object has no current orbital record
Do not treat the absence of a record as proof that the object is missing or not transmitting. Records can be delayed, and mass deployments can take time to resolve. Preserve the query time and source freshness indicators, then check again later.

The page looks newer than the orbital record
Compare the element epoch with the provider’s data-current timestamp and your retrieval time. A recent page capture can display older orbital data; keep the three times distinct.
A parser rejects a large catalog identifier
Check whether the parser assumes fixed-width legacy TLE/3LE identifiers. For identifiers beyond 99,999, use a supported extensible representation such as OMM, JSON, XML, or CSV where the provider offers it, and confirm that every downstream system preserves the full identifier.
Records appear to show a maneuver
First verify that both records refer to the same object and are comparable in format and conventions. An element change is an observation about published data, not conclusive evidence of a physical maneuver.

Check account requirements, current provider terms, transaction limits, and source update times. Space-Track requires an account for basic data access, while API quotas such as N2YO’s can change. Avoid treating a cached or stale page as a new orbital observation.
How to preserve a defensible record
Store the machine-readable record and screenshot as separate artifacts with a shared observation identifier. Include the source name, query, object identifiers, element epoch, source-data-current timestamp, retrieval time, screenshot time, and raw response location in your log. This makes it possible for another analyst to tell whether a difference came from the orbit record, the page presentation, or a later retrieval.
