To judge whether semiconductor stocks face shortage or oversupply, do not rely on one headline or one company forecast. Build a three-layer dashboard: monthly industry shipments and prices from World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), manufacturing-cycle data from SEMI, and company filings and earnings calls. A shortage call is most credible when units, pricing, utilization, inventory quality, lead times and capacity plans all point in the same direction.
What you are trying to measure
A semiconductor cycle has at least two different questions: how much end-market demand exists, and how much supply is available at the product, node and supplier level. Revenue can rise because prices increased even when unit demand is flat. Inventory can rise because customers are preparing for a strong launch rather than because products are unwanted. Capacity can expand while a specific memory type or process node remains constrained.
Your objective is therefore not to predict a single “chip market” number. It is to determine whether the exact product and supply-chain position that drive a company’s earnings are tightening, balancing or entering excess supply.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Tightening: shipments and utilization improve, inventories fall relative to sales, prices stabilize or rise, and customers accept allocation or longer lead times.
- Balancing: shipments, utilization, inventory and pricing move broadly in line with one another.
- Oversupply: inventory grows faster than sales, utilization weakens, prices come under pressure and suppliers cut production or delay capital spending.
Build the dashboard in three layers
Layer 1: Industry shipments, units and average selling prices
Start with WSTS monthly data. The series covers semiconductor revenue, unit shipments and average selling prices (ASPs) by product group, end use and region. The Semiconductor Industry Association says the data are collected directly from member companies and that monthly reports are released within five weeks after month end.

For the company you are studying, record the product categories that actually drive earnings: memory, logic, analog, discrete, sensors or optoelectronics. Add the relevant end markets, such as data center and artificial intelligence, smartphones, personal computers, automotive, industrial and consumer electronics. Calculate both month-over-month and year-over-year changes.
Always separate price from volume. If revenue is up 20% but units are flat and ASPs are up 20%, the improvement is price-led. That may support margins temporarily, but it is a different signal from broad-based unit growth. A simple check is to calculate ASP as reported revenue divided by reported units, then compare the result with the published ASP series. Differences can reflect product mix, currency or different reporting scopes.
WSTS forecasts are useful as scenarios, not guarantees. WSTS issues forecasts twice a year; fuller detail is available to members or licensed distributors, while condensed releases are public. Record the publication date, forecast horizon, geography and product definition beside every forecast number. Do not combine a global forecast with a company that sells mostly into one region without adjusting the assumption.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →As a current reference point, WSTS reported global semiconductor sales of USD 795.6 billion in 2025, up 26.2% year over year, and fourth-quarter 2025 revenue of USD 238.9 billion, up 38.4% year over year (World Semiconductor Trade Statistics, 2026). Those aggregate figures do not prove that every chip category or company was in shortage; use the product and end-market breakouts before drawing an investment conclusion.
Layer 2: Manufacturing-cycle indicators
SEMI’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor provides the middle layer between broad market totals and an individual issuer. It tracks electronics and integrated-circuit sales, IC inventory, wafer shipments, fab utilization, equipment billings, fab capacity, capital expenditure and leading-company revenue.
The most useful combination is inventory plus wafer shipments plus utilization:
| Observed pattern | Likely interpretation | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory rising faster than sales; utilization falling | Excess supply or customer digestion is becoming more likely. | Price cuts, production reductions, cancellations and weaker orders. |
| Inventory falling; shipments and utilization improving | Supply is tightening relative to demand. | ASP increases, allocation, longer lead times and customer commitments. |
| Inventory and utilization both rising | Could be deliberate build-ahead for a strong cycle, not automatically oversupply. | Customer demand, launch schedules, pricing and lead-time evidence. |
| Inventory falling while utilization remains weak | Could reflect production cuts rather than healthy sell-through. | Revenue, unit shipments, gross margin and management’s production explanation. |
Do this by segment. Memory, logic, analog, power and mature-node products can be in opposite phases at the same time. A strong aggregate index can conceal weakness in a company’s specific market.

