To check today’s FII/FPI and DII activity, use the National Stock Exchange of India’s official FII/FPI & DII trading activity report, open the capital-market table, choose either the NSE-only or the combined NSE, BSE and MSEI view, and read the net value column in ₹ crore. Net value is buy value minus sell value. Save the date and table scope with every figure, because the two NSE views are different series. For publication-quality or reconciliation work, check the foreign-investor figure against the final-data links that the Securities and Exchange Board of India directory provides for NSDL or CDSL.
What FII/FPI and DII flow data tells you
The daily report groups market-wide purchases and sales into two broad institutional categories:
- FII/FPI is the foreign-investor category shown by the exchange. Indian regulatory reporting increasingly uses foreign portfolio investor (FPI); retain the exact label displayed by the source when you record a value.
- DII is the domestic institutional-investor category.
For each category, the report gives aggregate buy value, sell value and net value for the selected market scope. The calculation is:

- A positive result means net buying.
- A negative result means net selling.
These are market-wide aggregates, not a list of individual funds and not stock-specific recommendations. A day of net buying or selling does not establish that the market, an index or a particular share will rise or fall next. Treat the trade date, scope, unit and provisional/final status as part of the data point itself.

The three-minute daily check on NSE
Use this procedure when you need the latest exchange-published activity.
- Open the official report. Go to NSE’s FII/FPI & DII trading activity report.
- Select the capital-market table. Do not use a different segment if you are building a cash-equity flow series.
- Choose one scope. The report exposes an NSE-only capital-market table and a combined NSE, BSE and MSEI capital-market table. Decide which series you need before copying any numbers.
- Read the row for the trade date. Record the category, buy value, sell value and net value. Values are displayed in ₹ crore.
- Check the arithmetic. Subtract sell value from buy value. The result should match the reported net value, subject to normal display rounding.
- Save the file. NSE provides a CSV download. Keep the original row rather than retyping it, and preserve the report date and chosen scope in your file name or notes.
- Mark the status. NSE describes its trade data as provisional. If the number will be published, used in a reconciliation or compared with a depository series, verify the foreign-investor value through the SEBI directory’s NSDL or CDSL daily report.
NSE’s own notice says: “This trade data is provisional and subject to change, inter-alia, on account of custodial confirmation process, modifications etc.” A later version can therefore differ from the first value you copied.
What to copy from each row

NSE-only versus the combined exchange view
The two capital-market views answer different questions. The NSE-only table covers activity reported for NSE. The combined table aggregates NSE, BSE and MSEI. Because the market coverage changes, a combined value is not an updated or interchangeable version of the NSE-only value.

Switching views halfway through a spreadsheet creates an artificial jump that can look like a sudden institutional trade. If a source changes its default view, retain the scope column and reject any comparison that mixes the two definitions.

How to verify FPI data through SEBI, NSDL or CDSL
NSE directs readers to the depositories for final FII/FPI data. The SEBI directory provides links to NSDL and CDSL pages that cover several levels of detail:
- Latest-date daily trends.
- Current-month data.
- Historical archives.
- Calendar-year and financial-year details.
- Fortnightly sector-wise data.
- Assets under custody.
- Trade-wise equity and debt data.
Use the depository layer when the status of a foreign-investor number matters more than the speed of the first exchange update. Keep the exchange row and the depository row as separate observations until you have confirmed that their definitions, date and scope match. A depository report may be final for FPI reporting while the exchange trade row remains provisional; that difference is a status distinction, not necessarily an error.
Finding reports from the SEBI directory
- Open SEBI’s directory for FPI data.
- Choose the NSDL or CDSL link for the latest-date daily report when checking a recent session.
- For history, select the relevant current-month, archive, calendar-year or financial-year view.
- Use sector-wise, assets-under-custody or trade-wise reports only when that extra granularity answers your question.
- Record the report name, date, category label and whether the figure is presented as a final depository value.
NSDL’s report menu
NSDL separately exposes links for latest FPI and DII data, current-month and archive views, calendar-year and financial-year net-investment details, quarterly reports, country and sector views, and trade-wise reports. A latest-day aggregate is not the same product as a sector or trade-wise report, so choose the menu item that matches the analysis you intend to perform.
Download historical FII/FPI and DII data
For a repeatable history, use the NSE CSV as the daily exchange series and the SEBI-linked NSDL or CDSL archives for longer periods and cross-checks. The central rule is consistency: one row per trade date, one definition of market scope, one currency unit and one category label.

