To test an Xbox connection, open the console’s Network settings and run its network and multiplayer checks; then review detailed network statistics if available. A packet-loss reading can show that packets are not reaching their destination, but it cannot tell you by itself whether the cause is Wi-Fi, your router, your internet provider, or a game service. Compare results across connection types and services before deciding where to seek help.
Run the Xbox connection checks
On Xbox One, Microsoft’s legacy instructions give this path: press the Xbox button to open the guide, then go to Settings → All settings → Network → Network settings. From the troubleshooting panel, run Test network connection and Test multiplayer connection, then open Detailed network statistics if available. These are Xbox One menu labels from an older Microsoft Q&A page; the exact path and labels may differ on Xbox Series X|S or with newer console software. [Microsoft Q&A]
Read the tests as separate checks: a network test concerns the console’s connection, while the multiplayer test checks its ability to use multiplayer networking. Detailed statistics may show packet loss, latency, and wireless signal strength, depending on the console and software. Save or note any result that appears with an error.
Record a baseline before changing anything
For each run, write down the displayed packet-loss figure and latency, whether the console is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the time, the game or service in use, and any error text. Repeat the test at another time if the problem comes and goes. One result is a snapshot; repeated results help show whether the issue is persistent, intermittent, or tied to a particular time or activity.

What a packet-loss result can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft’s Windows Client guidance defines packet loss as a packet failing to reach its intended destination and notes that some loss does not necessarily cause higher-level networking problems. That guidance describes networking concepts for Windows clients, not an Xbox-specific pass/fail rule. A loss percentage from an end-user test is a clue that packets were missed along the tested path; it does not identify the faulty device or network hop. [Microsoft Learn: Diagnose Packet Loss – Windows Client]
Causes can be local or farther along the route. Microsoft’s Windows documentation lists possibilities such as firewall or policy drops, resource pressure, routing or neighbor-resolution problems, congestion, unreachable endpoints, and MTU issues. These are examples of general networking causes, not findings about your Xbox or proof that any one cause applies. [Microsoft Learn: Diagnose Packet Loss – Windows Client]

Do not treat 5% as a current Xbox limit
An old Microsoft Q&A answer for an Xbox One troubleshooting scenario says a reading above 5 percent may warrant troubleshooting. It is dated advice, not a current, universal Xbox standard or a guaranteed failure threshold; a lower reading does not guarantee that every game or service will work. [Microsoft Q&A]
Numbers in Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation are for a different purpose: its Xbox One development-kit profiles simulate packet loss at 1% for “minimum” and “average” conditions and 0.5% for “excellent” conditions. Those are developer test settings, not consumer measurements or household connection targets. [Microsoft Learn: Xbox network stress]

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If the console is on Wi-Fi and a direct connection is practical, connect it to the router with Ethernet and rerun the same checks under otherwise similar conditions. Compare the results and whether the game symptoms change. A difference can make Wi-Fi conditions worth investigating; it does not prove the wireless network was the only cause, nor does a cable guarantee a fix. The legacy Xbox instructions also refer to wireless signal strength in detailed statistics, which may add context when available. [Microsoft Q&A]
Change one condition at a time: keep the game, time window, and test as similar as possible when comparing Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Otherwise, several simultaneous changes can make the result difficult to interpret. No particular Ethernet cable category has been established here as a way to reduce packet loss.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Use the pattern to narrow down where to look
| What you observe | What it suggests | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Problems on Wi-Fi improve or disappear on Ethernet | Wireless conditions may be contributing, but the comparison alone does not identify a specific cause. | Repeat the comparison and record signal strength if the console reports it. |
| The same problem appears on Wi-Fi and Ethernet | The issue may be elsewhere in the home network, on the internet path, or with a service; the test does not locate it. | Check whether other devices or multiple games are affected and share the repeated results with your network administrator or ISP as appropriate. |
| Only one game or partner service is affected | The issue may be specific to that game or service rather than a general Xbox connection problem. | Check that service’s own support information and report the game, time, and error. Microsoft certification guidance distinguishes partner-service outages from Xbox network issues. [Microsoft Learn: XR-074] |
| Results vary between tests or times | The issue may be intermittent or time-dependent; a single test cannot establish a lasting condition. | Keep timestamps and repeat the same checks when symptoms recur. |
These comparisons narrow the scope but do not prove that a particular router, ISP, or service is responsible. If you contact support, provide the exact readings, time and date, connection type, affected games or services, and any displayed error rather than only saying that the connection is lagging.
