The reliable way to reach 100% is to maintain one item-level master checklist, separate the game’s official completion counter from your personal “everything” goal, and clear the world in a recorded order. For every collectible or side quest, log its name, category, region, prerequisites, missable status, map reference, and proof of completion. Reconcile that list with the in-game percentage after each chapter or major area instead of waiting until the end.
Define what “100%” means in your game
Before collecting anything, identify the target you are actually pursuing. Many games display a 100% figure that counts only selected activities. Story missions, a defined set of collectibles, activities, upgrades, or challenges may be included while other quests, secrets, DLC, or cosmetic items are ignored. A broader personal goal—every quest, every item, every map marker and every optional encounter—can therefore be larger than the game’s own counter.
| Target | What it means | How to track it |
|---|---|---|
| Official 100% | Only objectives included in the game’s completion calculation | Copy the categories and totals shown in the pause menu, statistics screen, or completion page |
| All available content | Official objectives plus optional quests, collectibles, challenges, upgrades, secrets, and side activities | Use a separate master list with a row for every obligation, even when the game does not count it |
| Completionist run | All available content while also recording missables, choices, endings, and evidence | Track prerequisites and order of operations, and save screenshots or quest-completion proof |
Put the two totals in separate sections of your tracker. Otherwise, an apparently complete checklist can conflict with the game’s percentage simply because it contains objectives the counter never measures.

| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Name and identifier | Exact in-game name, number, or a short unique label | Prevents two similarly named items from being confused |
| Category | Collectible, side quest, challenge, upgrade, encounter, ending, or DLC | Lets you filter and compare category totals |
| Region or chapter | Map zone, level, mission, or story chapter | Makes a missing item’s search area visible |
| Prerequisite | Ability, chapter, NPC state, quest, choice, or item required first | Stops you from repeatedly searching an inaccessible location |
| Missable status | Permanent, chapter-limited, choice-dependent, or unknown | Determines whether it must be done before advancing |
| Location reference | Map marker, room, landmark, guide page, or coordinates | Provides a reproducible route back to the objective |
| Status | Not started, available, in progress, complete, blocked, or deliberately skipped | Separates unfinished work from temporarily inaccessible work |
| Evidence and notes | Screenshot, completion screen, reward, date, or decision made | Resolves disputes when a tracker cannot read your save |
Use stable identifiers when the game supplies numbered entries. For unnamed objects, combine the region and a landmark, such as “Northern marsh — broken tower roof.” Keep the original in-game wording in the name field and put your shorthand in a separate note.
Use explicit status values
- Not started: no attempt recorded.
- Available: the prerequisite is satisfied and the objective can be completed now.
- In progress: started but not confirmed complete.
- Complete: the reward, marker, quest screen, or other game evidence confirms completion.
- Blocked: a known prerequisite is missing; record what unlocks it.
- Missed or unavailable: the current save cannot complete it; note the required earlier decision or chapter.
Never mark an item complete merely because you visited its location. Record a pickup animation, quest-complete screen, reward, changed map marker, or another in-game confirmation.
Choose a tracker that fits the game and your play style
The best tool is the one that covers your exact game and preserves enough detail to explain a missing percentage. Compare tools on coverage of the base game and DLC, missable and prerequisite warnings, map quality, per-item notes, synchronization and backup behavior, spoiler controls, and whether the total matches the official counter or a broader community definition.

| Method | Strengths | Limitations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interactive tracker | Mapped markers, filters, category totals, synchronization, and a live percentage bar | Coverage can be incomplete; progress may be stored only in the browser and may not read your save file | Large open worlds with many location-based objectives |
| Spreadsheet or local checklist | Custom categories, spoiler control, offline access, formulas, and full control over notes | You must build the list and map references yourself | Games without a supported tracker or runs requiring unusual completion rules |
| Paper checklist or physical guide | Screen-free reference, handwritten annotations, and printed maps | Harder to search, filter, update, or back up; it is not tied to your save | Players who prefer physical planning or annotated level maps |
Interactive checklist services commonly organize entries by item, questline, region, and map marker. One service advertises the slogan “Track Every Item. Get 100%,” while another uses “Find it. Tick it. Watch it fill.” Treat their catalogs as maintained lists, not immutable game data. A landing page observed in 2026 listed example tracker sizes of 601 items for GTA V, 513 for San Andreas, 277 for Vice City, and 167 for Red Dead Redemption 2; those counts can change as the site updates.
For a local example, a browser checklist for Hollow Knight: Silksong provides notes, filters, and progress backup. A Mina the Hollower checklist explicitly says marks stay on the current device and do not read the save file. That distinction is critical: a checked box is not proof that the game saved the action.