SEMI’s 2025 outlook illustrates why timing matters: weak consumer demand had pushed IC inventories up 6% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2024, with further sequential increases forecast for the first and second quarters of 2025 (SEMI, 2025). Treat that as a dated cycle observation, not a permanent condition.

- Inventory dollars and inventory days.
- Finished goods, work in process and raw-material mix.
- Reserves, write-downs, excess-and-obsolete charges and capacity charges.
- Revenue by product and end market.
- Pricing, discounts and gross-margin movement.
- Supply constraints, allocation, lead times and customer commitments.
- Capacity additions, equipment deliveries, cleanroom schedules and capital spending.
Compare the numbers with management’s explanation. A lower inventory-days figure can result from genuine sell-through, reduced production, a change in product mix or accounting effects. Conversely, a high inventory balance may be intentional if customers are building ahead of a launch and the company has firm commitments.
Microchip Technology reported 185 days of inventory at March 31, 2026, versus 251 days at March 31, 2025, while also reporting lower dollar inventory as it balanced production and customer demand (Microchip Technology, 2026). The useful conclusion is not simply “inventory is better”; it is that the days metric must be read alongside dollars, revenue, production decisions and margin performance.
Intel reported that, in the second quarter and first half of 2026, market demand exceeded available product supply because of factory-capacity constraints. It also said shortages of substrates, memory and other critical components could persist into the following year (Intel, 2026). That is issuer commentary, so label it as management’s outlook and test it against customer and supplier evidence.
Micron reported that AI-driven memory and storage demand was outpacing industry supply. It linked constrained DRAM and NAND supply with higher pricing and margins (Micron Technology, 2026). This is stronger when the company’s pricing evidence agrees with shipment, utilization and customer data.
How to investigate lead times, allocation and capacity
Lead times and allocation
In earnings materials, search for changes in quoted lead times, allocation percentages, customer prepayments, capacity reservations, backlog quality and order visibility. A lead-time extension matters more when it appears across several suppliers or when customers are paying deposits and accepting allocation.
Do not treat every long lead time as a shortage. It can reflect a product transition, a qualification delay, logistics disruption or a supplier’s decision to prioritize strategic customers. Ask whether the constrained part is the company’s actual bottleneck and whether pricing is responding. If lead times lengthen but ASPs fall and utilization declines, the apparent shortage may be limited to one distributor or a temporary scheduling issue.
Capacity plans
Capacity additions are both a solution to shortage and a future oversupply risk. Record the announced start date, process node, product mix, expected output, equipment status and customer commitments. A fab under construction does not add usable supply until qualification and volume production begin.
TSMC says its planning process combines top-down market analysis with bottom-up customer assessments and uses multiyear customer roadmaps and production plans. It also reported that nearly 20 fabs worldwide were in progress as it expanded capacity (TSMC, 2025–2026 materials). This supports a long-term supply response, but it does not specify when every project will produce the exact chips an investor is analyzing.
TSMC’s 2025 annual report states that 2-nanometer technology entered high-volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2025, with N2P and A16 volume production scheduled for the second half of 2026 (TSMC, 2025 annual report). Separate leading-edge capacity milestones from mature-node and specialty capacity; they serve different markets.

Micron’s fiscal first-quarter 2026 prepared remarks included the statement: “We believe that the aggregate industry supply will remain substantially short of the demand for the foreseeable future.” (Micron Technology, fiscal Q1 2026 earnings-call prepared remarks.) Treat this as management’s forward view, then check whether pricing, utilization and customer behavior confirm it.
Is AI-chip demand real or just an order spike?
AI demand deserves a separate test because a few large buyers can create very large orders. Start with units and dollars in the relevant logic, DRAM, NAND or high-bandwidth-memory categories rather than using the phrase “AI demand” as a market total. Then look for evidence at several points in the chain: a designer’s backlog and customer commitments, a foundry’s wafer starts and utilization, a memory supplier’s pricing and allocation, and equipment or materials demand.
Real, durable demand should eventually appear in more than one quarter and in more than one company. Look for customers making capacity reservations, suppliers discussing multiyear roadmaps, improving utilization and firm pricing. A one-time order can raise revenue without creating sustained unit growth. If orders rise while customers’ inventories and cancellations also rise, the signal may be channel filling or a build ahead of a product transition.
