To track Reserve Bank of India (RBI) liquidity operations, use the latest Money Market Operations press release in the RBI Press Releases archive. Read the release date first, then record the operation date and every row in the RBI OPERATIONS table. Keep transactions conducted on that date separate from earlier transactions that are still outstanding. Finally, use the release’s Liquidity Operations by RBI table to calculate whether the system experienced a net injection or absorption, in ₹ crore.
This method works for repo and reverse-repo auctions, fine-tuning operations, the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF), the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF), and outright open-market operations (OMO). It also prevents a common error: treating an outstanding transaction as if it were a new auction.
Where RBI publishes auction and liquidity data
RBI publishes the authoritative daily snapshot in its Money Market Operations press release. The release date identifies when RBI published the document; the table contains an operation date that may be different. Always preserve both dates in your notes.

- Open the RBI Press Releases archive and locate the newest release titled Money Market Operations.
- Check the publication date and the operation date printed in the release.
- Go to the RBI OPERATIONS section and transcribe every applicable row.
- Open the Liquidity Operations by RBI section in the same release and record the signed net-liquidity figures.
- Save the release title, publication date, operation date, unit (₹ crore), rates and maturity dates with your spreadsheet or notes.
RBI says the table is based on data from RBI and the Clearing Corporation of India Limited (CCIL). Treat the release as the final reference when a secondary market-data display differs.

How to read the RBI OPERATIONS table
The operations table is a row-by-row record of facilities used to add or remove funds from the banking system. Capture the fields exactly as shown rather than copying only the amount.

| Tenor | The number of days until maturity. | Compare the persistence of one-day, two-day and longer funding. |
| Maturity date | The contractual return date. | Identify when the liquidity effect should roll off, subject to any new operation. |
| Amount | The operation size, reported in ₹ crore. | Keep the unit; ₹1,000 crore is not the same as ₹1,000. |
| Current or cut-off rate | The applicable fixed rate or the auction cut-off rate, expressed as a percentage. | Compare the rate with the policy corridor and with other tenors. |
Some releases show fixed-rate and variable-rate repo or reverse-repo operations, fine-tuning operations, MSF, SDF and other facilities in the same section. Do not infer a missing operation from a blank or zero-looking row; record only what the release states.
Separate today’s operations from outstanding operations
RBI’s release can show two different populations of transactions. Today’s operations are facilities conducted for the operation date in that release. Outstanding operations are earlier transactions that have not matured and remain active. A one-day transaction from an earlier date can therefore appear in the outstanding column even though no new auction occurred today.

Use two amount columns in your worksheet:
- Today: auction or operation conducted for the stated operation date.
- Outstanding: earlier operation still open on that date.
Keep the original auction date and maturity date for every outstanding row. This makes it possible to distinguish a fresh liquidity change from the continuing balance of a previous transaction.
Use the Liquidity Operations by RBI table for the net direction
The broader Liquidity Operations by RBI table aggregates the system effect of repo, reverse repo, variable-rate operations, MSF, SDF and outright OMO purchases or sales. Its purpose is different from the row-level operations table: it shows the signed net effect after facilities are combined.
RBI states the calculation as:
Net liquidity is calculated as Repo+MSF+SLF-Reverse Repo-SDF.

Read a positive number as a net injection and a negative number as a net absorption. Keep RBI’s ₹ crore unit and preserve the sign. A negative value is not a missing figure or a failed auction; it means absorption exceeded injection for that category or period.
How to calculate it in a spreadsheet
- Create numeric columns for repo, MSF and SLF injections.
- Create separate columns for reverse repo and SDF absorption.
- Enter all amounts as positive numbers in their respective columns.
- Calculate
=Repo+MSF+SLF-ReverseRepo-SDF. - Apply the sign to the displayed result: positive means injection, negative means absorption.
- Reconcile your result to RBI’s published net-liquidity figure before using it in an analysis.
Outright OMO purchases and sales may be shown in the broader table. Preserve their labels and amounts rather than silently forcing them into the repo or SDF columns. If the release provides a combined total, use that published total for the official daily snapshot.
Worked example: RBI release dated June 7, 2025
The release titled Money Market Operations as on June 07, 2025 is a useful example of how to read the signs and the separation between current and outstanding activity. These are historical observations, not current rates or a forecast.