Set up the tracker before you start exploring
- Capture the official categories. Open the game’s completion, statistics, or progress screen and record every category and its required total. Add a separate section for content the counter excludes.
- Import or create the item list. Use one row per collectible, quest, challenge, upgrade, ending, or other obligation. Include DLC in a separate category so it cannot silently inflate your main total.
- Add region and chapter fields. Use the game’s own map names where possible. If an objective spans several regions, record the trigger location and the completion location separately.
- Mark gates before playing. Enter known chapter limits, story choices, NPC schedules, ability requirements, and quest dependencies. If a prerequisite is unknown, mark it as unknown rather than assuming the item is permanently available.
- Decide your spoiler level. Hide solution text while keeping category, region, and missable warnings visible. A spoiler-controlled spreadsheet can keep only the minimum information needed for routing.
- Test your backup. Export the sheet, use the tracker’s backup function, or photograph paper pages. Confirm that a second device can restore the data before investing dozens of hours.
Plan around missables, prerequisites, and route gates
Handle missable quests first
A quest can disappear after a story choice, chapter transition, NPC event, failed timer, or change in world state. Put a “last safe point” note in the missable-status field, such as “complete before entering Chapter 4” or “finish before speaking to the council.” Keep a short “do before advancing” view that contains only currently available time-sensitive entries.
Record dependency chains
When objective B requires objective A, write the relationship in both rows: A unlocks B, and B requires A. This prevents the common error of searching for a collectible that is physically visible but unreachable until a quest, tool, or ability is obtained.
Prioritize traversal and capacity upgrades
Movement abilities, keys, inventory expansions, and other traversal upgrades often open routes to several remaining collectibles. Mark these upgrades as high-priority prerequisites. You can then clear an area once instead of returning repeatedly because the first visit occurred before the necessary ability was available.
Separate choices and endings
For choice-dependent quests, create a row for each required outcome and a parent row for the questline. Note which save, chapter, or route produces each outcome. If a single save cannot contain every ending, label the rows by playthrough and do not count a future route as complete in the current file.
Clear the game region by region
Use a repeatable loop rather than wandering until the map looks empty.

- Select one region or chapter. Filter the master list so only that area and its prerequisites are visible.
- Choose a map layer. Finish one layer—surface, underground, interiors, collectibles, or quests—before switching layers. This reduces duplicate searching.
- Check every marker against the list. Mark the item only after the game confirms the pickup or quest completion.
- Record exceptions immediately. If a marker is blocked, requires a later chapter, or belongs to another quest, change its status and write the trigger in the note.
- Re-scan the region. Compare remaining rows with the in-game map, journal, and category totals. A blank area on the map is not proof that a hidden quest is finished.
- Lock the area as reconciled. Add the date or chapter at which the region was checked. Reopen it only when a new ability, story event, or DLC changes access.
This region-first method makes a stuck percentage diagnosable. You can ask whether a specific region is incomplete instead of searching the entire world again.