Spreadsheet columns that prevent confusion
Create these columns before importing the first row:

| Revision note | Explains later corrections, rechecks or status changes. |
Keep the source URL even when the file is from an official site. Report pages can change their default date or table view, while a saved URL and retrieval time document what you actually saw.
Importing the NSE CSV safely
- Download the CSV for the selected capital-market view.
- Check that the date column is interpreted as a date rather than text in a regional format.
- Confirm that buy, sell and net columns are numeric and that negative net values retain their minus sign.
- Add the scope value to every imported row; do not rely on a worksheet tab name.
- Keep the original downloaded file in an archive so a later revision can be compared with the first capture.
- Recalculate net value in a separate check column and flag any mismatch for review instead of silently overwriting the source value.
Why websites show different FII numbers
Different figures usually reflect a definition, timing or status difference. Check these causes in order:

- Different exchange coverage. One page may show NSE-only while another shows NSE+BSE+MSEI.
- Provisional versus final status. NSE trade data can change after custodial confirmation, modifications and related processing. NSDL or CDSL may show the depository’s final FPI figure.
- Different report dates. A page labelled “latest” can move to the next trading day after a session closes. Compare the explicit trade date, not the page’s retrieval date.
- Different category labels. A source may use FII, FPI or a broader institutional label. Confirm that you are comparing the same category.
- Different time span. Current-month, calendar-year, financial-year, quarterly and archive reports are not daily rows and should not be read as if they were.
- Different granularity. Aggregate flow, sector-wise data, assets under custody and trade-wise equity/debt data measure different things.
- Rounding or revision. Displayed values may be rounded, and a provisional row may be revised after the first download.
A reconciliation checklist
- Write down the trade date shown by each source.
- Confirm whether the exchange row is NSE-only or combined NSE+BSE+MSEI.
- Confirm that both values use ₹ crore, not lakh, million or another unit.
- Check whether the source calls the number provisional or final.
- Compare buy and sell values as well as net value; an identical net with different components may indicate a transformation or rounding issue.
- Record the retrieval time and retain both versions when a provisional number changes.

The DII calculation is 15,258.71 minus 13,134.57 = 2,124.14. The FII/FPI calculation is 12,560.91 minus 13,103.62 = -542.71. These values belong to the combined exchange scope and should not be merged with an NSE-only row for the same date.
Use the data for analysis without overstating it
Daily flows are useful as a descriptive market series. They can show whether institutions were net buyers or sellers in a defined session and let you examine persistence across days, months or years. They cannot identify the individual fund behind a transaction, explain the fund’s purpose, or prove what a particular stock will do next.
Questions a responsible dashboard can answer
- Were FII/FPI flows positive or negative on a specified trade date?
- Did DII net buying offset FII/FPI net selling within the same scope?
- How did a month or financial year accumulate under one consistent definition?
- Did a reported value later change after a provisional update?
- Is a movement broad market activity, or does a sector-wise or trade-wise report provide the required detail?
Questions the aggregate row cannot answer
- Which individual institution bought or sold.
- Which stock caused the aggregate flow.
- Whether the next session will be positive or negative.
- Whether foreign flows are “final” unless the relevant depository report has been checked.
When presenting a chart or article, put the date, scope, unit and status in the caption or adjacent data table. A label such as “FII buying today” is incomplete without those qualifiers.

The official web report and CSV are free and sufficient for a manual daily log. A small spreadsheet workflow is usually the simplest option for a personal record or occasional article:

- Download the CSV after the trading session.
- Append its rows to the master sheet.
- Populate scope, source URL and retrieval time.
- Run the net-value arithmetic check.
- Flag provisional rows for a later depository check.
For a recurring dashboard, the same controls should be implemented in an import script or data pipeline: preserve the raw file, normalize dates and numeric fields, require a scope value, and retain revision history instead of replacing old rows without a note. Any automated feed or market-data service should be evaluated for current availability, pricing, geographic access and regulatory compliance before it is used in production; those terms are not established by the official daily report itself.
Troubleshooting common mistakes
“My net value does not match the report.”
Check whether the source rounds buy and sell values for display, whether a minus sign was lost during CSV import, and whether you accidentally used values from different scopes or dates. Re-download the original CSV and compare the raw row before editing the spreadsheet.
“Two sites show different values for the same day.”
Compare scope first, then provisional/final status, category label, unit and report date. Do not average the numbers or choose the larger one. Store both with their definitions until the discrepancy is explained.

“The report has moved to another date.”
Use the trade-date field in the table, not the date on which you opened the page. Save the CSV and retrieval time so that a later page refresh does not erase the evidence of the earlier provisional value.
“I need a sector or individual trade explanation.”
An aggregate daily FII/FPI or DII row cannot provide that detail. Follow the SEBI directory to the relevant NSDL or CDSL sector-wise, assets-under-custody or trade-wise report, and keep that report as a separate data series.
“I called the value final because it came from an official page.”
Official does not automatically mean final. NSE labels its exchange trade data provisional. Use the depository report when you need final FPI reporting, and state which source supplied the final designation.
