Track an AI agent purchase by keeping two records together: the retailer’s order confirmation and the payment provider or card account’s transaction record. The retailer’s record is for order acceptance, fulfillment, returns, and support; the payment record is for the payment’s status. Agent-specific signals may help connect a purchase to your instruction, but the official materials described here do not establish a single tracker that covers every retailer and payment provider.

Why one purchase can appear in more than one place

A purchase has an order lifecycle and a payment lifecycle. The retailer records whether it accepted the order and what happens to fulfillment. A payment provider or card account records payment activity, such as an authorization or posted charge. Those records are related, but they are not interchangeable: an order confirmation is not proof that a charge has posted, and a card transaction does not by itself show whether an order has shipped or been delivered.

In the documented OpenAI Agentic Commerce Protocol flow, the merchant validates and accepts or declines the order, processes payment through its existing provider, and manages fulfillment and support. OpenAI’s checkout interface can pass checkout information and reflect the result, but OpenAI states in its Agentic Commerce Protocol key-concepts documentation: “OpenAI is not the merchant of record in the Agentic Commerce Protocol.”

How to reconcile an agent-initiated purchase

  1. Save the retailer’s confirmation. Keep the order number, confirmation, and any later status messages. Use the retailer’s order page or support channel for acceptance, fulfillment, delivery, returns, and order-related questions.
  2. Check the payment record separately. Review the relevant payment provider or card account for the authorization and, later, the posted transaction. A merchant may process payment through its own payment service provider, so the payment record may not be in the AI interface.
  3. Keep the instruction and approval with the records. Save what you asked the agent to buy and any confirmation or approval step. If your setup exposes agent-specific transaction details, retain those too; they may help establish how a transaction relates to your intent.
  4. Compare identifying details if the records do not match. Check the retailer order ID, transaction reference if available, date and time, amount and currency, merchant descriptor, payment status, and the original instruction. These are practical reconciliation fields, not a universal data format prescribed by the cited protocols.
  5. Contact the party responsible for the discrepancy. Ask the retailer about order acceptance, delivery, or returns; ask the payment provider or card issuer about a payment record or its status. Provide the relevant order or transaction reference and keep both parties’ responses with your records.

What each system can tell you

Record or layer Useful for Boundary to keep in mind
Retailer or merchant order record Order acceptance or decline, fulfillment, delivery, returns, and merchant support in the documented OpenAI flow. The merchant remains responsible for the order and is the merchant of record in that flow; the record is not the same as the payment provider’s transaction record.
AI checkout interface Passing checkout information and reflecting an order confirmation or decline in the documented flow. A displayed checkout result does not make the interface the holder of the final merchant order, fulfillment, or support record.
Payment service provider Processing the merchant’s payment and maintaining payment-side transaction information. The merchant uses its payment provider; delegated payment may pass a limited request or token rather than raw card details.
Card network or agent-payment layer Where implemented, agent-related payment tokens, authenticated instructions, commerce signals, and transaction outcome notifications described by Visa. These capabilities depend on implementation and market availability; Visa says Intelligent Commerce is in development and deployment.
Your saved purchase information Connecting the instruction, retailer confirmation, and payment record when you need to review or reconcile them. This is a practical recordkeeping approach, not a protocol-mandated consumer ledger.

What agent-specific payment signals add

Delegated payment in OpenAI’s documented flow

OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation describes delegated payment as an amount-limited, expiring request, with a payment-provider-issued token. The documentation identifies Stripe Shared Payment Token as the first compatible implementation and says more payment service providers are expected. This can constrain the payment request, but it does not combine the merchant’s order lifecycle and payment lifecycle into one universal record.

Visa agent identity and transaction signals

Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol describes signed agent recognition, consumer and device identity, and payment-container information for browsing and payment interactions. A merchant can ignore those signatures if it has not adopted the mechanism. Visa’s Intelligent Commerce overview describes commerce signals intended to support transaction tracking, dispute management, and validation against consumer intent, as well as transaction outcome notifications. Visa also says Intelligent Commerce is in development and deployment and may not be available in all markets.

How to compare tracking coverage before relying on it

Do not assess a setup only by whether it shows a checkout confirmation. Check which records and lifecycle events it can actually connect, and for which merchants, payment providers, and markets.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol guide describes an open protocol, while ChatGPT Instant Checkout is available to approved partners and involves merchant feed, checkout, payment integration, certification, and production-access requirements.

Availability depends on the merchant and market

OpenAI’s Instant Checkout announcement described U.S. ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro users purchasing from U.S. Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants described as coming soon; the initial flow supported single-item purchases. Treat those as announcement-time details, not a guarantee of present availability. OpenAI’s documentation also makes clear that checkout participation and integrations matter. Visa likewise cautions that Intelligent Commerce availability can vary by market. Check the current availability of the specific agent, retailer, and payment setup before assuming an order or agent-specific signal will be supported.
