Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo tether an iPhone to a laptop, turn on Personal Hotspot and connect using Wi-Fi, a USB cable, or Bluetooth. Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular data—not a Wi-Fi connection the iPhone is already using—and availability, fees, and device limits depend on your carrier and plan.
Before you connect
- Make sure Cellular Data is on and your carrier plan includes Personal Hotspot. It is not available on every plan, and extra charges or device limits may apply. If the hotspot setting is missing while cellular data is enabled, ask your carrier whether it supports the feature.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot. Depending on your iOS setup, the option may be under Settings > Cellular. Turn on Allow Others to Join when connecting a laptop that does not use the same Apple Account or eligible Family Sharing setup.
- Keep the devices close. Apple’s general setup guidance recommends Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and places the devices within 10 metres (30 feet).
- Check your cellular plan and monitor usage at Settings > Cellular. Hotspot traffic uses mobile data, so your plan’s limits and charges still apply.
Apple’s Personal Hotspot guide notes that an iPhone cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network and then share that Wi-Fi connection with another device.
Choose a connection method
| Method | What you need | Setup summary |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | The iPhone hotspot name and password; eligible Apple devices may join without entering a password. | Select the iPhone’s network in the laptop’s Wi-Fi settings. |
| USB | A data-capable cable compatible with both devices; Windows also needs Apple Devices or iTunes installed. | Connect the cable and approve trust or accessory prompts if shown. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth enabled on both devices. | Pair or select the iPhone; Windows setup follows the PC maker’s Bluetooth-network instructions. |
Apple’s guidance does not establish a universal speed, reliability, or battery-life winner among these methods. Wi-Fi is a straightforward wireless option; USB provides a wired connection; Bluetooth requires pairing and network setup.
Connect over Wi-Fi
- On the iPhone, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot (or the Personal Hotspot setting under Cellular) and turn on Allow Others to Join.
- On the laptop, open Wi-Fi settings and choose the network named for the iPhone. The hotspot name matches the iPhone’s device name.
- When prompted, enter the password shown in Settings > Personal Hotspot. Apple devices using the same Apple Account may connect without a password. Eligible Apple devices can also use Instant Hotspot or Auto-Join; see Apple’s Instant Hotspot instructions.
If the iPhone’s network does not appear, check that Personal Hotspot is on and bring the devices closer together. If a connection attempt fails, confirm that you selected the iPhone’s device name and recheck the password in Personal Hotspot settings.

On a Mac where USB tethering does not work, Apple recommends updating macOS, confirming the iPhone is trusted and appears in Finder or iTunes, then checking System Settings > Network for the iPhone USB service. If it is listed but inactive, make the service active. Apple’s Personal Hotspot troubleshooting guide provides additional checks.
To disconnect, unplug the cable or turn off Allow Others to Join. A computer may reconnect to the hotspot when the iPhone is plugged in for charging if Personal Hotspot remains enabled.
