If an industrial fire may have affected your water, stop using the tap for drinking and food preparation until your water utility or health department says it is safe. Use bottled water or another confirmed-safe source, follow the local advisory exactly, and do not try to make suspected fuel or toxic-chemical contamination safe by boiling, disinfecting or flushing pipes on your own.

The correct test depends on whether your home is on a public water system or a private well, which chemicals burned, how firefighting runoff moved, and how the sample is collected. An incident-specific panel from an accredited drinking-water laboratory is appropriate; a generic home kit cannot rule out an unknown industrial contaminant.

What to do before testing

Testing is not a substitute for an official emergency decision. First check the water utility, county or state health department, and emergency-management notices. The utility must state whether to avoid drinking, cooking, bathing, laundry, brushing teeth, making ice or all water uses, and when restrictions are lifted. If you suspect contamination but no notice has been issued, call the utility and report the fire, your address and any unusual odor, color or taste.

  • Use bottled water or another source confirmed safe by authorities for every use covered by the advisory.
  • Do not boil or disinfect suspected chemical contamination. Boiling can remove neither fuel nor many toxic chemicals and can concentrate some contaminants as water evaporates.
  • Do not flush household plumbing, run appliances, replace filters or resume normal use unless the utility or health department gives a written or recorded instruction.
  • Keep children, pregnant people, older adults and anyone with a medical condition away from potentially contaminated water until officials clear it.

CDC gives the same warning in its 2024 emergency-water guidance: “You cannot make water containing fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive materials safe by boiling or disinfecting it.”

Public tap water and private wells require different testing decisions

Homes on a public water system

The water utility and responding agencies are responsible for tracing the incident, identifying pathways into the distribution system, collecting representative samples and deciding when restrictions can be lifted. Their samples are taken at multiple locations and interpreted with system operating data, so a single kitchen-tap sample cannot replace that investigation.

Ask the utility these questions:

  • Is my address inside the advisory or a pressure, intake or service-area zone that could be affected?
  • Which uses are prohibited: drinking only, cooking and brushing teeth, bathing, or all uses?
  • What contaminants are being investigated, and which laboratory methods are being used?
  • Has the system sampled source water, treatment-plant water and neighborhood taps?
  • What event or test result will end the advisory, and will residents receive written clearance?

If the utility asks residents to provide samples, use only its bottles and instructions. A privately ordered sample can be useful for documentation, but it does not authorize you to ignore an advisory or declare the public system safe.

Homes with private wells

A well owner must contact the local or state health department and arrange a fire-specific assessment with a certified environmental drinking-water laboratory. Tell both organizations the fire location, date, burned materials if known, firefighting foams or fuels used, visible runoff, flooding, well depth and construction, and whether the wellhead or electrical equipment was damaged.

Do not assume that an intact well casing protected the water. Runoff can enter through a damaged cap, cracked casing, flooded wellhead, nearby soil, an improperly sealed annulus or a damaged pressure system. The health department may require an inspection before sampling and may identify additional analytes based on the incident inventory.

Choose analytes from the fire and runoff pathway

There is no universal “chemical-fire panel.” The laboratory and health department should match analytes and methods to the materials that burned, the suppression agents used, the direction of runoff, the geology and the water source. A broad package ordered without that information can miss the important compound, waste money on irrelevant tests or use containers that cannot preserve volatile chemicals.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

VOCs can migrate from fuels, solvents, plastics and other industrial materials. CDC post-fire well guidance identifies VOC testing as a potential priority and points to broad EPA Methods 502.2 or 524.2 coverage. The exact compound list, detection limits and method must be confirmed with the laboratory; “VOCs” is not a single analyte.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)

SVOCs can come from combustion products, oils, resins, pesticides and other materials. They generally require different bottles, extraction procedures and holding times from VOCs. Ask whether the laboratory’s SVOC method includes the compounds associated with the facility and fire debris rather than accepting an unspecified “organics” add-on.

Metals

CDC specifically mentions lead, copper, zinc and iron for post-fire well investigations. Other metals may be appropriate when the burned inventory, firefighting runoff or local geology suggests them. The laboratory must state whether it is testing dissolved, total or recoverable metal; those results answer different questions.