Keep AI exposure distinct from general data-center exposure. A company may sell networking, storage or power components into data centers without supplying the scarce accelerator or memory product that is driving headlines. Map the exact product, node and customer before applying an AI-growth assumption to earnings.
Segment, node and geography checks
Before comparing two companies, classify each by its position in the chain:
| Dimension | Examples to separate | Why it changes the signal |
|---|---|---|
| Product | DRAM, NAND, high-bandwidth memory, logic, analog, power and sensors | Each has different inventories, pricing cycles and capacity constraints. |
| Process node | Leading edge, mature and specialty nodes | A shortage at an advanced node does not imply a shortage of mature-node analog chips. |
| End market | AI and data center, smartphones, PCs, automotive, industrial and consumer | Customer digestion can be severe in one market while another expands. |
| Geography | Production location, customer location and shipment destination | Regional demand and export or logistics conditions can diverge. |
| Supply-chain role | Fabless designer, foundry, integrated device manufacturer, memory maker, equipment supplier, materials supplier or outsourced assembly and test provider | Revenue exposure and inventory ownership differ by role. |
TSMC identifies worldwide demand and capacity supply, pricing, production capacity and technology development as significant revenue drivers. Use those categories when mapping a foundry’s outlook to the designers and end markets that consume its wafers.
A repeatable monthly workflow
- Define the earnings driver. Write down the company, product, node, end market and geography that determine most of its profit.
- Update WSTS data. Enter revenue, units and ASPs for the matching product and end-use series. Calculate month-over-month and year-over-year changes and mark the release date.
- Update SEMI indicators. Add IC inventory, wafer shipments, fab utilization, equipment billings, capacity and capital expenditure for the same period.
- Read issuer documents. Record inventory days and dollars, reserves, write-downs, pricing, lead times, allocation, customer commitments and capacity comments from the latest filings and call.
- Triangulate the chain. Compare the company with suppliers, foundries, customers and equipment providers. A shortage assertion is more credible when independent participants describe the same constraint.
- Build three cases. In the bull case, specify unit growth, ASP, utilization, inventory normalization and capacity timing. In the base case, use moderate assumptions. In the bear case, stress price declines, weaker units, excess inventory and faster capacity additions.
- Recheck after events. Refresh the dashboard monthly and after every major earnings release. Mark each observation with publication date, geography, product definition and whether it is reported data or guidance.
How to choose and compare data sources
| Evaluation axis | WSTS | SEMI | Company disclosures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency | Monthly shipments and pricing. | Manufacturing and market indicators published on its release schedule. | Usually quarterly, with interim earnings updates. |
| Supply-chain view | Industry aggregate. | Manufacturing system and leading-company measures. | One issuer’s products, customers and facilities. |
| Granularity | Product, end use and region. | Inventory, wafers, utilization, equipment, capacity and capital spending. | Product mix, inventory composition, pricing and constraints. |
| Evidence type | Reported historical data plus twice-yearly forecasts. | Reported indicators and outlook commentary. | Historical financial results plus management guidance. |
| Independence | Data collected from member-company submissions. | Industry market-intelligence series. | Issuer-controlled disclosure. |
| Best use | Detect broad unit, revenue and ASP direction. | Identify inventory and utilization phases. | Test whether the specific company is benefiting or suffering. |
Access, cost and documentation
Public condensed WSTS releases can establish the broad direction, while members or licensed distributors provide fuller detail. SEMI’s market-intelligence products are designed for users who need IC inventory, wafer shipments, fab utilization, capacity and capital-expenditure series. Check the current product description, license terms and geographic eligibility before budgeting for either service; no universal price or referral arrangement should be assumed.
SEC EDGAR and issuer investor-relations portals are practical destinations for 10-Ks, 10-Qs, earnings releases and call materials. They allow an investor to verify inventory dollars, reserves and capacity statements directly rather than relying on a data vendor’s summary. Keep a dated copy or link, the page reference, the unit of measure and the definition of each series. If a provider revises a historical series, note the revision instead of silently replacing the old observation.
