For a quick layout check, use Safari Responsive Design Mode on a Mac. To see how a page actually renders in iPhone Safari or Chrome, test it in the iOS Simulator or on an iPhone. You can inspect Safari from a Mac’s Develop menu; Chrome on iPhone has a documented remote-inspection route through that same menu, subject to version requirements.
Choose the right kind of iPhone screenshot test
A desktop preview, an emulated mobile browser, and a browser running on iOS answer different questions. Start with the fastest method that can reproduce the issue, then move to a Simulator or physical phone when it may depend on iOS behavior or browser UI.

|---|---|---|---|
| Safari Responsive Design Mode on Mac | Quick responsive layout exploration | How layout and media queries change at chosen widths, heights, and pixel ratios | A Mac preview is not a complete iOS device context. |
| iOS Simulator | Checking iOS-specific rendering without a physical phone | Device-aware behavior, including viewport-meta effects, text sizing, and double-tap zoom | It is a simulator, not a particular physical device. |
| Physical iPhone with Safari | Verifying and debugging Safari on an actual device | The page as it runs on that device, with remote inspection from a Mac | Requires an iPhone and connection setup. |
| Physical iPhone with Chrome | Checking the Chrome app context on iPhone | The Chrome page can be inspected remotely through Safari Web Inspector | Google’s documented workflow has minimum iOS and Chrome versions. |
| Playwright device emulation | Repeatable automated checks | Configurable viewport, device scale factor, touch support, user agent, and related settings | Its output is emulated, not proof of a physical iPhone result. |

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
-
Set representative viewport width and height values and check more than one pixel ratio. Do not rely on a single device preset if the problem occurs at a breakpoint between presets.
-
Look for horizontal overflow, clipped navigation, unexpected wrapping, and layout changes as dimensions change. Apple’s documentation describes Responsive Design Mode as a way to test media queries and dynamic styles: Responsive Design Mode.
Use this as a fast way to find responsive CSS problems, not as evidence that an iPhone will render the page identically. Apple recommends Simulator or a real device for iOS-specific experience checks; WebKit also describes entering custom viewport dimensions and opening a page in Simulator: WebKit features in Safari 17.
Test and inspect the page in iPhone Safari
Use the iOS Simulator when you do not have a phone at hand
The Simulator is included with Xcode. It can help check device-specific behavior such as viewport-meta effects, rendered text sizing, double-tap zoom, and Home Screen web apps. A booted Simulator can also appear in Safari on Mac’s Develop menu for inspection. Apple’s guidance is at Inspecting iOS.

-
In Safari on the Mac, open Develop, choose the connected iPhone, and select the page. The Web Inspector attaches to the page running on the phone.
Apple’s current setup guidance for inspecting connected devices and booted simulators is documented at Inspecting iOS. Use an actual phone if the issue depends on a specific device, iOS release, browser state, or interaction that the Simulator does not resolve.
Test and inspect the page in iPhone Chrome
Google’s Chrome for Developers instructions, published and updated on July 18, 2023, describe remote Web Inspector debugging for iOS 16.4 or later and Chrome 115 or later. Treat those as the requirements stated in that article, not a guarantee that every current release retains identical menus; if the steps fail, check Google’s latest Chrome guidance. See Debugging Chrome on iOS.
-
On the iPhone, open Chrome and go to Settings > Content Settings. Enable Web Inspector, then relaunch Chrome.

Use the attached Web Inspector to examine the page running in Chrome’s current iPhone web view.
This checks Chrome running on iPhone. Desktop Chrome’s device emulation is a separate, useful workflow, but does not establish what the Chrome app on an iPhone displays.
Make Safari and Chrome captures comparable
A visual comparison is useful only if you can tell what was captured and reproduce the relevant state. Record these details alongside each screenshot:

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
- Device and software: iPhone model, iOS version, browser name, and browser version.
- View: orientation and whether the image captures the visible viewport or a longer page.
- Page state: URL, scroll position, signed-in or other relevant state, and any interaction already performed.
- Timing and content: whether fonts and images finished loading, and whether consent prompts, animation, or timestamps changed between captures.
Keep page content and state as stable as practical before comparing screenshots. A static image alone may not reveal a defect triggered by scrolling, orientation changes, a form keyboard, or browser chrome changing as the page moves.

Playwright’s device settings can configure viewport and device scale factor, along with touch support, user agent, and related parameters. This is useful for repeatable checks in a test suite; label the resulting images as emulated screenshots rather than physical iPhone captures. See Playwright emulation.
Fix the viewport, scale factor, and test data between runs. When a reported issue may depend on iOS UI, browser chrome, the keyboard, native form controls, or physical-device characteristics, follow automated checks with Simulator or phone testing. No particular Playwright device profile makes that follow-up unnecessary.
Check more than the screenshot
A screenshot is evidence of one page state, not a complete mobile test. For a visual defect, also check the behavior most likely to trigger it:
- Scroll vertically and look for horizontal overflow.
- Open forms with the keyboard visible and test the affected controls.
- Change orientation and check whether the layout recovers.
- Scroll past sticky or fixed elements as browser UI changes.
- Test zoom and the interaction associated with the reported defect.
Address-bar changes, the on-screen keyboard, and device-specific form controls can affect layout, so a fixed viewport may not reproduce the problem. Apple’s Safari design guidance discusses these layout considerations: Designing for iOS.

Troubleshoot common inspection and comparison problems
- The iPhone does not appear under Safari’s Develop menu: Confirm Web Inspector is enabled under Settings > Safari > Advanced, reconnect the phone, and approve any trust prompt. For a Simulator, make sure it is booted.
- The Safari page is missing: Open the target page in Safari on the iPhone, then check the device’s submenu in Mac Safari’s Develop menu again.
- Chrome’s page does not appear: Check that the device and Chrome meet the versions in Google’s documented workflow, that Chrome’s Web Inspector option is enabled, and that Chrome has been relaunched with the target page open. Google’s menu steps may change over time.
- The screenshot differs from the bug report: Recheck orientation, scroll position, browser version, page state, image and font loading, and whether the report involved the keyboard or address bar. A desktop responsive preview may not reproduce those conditions.
- Automated output looks unlike the phone: Verify viewport and scale-factor settings, but do not interpret emulation as a real-device capture. Reproduce the case in Simulator or on hardware when device-specific behavior is material.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; use it for a server-side page capture when you do not need to inspect a page inside iPhone Safari or Chrome. Its capture cleanup accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of the target URL. Create an API key and see request options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. This API capture does not replace checking the live page in the actual iPhone browser when browser-specific behavior is the question.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.

Can I inspect an iPhone Chrome page using Safari on a Mac?
Yes. Google’s documented workflow attaches Safari Web Inspector to a Chrome page on iPhone, subject to the stated iOS and Chrome version requirements.
Does an automated mobile screenshot prove what an iPhone displays?
No. Emulated settings are useful for repeatable checks but do not establish results on a physical iPhone.
