When smoke makes field visits unsafe or impractical, continue monitoring with a method that measures the same thing you need to know: cameras for visual detections, acoustic recorders for detectable calls, existing telemetry for animal locations, remote sensing for habitat conditions, or validated environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling for trace genetic evidence. These methods are not interchangeable. Record the method and its limits, protect sensitive location data, and check permits and agency direction before changing a survey.

Start with the question, not the equipment

Before substituting remote monitoring for a site visit, define the inference the project needs. Is the goal to establish presence, estimate abundance, track movement, document reproduction, or assess habitat condition? A camera image, a sound recording, an eDNA detection, a telemetry location, and a habitat image answer different questions.

USGS describes camera networks as useful for biodiversity monitoring and abundance or distribution estimation, while the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) describes several sensing approaches for habitat mapping, inventories, and movement-related work. The right choice depends on the species, target outcome, access, conditions, permissions, and available analysis capacity—not on a general ranking of technologies.

Compare methods by what they can establish

Method Useful for Limits to account for
Camera trap Remote visual records and terrestrial biodiversity occurrence monitoring. USGS notes that camera networks can support biodiversity monitoring and abundance or distribution estimates; remote cameras can collect occurrence data over long periods. USGS: Remote camera networks and USGS: Remote cameras and monitoring. The target must be likely to pass within view. Deployment, image review, and consistent protocols still take effort.
Autonomous acoustic recorder Monitoring birds, bats, and other species when their vocalizations or echolocation calls are detectable. USGS describes autonomous audio devices and machine-learning processing, including automated bat-call classification. USGS: Remote monitoring technologies. It will not detect a silent or inaudible target. Placement, sound conditions, processing validation, and appropriate human review affect confidence; a recording or classifier output is not automatically a confirmed identification.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) Detecting trace genetic material organisms leave in their environment. USGS documents applications to native and rare species. USGS: Environmental DNA. The sample medium, assay, target, and intended inference must fit the project. The cited source does not establish a universal protocol for smoke-disrupted surveys.
GPS or radio telemetry Animal locations and movement, when suitable devices and receiver coverage are already available. USFWS: Geospatial services. Telemetry depends on animals already carrying devices, or on authorized capture and tagging, as well as suitable receiver coverage and access to the resulting data.
Optical, thermal, radar, sonar, or lidar remote sensing Habitat mapping, inventories, and some tracking or mapping applications described by USFWS. USFWS: Geospatial services. Sensors differ in target, scale, resolution, cost, and permission requirements. An image of habitat does not by itself establish that a species is present.
Uncrewed aircraft (drones) Some authorized scientific research, wildlife inventory, and wildfire-assessment missions. USGS: Remote monitoring technologies. Near active wildfires, a flight may be prohibited and can interfere with aerial firefighting. Smoke does not show that airspace is open or safe. DOI: No Drone Zone Near Wildfires.

Choose a smoke-resilient monitoring plan

  1. Define the measure. Write down whether the project needs presence, abundance, movement, reproduction, or habitat condition. Do not treat a detection from one method as an equivalent replacement for a different measure.
  2. Check what can be monitored remotely. Match the target’s detectability to the sensor: visible passage for a camera, detectable sound for an acoustic recorder, an appropriate sample and validated assay for eDNA, or existing telemetry for movement information.
  3. Check safety, access, and authorization. Follow agency direction, land-manager requirements, permit conditions, and incident restrictions. Do not deploy people or equipment into unsafe conditions to preserve a schedule.
  4. Document the change and its limits. Record method, effort, placement or coverage, conditions, and any change from the established protocol. Explain what the observations can and cannot support when comparing them with earlier data.
  5. Protect sensitive records. Limit access to precise locations and follow the project or agency rules for handling sensitive species information.

Why drones are a special case near wildfire

A smoke event does not establish that a drone can safely or legally fly. The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) warns that unauthorized flights near active wildfires can disrupt firefighting. Its May 29, 2026 notice reported 53 unauthorized drone incursions during wildfires in 2025; 44 of those incidents directly interfered with or threatened aerial firefighting operations. These figures describe incidents in 2025, as reported in a 2026 notice—not a rate of disruption for all drone flights.

Keep permits and recovery objectives in view

For U.S. endangered-species work, USFWS says its responsibilities include monitoring and evaluating species status and implementing recovery plans; administration of the Endangered Species Act is shared with NOAA. USFWS describes the Act’s purpose as “to protect and recover imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend.” Survey requirements depend on the species, location, land access, and project authorization. Consult the applicable recovery plan, permit conditions, land manager, and relevant agency before changing a protocol. USFWS: About the Endangered Species Act.
