To track a container arriving through Philadelphia, use the ocean carrier’s container, booking, or bill-of-lading number, identify the actual terminal, and check both carrier and terminal records. For cargo handled at Packer Avenue Marine Terminal (PAMT), the terminal-level check is Holt Connect’s Container Status function. Use Vessel Schedule for receive dates and an approximate arrival when the box is still manifested. Do not dispatch a truck until release, availability, holds, free time, appointment, chassis, gate and cutoff conditions are confirmed.
What you need before searching
Have the ocean carrier’s container number ready. A standard ocean container number normally combines an owner prefix, six digits and a check digit; copy it exactly as shown on the carrier’s paperwork. Also keep the booking number and bill of lading available. The carrier may use one of those references for vessel, booking or bill-of-lading searches even when the terminal search requires the container number.
- Container number: the primary reference for a box already assigned to a terminal record.
- Booking number: useful for finding the planned vessel, receive window and booking-level milestones.
- Bill of lading: useful for carrier tracking and, in some visibility systems, for locating multiple containers under one shipment.
- Master bill of lading: an optional reference accepted by some third-party visibility services.
Check spelling, letter-number transpositions and spaces before searching. A single incorrect character can return no result or, in a carrier system, a different shipment.

“The Port of Philadelphia” covers multiple marine facilities. Your tracking path depends on the terminal named by the carrier, booking confirmation or arrival notice. This guide focuses on Packer Avenue Marine Terminal, operated by Greenwich Terminals LLC. The operator lists the facility at 3301 S. Christopher Columbus Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19148. PhilaPort’s 2024 facility page describes six berths, 3,800 linear feet of berth space, a 45-foot depth at mean low water, highway and rail connections, and a computerized container-tracking system.

PAMT’s terminal/FIRMS code is C095. You may see that code on carrier, broker or visibility records. It helps distinguish Packer Avenue from another Philadelphia-area terminal, but it does not replace the shipment’s container number.
The official PAMT tracking workflow
- Open the carrier record. Sign in to the ocean carrier’s tracking page and search the container number. If the carrier offers booking or bill-of-lading search, run that as well. Record the named vessel, voyage, estimated arrival and destination terminal.
- Open Holt Connect. Holt Logistics provides Container Status, Booking Lookup and Vessel Schedule functions. Select Container Status for a box-specific result.
- Choose the search quantity. Holt’s instructions say to choose either a single container or multiple containers and enter the container number. For a single shipment, use the single-container option; for a drayage list, use the multiple-container option and verify every returned number.
- Run the search and read the top status line. The result indicates whether the container is manifested, in the yard or gated out. Treat that line as a location milestone, not as proof that cargo can be collected.
- Review Release Status. Look for customs, freight, agricultural, exam or other holds. A container can be physically in the yard while a release condition still blocks pickup.
- Review Terminal Service Status. This area can show terminal services, exams and related fees. Note whether an exam is planned, presented or complete and whether a payment or other action is required.
- Use Vessel Schedule when the box is not yet at the terminal. Search the vessel associated with the booking and review the receive dates. Holt’s instructions state that the schedule can provide an approximate arrival date while a container remains manifested.
- Confirm operational details immediately before dispatch. Ask the carrier, terminal or appointed trucker to verify release, availability, appointment requirements, chassis, free time, last free day, demurrage, current gate hours and any cutoff. These details can change after the status page was last refreshed.
How to interpret each Holt status

How to tell whether the container is actually available for pickup
Availability is a combination of physical location and permission to release. Use this checklist rather than relying on “in yard” alone:
- The carrier record shows the correct terminal and vessel discharge, not merely a booking or manifest.
- Holt shows the container in the yard.
- Release Status shows no unresolved customs, freight, agricultural or other hold.
- Any terminal-service exam is complete and associated charges are resolved.
- The ocean carrier has issued its freight release electronically or entered it into the terminal operating system.
- Demurrage, storage and other applicable charges are paid or otherwise cleared.
- The shipping line has confirmed free time and the last free day for this container.
- A truck appointment is available if PAMT requires one, and the driver has the required appointment, identification and reference numbers.
- A suitable chassis is confirmed, with no equipment restriction that would prevent the move.
- The gate is open under the current operating schedule and the move is before the applicable cutoff.
Request a fresh confirmation on the day of pickup. Vessel discharge, customs decisions, exam queues, appointments, gate hours and cutoff times can all change after an earlier status check.
Finding the vessel arrival and receive date
A booking or carrier record usually identifies the planned vessel and voyage. In Holt Connect, open Vessel Schedule and locate that vessel. The schedule’s receive dates show when the terminal expects to accept containers for the sailing. If the container is manifested but not yet arrived, the schedule can provide an approximate arrival date.

