Use an authenticated test state to get the browser onto the protected page, then assert that the page matches an approved screenshot. In Playwright, save and reuse browser storage state and compare with the built-in toHaveScreenshot(). In Cypress, drive the app to a logged-in state and use cy.screenshot() for capture; add a visual-testing integration for baseline comparison.
Separate login setup from visual regression
Authentication and screenshot comparison solve different problems. Authentication establishes the state the test needs; the visual assertion detects rendering changes once the page is there. Add a functional assertion that proves the intended signed-in content is visible before capturing it. Otherwise, a screenshot could faithfully record a login page, expired session, or access error instead of the page under test.
Use a dedicated test environment and test account. A shared account is workable when parallel tests do not interfere with one another’s server-side data. If tests mutate data that other tests read, isolate that data or use separate accounts to avoid race conditions.
Playwright: save authenticated state and compare screenshots
Playwright recommends creating an authenticated browser state during setup and loading it into later tests. Its documentation uses a local playwright/.auth directory as an example. Add that directory to .gitignore: state files can contain cookies and headers that let someone impersonate the account. See Playwright authentication.

1. Create a setup project
The following is a minimal pattern to adapt to your app. It assumes the login form has accessible labels and that the protected page exposes a reliable signed-in heading; replace selectors and routes with your application’s. Store credentials in environment variables rather than source code.
// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
projects: [
{
name: 'setup',
testMatch: /auth.setup.ts/,
},
{
name: 'chromium',
use: {
...devices['Desktop Chrome'],
storageState: 'playwright/.auth/user.json',
},
dependencies: ['setup'],
},
],
});
Create the state file in the setup test, before regular tests run:
// tests/auth.setup.ts
import { test as setup, expect } from '@playwright/test';
import fs from 'node:fs';
const authFile = 'playwright/.auth/user.json';
setup('sign in and save state', async ({ page }) => {
const email = process.env.TEST_USER_EMAIL;
const password = process.env.TEST_USER_PASSWORD;
if (!email || !password) throw new Error('Set TEST_USER_EMAIL and TEST_USER_PASSWORD');
await page.goto('https://example.test/login');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill(email);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(password);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account overview' })).toBeVisible();
fs.mkdirSync('playwright/.auth', { recursive: true });
await page.context().storageState({ path: authFile });
});
Ignore the auth directory in Git:
# .gitignore
playwright/.auth/
2. Navigate to the protected route and assert the checkpoint
Tests configured with the saved state can go directly to the route of interest. First verify the authenticated page is ready; then take a named screenshot. On its first run, toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image. Later runs compare against it, and Playwright waits for consecutive screenshots to match before saving, reducing captures made during ongoing rendering. See Playwright visual comparisons.

test('account overview matches its approved appearance', async ({ page }) => {

await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account overview' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-overview.png');
});
Run the setup and test project through Playwright Test as usual. When intentionally establishing or changing reference screenshots, use Playwright’s documented snapshot-update workflow, inspect the generated differences, and commit only approved references. Keep baseline generation and comparison in the same browser and operating-system environment where possible; Playwright notes that OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect pixels.

Cypress: capture after login, add a comparison layer
Cypress can capture screenshots with cy.screenshot() and automatically capture screenshots when tests fail in cypress run. Capture alone is not a baseline comparison: use a visual-testing plugin or integration for the compare-and-review workflow. Cypress documents Percy as one integration example. The Cypress visual testing guide describes the workflow and recommends taking a snapshot only after confirming the page is done changing: Visual testing in Cypress. For capture behavior, see Capture screenshots and videos in Cypress.
// cypress/e2e/account.cy.js
it('captures the signed-in account overview', () => {
cy.visit('/login');
cy.get('[name="email"]').type(Cypress.env('TEST_USER_EMAIL'));
cy.get('[name="password"]').type(Cypress.env('TEST_USER_PASSWORD'), { log: false });
cy.contains('button', 'Sign in').click();
cy.get('[data-testid="account-overview"]').should('be.visible');
cy.screenshot('account-overview');
});
Adapt the selectors, credential configuration, and login path to your app. If using a visual integration, follow its instructions to submit the captured state, compare it with an approved baseline, and review the diff. Cypress’s guidance on visual testing emphasizes confirming the page has stopped changing before taking the snapshot.

Make the checkpoint deterministic
A screenshot test is useful only when unrelated variation is kept under control. Wait for meaningful application state, not an arbitrary sleep. Assert that the relevant page content or component is visible after data loads. If the page depends on changing API data, stub responses with repeatable fixtures when appropriate, and control dates and test records so expected content does not drift between runs.
- Stabilize the rendering environment. Fix viewport, browser, operating system, fonts, and relevant browser settings; create and compare baselines in the same CI environment where possible.
- Let the page settle. Wait for the functional state being tested, and avoid snapshots during transitions or animations. Disable animations or wait for them to finish when they are not part of the behavior being checked.
- Contain third-party volatility. Prefer controlling a dependency. If a small ad, embedded media area, or third-party widget cannot be made deterministic, mask or hide that narrow region rather than loosening the threshold for the entire image.
- Choose a meaningful scope. Use an element-level screenshot when the component is the subject; use a full-page screenshot when page-wide layout relationships matter. Keep checkpoints focused on important pages and states.
- Review, then update. Inspect the diff before accepting a design change as the new reference. An unreviewed baseline update can turn a real regression into the expected image.
Visual diffs do not assess text contrast or other accessibility requirements. Run accessibility checks separately rather than treating a matching screenshot as proof of accessibility.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The protected page redirects to login. The state may not have been saved, may have expired, or may not apply to the target domain. Re-run setup, check the final URL and signed-in assertion, and confirm the project loads the intended state file.
- Credentials are missing in CI. Configure the test account credentials as CI secrets or environment variables. Fail setup clearly when they are absent; do not add credentials to source code.
- A screenshot differs on every run. Check for unsettled API data, changing dates, animations, font loading, third-party content, viewport mismatch, and browser or OS differences. Stabilize the cause before changing comparison tolerance.
- The diff is large after a browser or runner update. Verify that the baseline and comparison use the same browser and environment. If the change is intentional, review the diff and regenerate references in the canonical environment.
- Cypress produces an image but no visual failure. That is expected from capture alone. Add and configure a visual comparison integration;
cy.screenshot()does not itself compare the result to a baseline. - Parallel tests interfere with account data. Use independent test data or separate accounts when tests mutate shared server-side state.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-call screenshot rather than a login-aware regression test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. The API captures a URL; it does not replace your test framework’s authenticated-state setup or baseline assertion. Its pre-capture cleanup accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, with each step optional. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
cURL example, using the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.test/account -o shot.webp
Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. The endpoint can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

FAQ
Should I commit Playwright’s authentication state file?
No. It can contain cookies or headers that enable account impersonation. Keep the auth directory out of the repository and generate the state in setup.
Does a matching screenshot prove the page is accessible?
No. A visual match does not evaluate accessibility properties such as text contrast; run accessibility checks separately.