Other incident-specific parameters

The health department may add analytes for a known product, fuel additive, pesticide, industrial feedstock or firefighting chemical. It may also request field measurements or separate samples for source water, sediment or soil. Do not infer that a negative VOC and metals result excludes every possible chemical from a complex fire.

Build a testing plan with the health department and laboratory

  1. Document the event. Record the fire date and time, facility or material involved, wind and rainfall, visible runoff, odors, changes in water pressure or appearance, and when your well or tap was last used.
  2. Identify the water source. Note the public utility name or well location, well depth and age, treatment equipment, storage tanks, recent repairs and any flooding or loss of power.
  3. Ask for the analyte list and methods in writing. Confirm VOC, SVOC and metal coverage, reporting limits, container types, preservatives, sample volumes, holding times and expected turnaround.
  4. Confirm laboratory credentials. Use a laboratory certified or accredited for drinking-water analysis in your jurisdiction and for the specific methods required. Accreditation for one test does not prove competence for every analyte.
  5. Plan locations and timing. The health department may request a wellhead or source sample, a first-draw household sample, a flushed sample, or repeat samples after remediation. Follow the requested location and timing exactly.

Ask whether the laboratory supplies a chain-of-custody form and field blanks. A field blank can reveal contamination introduced during transport or handling; it is not interchangeable with a household tap sample.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collect a sample without changing the result

Use bottles supplied or explicitly approved by the laboratory. Different analyses require different glass or plastic containers, preservatives and volumes. Never pour water from one bottle into another unless the laboratory instructs you to do so.

Prepare the faucet

  1. Choose a cold-water tap that the laboratory or health department approves. Do not use a hose bib, hot-water tap, filtered dispenser or appliance line unless specifically requested.
  2. Remove the aerator, screen, hose, filter or other attachment. These can trap chemicals or release metals and make the sample unrepresentative.
  3. Keep the bottle, cap and preservative clean. Do not rinse a laboratory-prepared bottle unless the instructions explicitly allow it.

Flush and fill

  1. Open the cold tap and flush until the water temperature stabilizes, often after several minutes. The laboratory may instead require a first-draw sample; follow its written instruction rather than choosing a procedure yourself.
  2. Reduce the flow to a smooth stream that will not splash. Avoid touching the bottle rim, cap interior or inside of the neck.
  3. Fill each container to the marked level. VOC vials must be filled completely, with no bubbles or headspace. If a bubble remains after capping, do not reopen or top it off; contact the laboratory for a replacement vial.
  4. Use the laboratory’s order for bottles and preservatives. VOC, SVOC and metals containers are not interchangeable, and some preservatives can make another analysis invalid.

Preserve and transport

  1. Cap containers immediately, check for leaks and label them with the requested sample ID, date and time.
  2. Keep samples cold in the laboratory-approved cooler and packing material. Do not freeze unless instructed.
  3. Deliver them within the stated holding time. A sample that arrives late can be rejected even if the collection itself was careful.
  4. Complete chain-of-custody records, including everyone who handled the cooler, the collection time, requested analyses and any deviations.

If a bottle is dropped, a preservative is missing, a seal breaks or the sample warms beyond the instructions, tell the laboratory before analysis. The lab may require recollection rather than issuing a misleading result.

Why a home water-testing kit cannot clear your tap

Consumer strips and broad kits can screen selected parameters such as pH, hardness, chlorine, nitrate or lead. They are useful for routine household monitoring when the question and method match, but they do not demonstrate that an unknown industrial-fire chemical is absent.

Fire-related VOC, SVOC and metals work depends on method-specific containers, preservatives, blanks, calibrated instruments, reporting limits and documented custody. A strip that shows normal pH or chlorine says nothing about many solvents, fuel components or combustion products. Even a kit marketed for “heavy metals” may use a detection limit too high for a health-based decision or may not distinguish dissolved from particulate metal.

Do not use a negative home-kit result to end bottled-water precautions, contradict an official advisory or decide that a private well is safe. If you use a kit for personal information, record the brand, lot, date, sample location and instructions, then give those details to the health department without treating the result as clearance.

Home treatment, filters and flushing: what not to assume

Boiling and routine disinfection target microbes, not fuel or toxic chemicals. Activated-carbon filters, reverse-osmosis units and other devices remove only the contaminants for which they are designed and maintained; an ordinary pitcher filter is not a validated response to an industrial fire. Filters can also become contaminated and release chemicals later.

