Use Microsoft Entra’s branding preview for a quick check of a branding theme’s style and layout, but do not treat it as a complete sign-in test: it shows only the sign-in page and omits custom text overrides. For CSS changes, Microsoft recommends validating in a test tenant before production. Then inspect the rendered experience in the target application and a representative sign-in flow.
Choose the right branding workflow first
Microsoft Entra offers tenant-wide company branding and branding themes associated with selected applications. These are different scopes, so identify which one your change uses before validating it.

Microsoft documents a limit of up to five branding themes per tenant. Check the current company branding documentation for current availability and behavior.
Confirm access, licensing, and CSS eligibility
- Company branding requires the Organizational Branding Administrator role. Microsoft lists Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, or SharePoint Plan 1 among qualifying licensing prerequisites.
- Applying a theme to target applications also requires Application Administrator permissions for those applications.
- If you plan to use custom CSS, check the current CSS policy and whether your tenant is eligible before designing the test. Microsoft documents restrictions based on tenant creation date and existing CSS use, as well as retirement of layout and positioning properties and eventual CSS retirement.
These requirements and policies can change. Verify the current conditions in Microsoft’s branding guidance and CSS reference before relying on a particular configuration.

Preview a branding theme in the admin center
- Open the Microsoft Entra admin center and go to the branding theme configuration for the relevant application or applications.
- Make the intended theme changes, then use the Preview control to inspect the style and layout.
- Review the configuration as well as the preview before creating or applying the theme.
- Separately review any custom text overrides and validate the actual target application and sign-in flow.
The preview is a limited visual aid: Microsoft says it displays only the sign-in page, previews style and layout, and does not include custom text overrides. It does not establish that text, a full authentication flow, browser or device rendering, or production behavior has been tested. See Microsoft’s theme preview guidance.
Validate CSS and rendered behavior in a test tenant
For CSS changes, Microsoft’s CSS reference guide says: “To validate the visual impact before you update production, apply the changes in a test tenant first.” Use a separate tenant to inspect the effect of the CSS, then verify the real experience in the target application before making the corresponding production change.

- Apply the proposed CSS in the test tenant, not production.
- Inspect the rendered sign-in experience, including the properties and page areas the change is intended to affect.
- Review custom text separately, since the theme preview does not show those overrides.
- Test the representative application and sign-in path with the browser and user conditions relevant to your users.
- After the test results meet your acceptance criteria, apply the change in production and verify the resulting experience there.
This validation is broader than the theme preview, but it is still not a guarantee for every app, sign-in route, browser, or user condition. Select representative cases based on the affected audience.
Decide what evidence is sufficient before production
- Scope: Record whether the change is default tenant branding or an application-specific theme, and identify affected applications.
- Visual result: Check the theme preview where available and inspect the rendered page in the test tenant for CSS changes.
- Text: Review custom text overrides outside the preview.
- Flow: Complete a representative sign-in through the target application; a static preview cannot establish end-to-end behavior.
- Eligibility: Confirm roles, licensing, theme availability, and current CSS policy.
Screenshot the rendered page for review
A browser screenshot can help reviewers compare a rendered page with an approved design, but it captures appearance rather than proving that authentication works. Keep a separate sign-in-flow check in your validation plan.

For a manual record, open the test tenant’s sign-in page in a browser and capture the relevant viewport or full page using the browser’s screenshot function. Label the capture with the tenant, application, change revision, and date so it is not mistaken for a production result.

- The preview looks right, but the sign-in page differs: The preview covers only style and layout on the sign-in page. Inspect the rendered experience in the test tenant and target application.
- Custom text is missing from the preview: This is a documented limitation. Review text overrides separately and verify them in the appropriate sign-in flow.
- A theme does not appear for an application: Check that the theme is associated with the intended application and that the administrator has Application Administrator permissions for the target app.
- CSS options are unavailable: Check tenant eligibility and Microsoft’s current CSS policy, including tenant creation date and whether the tenant already uses CSS.
- A CSS change has unexpected visual effects: Reproduce it in the test tenant, inspect the rendered page, and review whether the CSS relies on properties Microsoft is retiring.
- Some page details look unchanged: In a theme, unspecified properties fall back to default branding. Check whether the property was actually set in the theme and whether the expected scope is tenant-wide or application-specific.