| Category | Required by game | Completed in game | Completed in tracker | Difference and action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Collectibles | Value shown by the game | Value shown by the game | Count of rows marked complete | Investigate any nonzero difference |
| Side quests | Only if included in the official counter | Journal or statistics value | Rows marked complete | Check whether optional quests are outside the counter |
| Challenges or upgrades | Official requirement | Statistics value | Completed rows | Check prerequisites and DLC separation |
Use this diagnostic order when numbers disagree:
- Optional content was counted by your list but not by the game. Move it to the broader “everything” section instead of treating it as an error.
- A prerequisite was skipped. Check blocked rows, NPC schedules, and the quest journal.
- A pickup was visited but not collected. Look for the absence of a reward, animation, or changed marker and revisit it.
- The tracker’s catalog differs from the game’s edition. Verify platform, region, DLC, patch, and difficulty-specific content.
- The game updates its counter later. Some objectives register only after leaving an area, completing a quest, or reaching a checkpoint; save, advance to the next safe point, and recheck.
Keep evidence and protect your progress
Evidence is most valuable for ambiguous objectives: hidden interactions, multi-stage quests, collectibles with identical names, and entries whose tracker cannot read the save file. Attach a screenshot of the pickup, quest-completion screen, reward, map marker, or relevant statistics page. In a spreadsheet, store the screenshot filename or a short note; on paper, write the chapter and in-game time.
- Export or duplicate a digital checklist at the end of every play session or major chapter.
- For browser trackers, verify whether data is local to one device, tied to an account, or synchronized across devices.
- Back up before changing platform, clearing browser data, reinstalling the game, or starting a new playthrough.
- Keep separate tabs or files for separate saves so a completed item in one route cannot be mistaken for completion in another.
A physical guide can add annotated maps and checklist columns. For example, TombRaiders.net checklist PDFs pair level maps with checkboxes. The Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide Collector’s Edition is described as covering missions, secrets, collectibles, and inventory; verify the edition and availability before buying. Treat a guide as a reference layer, not as a live record tied to your save.
Practical setups for common game types
Open-world games
Use an interactive map or spreadsheet filtered by region. Keep separate layers for collectibles, stranger or companion quests, activities, upgrades, and random encounters. Reconcile after each story chapter because NPC availability and map access can change.

Chapter-based action games
Make the chapter the primary location field and the level or room the secondary field. Before leaving a chapter, filter for incomplete rows and check every room, alternate path, and return route. A printed map is especially useful when collectibles do not appear on the pause-map.
Metroidvania-style games
Track the ability that gates each item, not only its region. A blocked marker should include the missing ability and the earliest known point at which it becomes available. When you obtain a new movement or combat ability, run a “newly reachable” filter across all regions.
Quest-heavy role-playing games
Track NPC, trigger, prerequisite, deadline, reward, and outcome separately. Include a column for faction or relationship state when choices can close another quest. Mark mutually exclusive outcomes so your final percentage is interpreted correctly for the current playthrough.

The tracker says complete, but the game does not
Open the official counter and compare category by category. Confirm that the tracker covers your platform and DLC, then revisit rows marked complete without direct evidence. A community list may include more objectives than the game counts, or it may use a different definition of completion.

A collectible is visible but cannot be reached
Read the prerequisite field before searching again. Check for a later chapter, traversal ability, quest state, key, capacity upgrade, or alternate entrance. Change the row to blocked and add the unlock condition so the same location is not repeatedly rechecked.
A quest giver or marker disappeared
Check the missable-status note and the last safe point. Review completed story choices and chapter transitions, then inspect the quest journal for a renamed or advanced stage. If the objective is permanently closed in this save, mark it missed, preserve the evidence, and place it in the next-playthrough plan rather than corrupting the current totals.
Progress was lost after changing devices
Restore the most recent export or backup before making new changes. If the tracker stores marks only on the current device, recreate them from screenshots, save evidence, or the in-game statistics screen. Keep the restored copy separate until you verify its totals.
Run a final completion audit
- Confirm every category required by the official counter reaches its stated total.
- Filter the master list for statuses other than complete, and resolve each row as complete, blocked with a documented reason, missed, or intentionally excluded.
- Check all missable and choice-dependent entries against your save’s story route.
- Verify DLC and platform-specific content in separate totals.
- Compare your final tracker counts with the game’s completion screen and capture a screenshot of the result.
- Export the completed checklist so it remains useful if the save, console, browser, or game installation changes.
The combination of an item-level list, explicit prerequisite and missable fields, region-by-region clearing, and regular counter reconciliation turns 100% completion from a memory exercise into an auditable process. You always know what remains, why it is blocked, and whether the game’s percentage is measuring the same goal as your own.