Do not install treatment equipment before the health department identifies the contaminant and confirms that the device, cartridge type, contact time and maintenance schedule are appropriate. Do not flush a well or household plumbing to “clear” the problem. Flushing can spread contamination through drains, expose occupants and move chemicals into the environment; the utility or health department must specify when, where and how to flush.

Understand what a laboratory report does—and does not—say

A result applies only to the analytes tested, the sampled location, the collection conditions and the laboratory method. “Not detected” means the chemical was below that method’s reporting limit in that bottle; it does not mean the water contains none of it, nor does it address chemicals that were not included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review each report for:

  • Analyte name and chemical form, including dissolved versus total metal where applicable.
  • Method number, reporting limit, units and any data qualifiers.
  • Collection date, time and location, plus whether the sample was first-draw or flushed.
  • Holding-time compliance, preservation notes and chain-of-custody exceptions.
  • Results for blanks, duplicates or laboratory-control samples when supplied.

Ask the laboratory or health department to interpret detections against the applicable health standard or emergency action level. Do not compare a household result with an unrelated standard from another jurisdiction or with a kit’s color chart.

What happens when contamination is detected

Public system

The utility and health department determine the response. It may include isolating a section, removing contaminated water, repairing equipment, treating or replacing infrastructure, flushing under controlled conditions and collecting repeat samples. Only the responsible authority can announce that restrictions are lifted.

Private well

Follow the health department’s remediation plan. It may require repairing the wellhead, removing contaminated equipment, pumping or disposing of water under supervision, installing a specified treatment system, and repeat sampling after emergency work. CDC recommends follow-up testing and continued monitoring when conditions warrant. Chemical contamination is not corrected by boiling or routine disinfection.

Keep every report, photograph, invoice, chain-of-custody form and official notice. These records help the health department evaluate changes over time and establish which sample supports final clearance.

How the main testing options compare

Option Who controls it What it can establish Key limitations
Utility and agency sampling Public water utility and responding agencies System-wide characterization, advisory decisions and official clearance Residents may not receive every raw result; timing and locations are set by the response team
Private-well incident panel Well owner in coordination with the health department and certified laboratory Results for incident-selected VOCs, SVOCs, metals and other analytes at specified locations One sample covers only its analytes, location and collection conditions; repeat testing may be required
Consumer screening kit Home user Limited screening of the parameters listed in the kit instructions Cannot rule out an unknown industrial-fire chemical or replace accredited methods and chain-of-custody
Incident-specific laboratory panel Accredited laboratory using a health-department-approved plan Method-based results with stated reporting limits and preservation controls Requires correct bottles, timing, shipping and a chemical list tailored to the fire

When there is no advisory, but you still notice a problem

Call the utility or health department promptly if water develops a petroleum, solvent, smoky or unusual chemical odor; changes color; leaves an oily film; or causes irritation. Do not taste the water to check it. Explain whether the change occurs at every tap, only hot water, only after the water sits, or only at one fixture; this information helps distinguish a building plumbing issue from a source or distribution problem.

If anyone may have swallowed or inhaled chemical-contaminated water, contact emergency medical services or a poison-information service and identify the fire and suspected materials. Do not induce vomiting or give home remedies unless a medical professional instructs you.

A practical checklist for a private-well owner

  • Save the advisory or incident notice and write down when you stopped using the well.
  • Call the health department before choosing a laboratory or analyte list.
  • Describe the burned materials, runoff, well construction and any damage.
  • Use laboratory-supplied bottles and follow the requested first-draw or flushed procedure.
  • Request VOC, SVOC and metals coverage only as matched to the incident; confirm EPA Method 502.2 or 524.2 coverage when VOC testing is indicated.
  • Verify accreditation, reporting limits, preservatives, holding times, shipping temperature and chain-of-custody.
  • Keep samples cold and deliver them on time.
  • Wait for health-department interpretation and written clearance before resuming restricted uses.
  • Complete follow-up samples after remediation and keep monitoring if officials recommend it.

The safest decision rule

For a public tap, the utility’s advisory and clearance control your water use. For a private well, the health department’s incident-specific plan and an accredited laboratory’s properly collected results control the decision. Until those authorities identify the relevant chemicals and confirm safe use, bottled water is the safer choice; neither boiling nor a generic home kit can establish that an industrial-fire contaminant is absent.
