If your indoor steps are missing, first keep the phone on your body or wear the watch securely. On a treadmill or walking pad, start an indoor walking workout if your watch offers one. Then check which device the health app is using for its displayed step total, and compare a short walk against a careful manual count if the numbers still look wrong.
Why indoor steps can go missing
Phones and watches count steps by sensing movement, so placement and how you walk matter. A phone left on a desk cannot sense your walk; a phone in a bag or pocket may also miss movement. Samsung says multiple steps may need to be detected before activity is recorded, so very short bouts can be a poor test.
Watches can be affected by fit, movement, and how they are used. Indoor step sensing does not depend on outdoor GPS: Google Fit describes using phone sensors or a connected heart-rate monitor to track steps and activity.

How to troubleshoot a phone or watch step count
- Keep the phone with you. Carry it in a secure pocket near your body throughout the walk rather than leaving it on a desk. Samsung cautions that some steps may not register when a device is carried in a pocket or bag: Samsung Health Step Tracker.
- Test with a continuous walk. Walk continuously for a little longer before deciding the sensor is failing. Samsung notes that multiple steps may be needed for activity detection.
- Wear the watch securely. Check that it is fitted as intended and that it can move with your wrist. Samsung notes that how a watch is worn and used can affect measurement: Samsung Health and Galaxy Watch guidance.
- Start the indoor workout mode. On a treadmill or walking pad, choose Indoor Walk or the equivalent workout on the watch, when available. Apple recommends selecting an indoor workout type for treadmill walks. This supplies exercise context, but does not guarantee a perfect step total: Apple Watch workout types.
- Check the app’s step source. If your phone and watch disagree, look for the step data view, device connection, and source-selection settings in the health app. Samsung Health lets users choose which step data to show: Samsung Health Step Tracker.
- Compare a short sample. On a safe, level walk, count steps manually for a limited stretch and compare the increase shown by the device. A handheld tally counter can make counting easier, but it is an audit aid, not a substitute for routine tracking: TechGearLab’s pedometer comparison.
What a step total represents
A daily step total and a manually started workout session are not necessarily the same record. A phone or watch may contribute to daily steps, while a workout mode additionally logs a session. Check the app’s selected source and view before comparing totals; a displayed number may represent the phone, watch, or a combined view.
#1 Best Overall

- Accurate Step Counting: Our step tracker built-in 3D Tri-Axis sensor detects movement in all directions to record steps reliably whether walking indoors or outdoors; To obtain more accurate step counts, we recommend that you fix the pedometer at the front of your waist for use, so that your step counts will be more accurate
- 10-Step Error Prevention Feature: The pedometer starts counting only after 10 continuous steps are detected, and then adds those first steps to your total; This design helps minimize miscounts from random shaking or sudden movements; Please note that irregular walking patterns, use of a walking aid, or riding in vehicles may affect step-counting accuracy
- Power-Saving Design: Screen turns off after 1 minute of no activity and wakes when you move; The included CR2032 battery can typically last up to one year
- Flexible Carry Options: Comes with a detachable clip and built-in carabiner hook so you can wear it on your waistband, attach to a bag or hang on clothing for convenient use in daily activities
Placement also differs by device: a phone on the body, a securely worn watch, and a clip-on counter sense motion from different positions. If your phone is often out of reach, a standalone clip-on pedometer is another category to consider. A walking training manual describes this type of device, but current model accuracy and synchronization compatibility are not established here: NSCA walking training manual. Confirm app compatibility with the manufacturer if syncing matters, and validate any device with a counted walk.
If your hands are occupied
Holding a phone throughout a walk is unnecessary if a watch can track it. When your hands need to be used while walking, Apple says its Workout app can help earn Exercise credit; choose an appropriate workout and keep the watch correctly worn. Exercise credit is distinct from proving that every step was counted: Apple Watch workout types.

Choosing a practical way to track
| Option | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Phone carried on the body | Passive daily step tracking when you reliably carry the phone. | Steps may be missed if the phone is left behind or its position limits sensed movement. |
| Securely worn watch | Tracking when the phone is not in hand; an indoor workout can log a treadmill session. | Fit, wrist movement, and workout selection affect what it records. |
| Handheld tally counter | Checking a short sample against a device reading. | Requires attention and is not a routine automated tracker. |
| Clip-on pedometer | Independent step tracking when you do not carry your phone. | Model-level accuracy and current app compatibility are not established; check compatibility if synchronization is needed. |
How to judge a discrepancy
Do not assume that two devices should show identical totals: they may be worn in different positions, use different sensing and source settings, or display different data views. Compare the change over the same short walk, with the phone carried and watch worn as intended, and check whether the app is showing one source or combining devices. If the manual count and device remain far apart across a repeatable test, review the device’s fit, placement, workout mode, and connection settings before relying on that total.
