To check whether stock watchlist alerts are configured correctly, verify the alert rule and the delivery channel separately. Confirm the security is on the relevant watchlist, set or inspect its trigger, enable the notification method you want, and check the receiving device’s permissions. These checks confirm configuration—not guaranteed delivery speed.

What to check before testing a watchlist alert

A watchlist alert has several independent parts: the security being monitored, the condition that should trigger an alert, the channel used to send it, and the permissions that let the app or browser display it. A failure at any one of those points can keep a notification from reaching you.

  • Watchlist membership: Check that the security is on the list the alert feature uses. Coinbase says its price alerts are sent only for assets added to a watchlist; Robinhood describes alerts for assets watched or held. Rules vary by platform.
  • Alert rule: Confirm the alert is enabled and check its trigger, such as a price moving above or below a threshold. Where offered, check frequency settings too.
  • Notification channel: Enable the intended option—such as push or email—in the provider’s preferences. Available channels can vary by provider and alert category.
  • Device permission: Allow notifications for the app. For browser alerts, check both browser and operating-system permissions. Sound, display style, Focus or quiet-mode settings may also affect what you notice.

How to validate an alert configuration

Use one security and one clear threshold-based rule at a time. This checklist is a practical way to inspect settings; it is not a controlled test of any provider’s notification performance.

  1. Choose a security already on the relevant watchlist. Open the broker’s watchlist and verify the security is present.
  2. Inspect or create one alert. Check that it is enabled, note whether the trigger is above or below a price, and record the threshold. If the alert uses a frequency setting, note that as well.
  3. Choose the notification channel. In the provider’s notification preferences, enable the desired option, such as push or email. Keep track of the provider, app or platform, alert category, and channel; settings may differ between categories.
  4. Check permissions on the receiving device. Allow app notifications in the device settings. For a browser alert, allow notifications in both the browser and the operating system. Also check whether sound, alert style, Focus, or quiet mode could hide or silence it. Exact menu paths depend on the device and are not specified consistently by the providers.
  5. Observe a qualifying trigger. If the threshold is reached, record the event and when and where the notification appears. If comparing two channels, compare them against the same event and configuration; that is an individual observation, not a provider-wide reliability result.
  6. If nothing appears, recheck each layer. Verify the rule, watchlist membership, channel toggle, device or browser permissions, and the alert’s current state or quote in the brokerage app. Service availability can also affect delivery.

What provider help pages say about alerts

The following examples show why it is important to check the settings for the particular service. They describe documented features, not a ranking of delivery speed or reliability.

Provider Documented alert or setting details Important qualification
Coinbase Its help page describes custom alerts above or below a target, frequency options for predetermined alerts, and push, in-app, and/or email notifications. Coinbase says only watchlisted assets send price alerts. Alerts notify users that a price was reached; they do not place orders and are not investment advice. This is a crypto-platform example, not a universal stock-broker rule.
Robinhood Its support pages describe watchlist price-movement settings, custom price alerts, and push preferences for categories including stock price movements and order status. Robinhood says it cannot always guarantee push delivery; service availability and app and phone settings affect notifications.
Fidelity Its help page describes price triggers for watchlist securities and delivery devices. The page lists legacy devices and channels, so verify the current options in Fidelity’s settings.
TD Direct Investing An indexed support answer describes real-time price and volume alerts for stocks and ETFs, with phone push or email preferences. Check the current TD app for availability and exact steps.
Kraken Its support page identifies operating-system and browser permission settings for watchlist notifications. App or website configuration alone may not be enough to enable delivery on a device.
Charles Schwab Its guide says alerts can be created from security quote details, watchlists, or other areas of the app, and edited by changing trigger parameters. Refer to Schwab’s current guide and app for the available alert options.

Why “real-time” does not mean guaranteed instant delivery

“Real-time” may describe an alert feature, but it is not evidence of a guaranteed arrival time. Robinhood expressly says push notification delivery is not always guaranteed. Device permissions, app and phone settings, and service availability can affect whether a notification appears.

The provider materials cited here do not give comparable measured delivery times or success rates for stock watchlist alerts. They therefore do not establish that one service sends alerts faster or more reliably than another. A delay alone also does not identify its cause.

A price alert is not an order

A price alert tells you that a configured condition has been reached; it should not be treated as a dependable way to place a trade. Coinbase explicitly says its price alerts do not place orders. Robinhood describes alerts as informational and cautions that push delivery cannot always be guaranteed. If you need to act on a market event, check the brokerage account directly rather than relying on an alert as an order mechanism.