For reproducibility, use a consistent spreadsheet or database with columns for publication date, period measured, product, node, end market, geography, revenue, units, ASP, inventory, utilization, pricing comment and confidence level. A forecast should never sit in the same column as reported data without a clear label.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using revenue as a demand proxy
Correct for ASP changes and currency effects where available. Rising revenue with falling units can indicate price inflation or mix rather than expanding consumption.
Calling any inventory increase bearish
Check utilization and shipments. A planned build ahead of a product launch can raise inventory while demand is healthy. Conversely, falling inventory after production cuts may signal weak sell-through.
Combining unrelated products
Keep memory, logic, analog, power and sensors separate. Also split leading-edge wafers from mature and specialty capacity.
Treating management guidance as a fact
Label forecasts, shortage claims and capacity timelines as guidance. Compare them with customers, suppliers, pricing and independent industry indicators.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring accounting quality
Read reserves, write-downs, work-in-process and finished-goods disclosures. Inventory days without inventory dollars and product mix can mislead.
Assuming new fabs immediately remove shortages
Track qualification, equipment installation, yield learning and volume-production dates. Announced capacity is not equivalent to saleable output.
Comparing mismatched periods
Align the month covered by WSTS, the period covered by SEMI and the issuer’s fiscal quarter. A company can report a quarter before the latest industry series is released, creating an apparent contradiction that is really a timing difference.
What the latest evidence implies—and what it does not
The cited data show exceptionally strong aggregate growth alongside product-specific constraints and continuing capacity investment. WSTS reported 2025 sales of USD 795.6 billion; Intel and Micron described supply shortages; and TSMC continued expanding capacity. Together, these facts support a differentiated, product-level view rather than a blanket “all chips are scarce” or “all chips are oversupplied” conclusion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which data should I check first when deciding whether chips are in shortage?
Start with WSTS monthly revenue, unit shipments and ASPs for the relevant product and end market. Then check SEMI inventory, wafer shipments and fab utilization, and finally verify the pattern in company filings and earnings calls.
Does rising semiconductor revenue prove demand is strong?
No. Revenue can rise because ASPs increased, product mix changed or currency moved. Compare revenue with units and ASPs; sustained unit growth is a stronger demand signal than price-led revenue growth.
Is falling inventory always bullish for a chip stock?
No. Falling inventory with improving shipments and utilization can indicate healthy sell-through and tightening supply. Falling inventory while utilization and revenue remain weak may simply reflect production cuts.
How can I test whether AI-chip demand is durable?
Look for repeated unit growth, firm pricing, customer commitments, capacity reservations, improving utilization and corroboration from designers, foundries, memory suppliers and equipment companies. A single large order is not enough.
How long does it take for a new fab to relieve a shortage?
An announced fab adds no saleable output until construction, equipment installation, qualification, yield learning and volume production are complete. Track the specific node, product mix and scheduled production date.
What is the difference between WSTS and SEMI data?
WSTS is an industry shipment, revenue and ASP series with product, end-use and regional detail. SEMI adds manufacturing-cycle measures such as IC inventory, wafer shipments, utilization, equipment billings, capacity and capital spending.
Where can an individual investor obtain the underlying information?
Use public condensed WSTS releases, SEMI market-intelligence offerings for deeper manufacturing data, and SEC EDGAR or issuer investor-relations portals for filings and earnings materials. Check current licensing, pricing and eligibility for paid datasets.
How often should the dashboard be updated?
Update monthly as new WSTS and manufacturing indicators arrive, and refresh it after every major earnings release. Label every observation with its publication date, period, geography, product definition and whether it is reported data or guidance.
The Bottom Line
Track chips by product, node, end market and supply-chain role—not as one market. Combine WSTS units, revenue and ASPs with SEMI inventory, wafer shipments and utilization, then test the signal against issuer inventory quality, pricing, lead times and capacity timing. A shortage or oversupply thesis is investable only when several independent measures agree.