An approximate vessel date is not a guaranteed pickup date. Weather, port congestion, labor, vessel rotation, discharge sequencing, customs processing and terminal availability can move the actual milestone. Treat the vessel schedule as planning information and the container and release records as the basis for a truck decision.
Who can clear a hold or correct a status
Customs hold
Contact the customs broker handling the entry. Holt’s instructions say brokers should ensure that the entry is filed for port district 1101 with the correct piece count. If the issue is a pending examination rather than an entry filing problem, the broker should identify the exam status and next action.
Agricultural examination
For clarification of a CBP agricultural-exam clearance status, Holt lists CBPAIPHILA@cbp.dhs.gov. Keep the container number, bill of lading and broker contact information in the message so the agency can identify the shipment.
Freight hold
Contact the ocean carrier or shipping line. The carrier sends freight releases electronically or enters them into the terminal operating system. The terminal cannot substitute for a carrier release that has not been transmitted.

Free time, storage or demurrage
Check Demurrage Status when the information is available. If the free-time details are missing or unclear, contact the shipping line. Ask for the last free day that applies to this container, the time zone and the event that starts the charge clock.
Terminal-service exam or fee
Read Terminal Service Status for the exam stage and related fee instructions. Follow the terminal’s payment or resolution process before sending a driver. An exam marked planned or presented may still prevent release.
Gate, cutoff or facility question
Contact Greenwich Terminals/Packer Avenue at 215-551-2600. PhilaPort warns that extended gate hours can change and recommends contacting the terminal for the most accurate operating information. Do not rely on an old notice that lists extended hours.

For one container, check the carrier and Holt records directly. For many containers, a visibility service can reduce manual searches, but reconcile important decisions against the official records because third-party data can lag or omit a hold.

Common problems and practical fixes
No result for the container number
- Re-enter the number without an extra space and compare each character with the carrier document.
- Confirm that the box is actually destined for PAMT rather than another terminal.
- Ask the carrier whether the booking has been manifested and whether the terminal record has been created.
- If the carrier shows a change of destination, use the current terminal’s tracking workflow instead.
The container is manifested for several days
Use Vessel Schedule to review the receive date and approximate arrival. Ask the carrier whether the vessel’s ETA or terminal rotation changed. Do not dispatch until the container changes to an actionable terminal status and release conditions are confirmed.
The container is in yard but cannot be picked up
Read Release Status and Terminal Service Status, then identify the responsible party. Customs, agricultural, freight, exam, demurrage, appointment and chassis issues are separate from physical location. Resolve the specific hold instead of repeatedly refreshing the location page.
Different systems show different dates
Determine what each date represents: vessel ETA, terminal receive date, discharge, availability, last free day or appointment cutoff. Those are different events. Ask the carrier or terminal to confirm which event controls the truck move and when the record was last updated.

A truck arrives and the gate is closed
Call 215-551-2600 before rescheduling. Gate hours and extended hours may change, and a historical schedule is not a current operating instruction. Confirm appointment windows, cutoffs and any terminal-specific restrictions for the day of the move.

A repeatable tracking routine for dispatch teams
- Create one record per container with the container number, booking, bill of lading, vessel, voyage, terminal and carrier contact.
- Check the carrier portal when the vessel is approaching and record the latest ETA and destination terminal.
- Check Holt Connect for the container’s terminal status and save the release and terminal-service results.
- For manifested containers, check Vessel Schedule and update the expected receive or arrival date.
- When the box is in yard, verify every release, exam, fee, free-time and appointment condition before assigning a truck.
- On dispatch day, call or verify the terminal for current gate hours, cutoff and chassis conditions.
- After the move, confirm the status changes to gated out and retain the interchange or delivery paperwork.
This separation of vessel, terminal, release and gate milestones prevents a common error: treating an estimated arrival or an in-yard scan as permission to collect cargo.
What the terminal’s published facts mean for tracking
PAMT’s six berths, rail connections and immediate highway access explain why one shipment can show separate vessel, yard, rail and truck milestones. A vessel can discharge while rail transfer, customs processing or a truck appointment remains outstanding. The facility’s published 45-foot depth at mean low water and 3,800 linear feet of berth space are facility characteristics from PhilaPort’s 2024 page, not a promise about a particular vessel’s arrival time or a container’s availability.
Before you send the truck
- Correct container and terminal confirmed.
- Carrier release confirmed.
- Holt status checked recently.
- Customs and agricultural holds cleared.
- Terminal-service exam and charges resolved.
- Free time and last free day confirmed with the shipping line.
- Appointment, chassis and driver requirements confirmed.
- Gate hours and cutoff checked with the terminal.
If any item is unknown, pause dispatch and contact the party that controls it. A current authoritative answer is cheaper than a rejected truck, a missed cutoff or avoidable demurrage.
