Why test both the text and the layout?
A date or price can be wrong even when it fits neatly on screen, and a correctly formatted value can still break a layout. A screenshot helps reveal visual changes, but a text assertion pinpoints whether the date, separators, amount, or currency is incorrect. Use both checks in the same locale-specific test.
There is no universal locale matrix. Choose cases from the markets your app supports, prioritizing formats that can affect the UI: month-first and day-first dates, different decimal and grouping separators, a currency symbol placed after the amount, and currencies with different fraction-digit behavior.
Choose how to organize locale coverage

Playwright supports locale and timezone settings in project configuration and on browser contexts. The project approach makes the test matrix visible in configuration; context creation is convenient for loops or data-driven cases. Neither approach is a published performance benchmark—the right choice depends on how your team runs tests and reviews baselines.

Configure a locale and timezone explicitly
Here is a Playwright Test example using two project configurations. Replace the locale and timezone values with combinations relevant to your supported markets. The page and assertions below are illustrative: adapt the URL, selectors, and expected strings to your app.

});Browser timezone emulation does not change the timezone used by the test runner itself. If application code or test setup outside the browser depends on the runner’s local timezone, set the TZ environment variable for the test process as well. Keep this distinction explicit: browser-rendered dates and dates generated by the runner can otherwise follow different timezone settings.
Assert the formatted date and currency
Use deterministic values rather than dates or prices that change between runs. For example, render a fixed date and amount in the page, then assert the exact expected output for each project. The appropriate string depends on your application’s formatting rules, including whether it displays a currency symbol or code.

Use locale-specific expected values, for example by branching on the project name or supplying each project’s fixture and expected text. Avoid assuming that a locale alone determines your product’s exact output: application settings such as currency choice and formatting rules also matter.
Capture and review screenshot baselines
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference screenshot when one does not exist and compares later captures with it. Keep the generated baselines under version control and review proposed changes before accepting them. The assertion API documents PNG and WebP screenshot formats. Make the captured area match the question you need to answer. A targeted screenshot of a price summary is useful for detecting local wrapping or clipping; a full-page capture can reveal page-level overflow. Test relevant viewport breakpoints when the layout is responsive. Those are practical extensions to screenshot comparison, not a prescribed universal coverage standard.

Keep comparisons stable and meaningful
Playwright cautions that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Create and compare baselines in a consistent environment where practical: pin the browser version, use the same OS or container, viewport, and headless configuration, and avoid switching machines between baseline generation and routine checks. - Use fixed dates, prices, and other fixture data; if a date depends on “now,” freeze or control the clock.
- Set browser locale and timezone explicitly, and set the test runner’s timezone separately if required.
- Keep viewport and browser configuration stable across baseline creation and comparison.
- Disable or normalize genuinely dynamic content rather than loosening screenshot tolerances until important layout changes are hidden.
- Review each baseline update deliberately, especially when formatting or shared layout code changes.
Troubleshoot common failures
The date or currency text assertion fails
Check the active project or context’s locale, the expected format, the app’s selected currency, and whether fixture data is stable. If the date is generated outside the browser, verify the runner timezone too; browser timezone emulation does not set it.

The text is correct but the screenshot differs
Look for a genuine layout change first: wrapping, clipping, alignment, or overflow. Then check whether the baseline and current run use the same browser version, operating system or container, viewport, headless mode, and stable data. Do not update the baseline until you understand the difference.

The screenshot changes between runs
Identify changing content such as current timestamps or asynchronous page elements and make it deterministic or normalize it. Recheck that the screenshot environment is consistent. Increasing tolerance can mask meaningful differences, so use it only when the remaining variation is understood and acceptable.
A locale project shows another locale’s output
Confirm the project selected for the run and whether the page is actually using the browser’s locale or an app-level language preference. For context-based tests, create a fresh context with the intended settings and close it after use rather than carrying state across locale cases.