The same release lists MSF amounts of ₹3 crore and ₹55 crore at 5.75% for one-day and two-day maturities. It also lists SDF amounts of ₹1,95,976 crore and ₹1,294 crore at 5.25% for one-day and two-day maturities. The amounts and rates belong to that June 7, 2025 release only; do not present them as today’s facilities.
What each RBI facility means when you compare operations

The direction in the table is an accounting effect, not a guarantee that overnight market rates will move by the same amount. Tenor, collateral, demand, reserve conditions and the timing of settlement all influence the market response.
Understanding RBI variable-rate auctions
RBI’s Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) scheme describes repo and reverse-repo auctions and a variable-interest-rate auction on a uniform price basis. Under a uniform-price auction, accepted bids receive the applicable auction cut-off price or rate under the scheme’s rules, rather than each accepted participant necessarily paying its own separate bid rate.

The original scheme document records a 10:30 a.m. bid deadline, result announcement by 1:00 p.m. and same-day settlement. Those timings and eligibility rules are historical scheme details and can change. Before relying on them for a live auction, read the latest RBI operational notice for that operation.
When you record a variable-rate result, distinguish the announced cut-off rate from an indicative policy rate. The cut-off is the outcome of that auction’s accepted bids; it is not automatically the standing rate for every RBI facility.
Build a reliable RBI tracking sheet
A small, consistent ledger is more useful than a series of screenshots. Use one row per operation and retain the release metadata.

Daily quality checks
- Confirm that all amounts use ₹ crore and have not been converted inadvertently.
- Check that the operation date and publication date are not being substituted for one another.
- Verify that every outstanding row has a maturity date.
- Check the sign of the published net-liquidity number against the facility mix.
- Recalculate the formula and investigate any difference before publishing a chart or alert.
- Keep historical rates labelled with their date so they cannot be mistaken for current rates.
How to compare several days or facilities
Use six comparison axes rather than comparing headline amounts alone.
- Direction: determine whether each operation injects or absorbs liquidity.
- Facility type: separate repo, reverse repo, MSF, SDF, fine-tuning operations and OMO.
- Tenor and maturity concentration: identify whether liquidity expires in one or two days or is spread over a longer period.
- Amount: compare ₹ crore values using the same unit and sign convention.
- Rate: compare fixed or cut-off rates with the policy corridor and with other operations conducted on the same date.
- Status: keep new activity distinct from the outstanding stock.
This framework answers two different questions: what changed today, and how much RBI-linked liquidity remains active from earlier operations. A large one-day injection can have a different practical effect from a smaller operation with a much longer tenor.

Using the release date as the auction date
Symptom: a spreadsheet shows an operation on the day RBI posted the release even though the table names an earlier operation date.

Fix: retain separate publication-date and operation-date columns and use the table’s operation date for daily comparisons.

Fix: maintain separate status values and calculate a daily-change column from today’s operations only.
Dropping the negative sign
Symptom: absorption appears as an injection in a chart.
Fix: preserve RBI’s signed figure and label the axis as net liquidity, with positive values for injection and negative values for absorption.

Fix: store the unit in the column heading as ₹ crore and convert only in a separate presentation column.
Treating a historical rate as current
Symptom: a past MSF or SDF rate is quoted as today’s rate.
Fix: attach the release date to every rate and consult the latest operational notice before making a current-rate claim.
Assuming scheme timings never change
Symptom: a user misses a deadline because an old LAF timetable was applied to a new notice.
Fix: use the 10:30 a.m. deadline, 1:00 p.m. result time and same-day settlement only as the historical timetable described in the original scheme; verify the latest notice for a live operation.
What the data can—and cannot—tell you
The tables provide an official accounting snapshot: facility, amount, tenor, maturity, rate and signed liquidity effect. They do not, by themselves, establish why a bank submitted a bid, predict the next auction, or prove how bond yields, call rates or the rupee will move. For those questions, combine the operation record with the relevant RBI policy statement and market data, while keeping the liquidity calculation separate from interpretation.
For a dependable daily record, preserve the original release title, both dates, every row, the ₹ crore unit, the rate type and RBI’s published net-liquidity totals. That audit trail lets you reproduce the result, identify when liquidity will mature and compare new operations with the outstanding stock without double-counting.
