Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest iOS widgets in two separate ways: use Xcode previews to inspect supplied timeline states and supported appearances, then run the widget outside the Xcode debugger to evaluate normal refresh scheduling. A preview can show you what each entry should look like; it cannot prove that WidgetKit will display that entry at its timestamp.
Understand what a timeline test can—and cannot—prove
A WidgetKit timeline contains dated entries describing the content the widget should show, along with a reload policy that tells WidgetKit when it may request another timeline. The first entry should represent the current date and time; later entries describe intended changes. See Apple’s Timeline documentation and TimelineProvider documentation.

An entry’s date is not a guaranteed on-screen update time. Apple states that “WidgetKit may not update the widget’s view exactly at a timeline entry’s date. The update may occur at a later date.” Build tests around whether the widget progresses through the expected states within an acceptable window, not whether a display changes at an exact instant.
Build representative states before testing
Choose entries that exercise the user-visible changes your widget needs to handle. A compact test timeline might include:
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Current state: the ordinary, usable view at the present time.
- Boundary transition: a meaningful change, such as a countdown reaching zero or a scheduled event beginning.
- Stale or unavailable data: the state shown when the widget cannot provide fresh content.
- Recovery: the view after data becomes available again.
Use dates that make the transition under test clear, and include only the relevant entries when a shorter timeline makes iteration easier. These are test-design examples, not requirements imposed by WidgetKit. Do not treat an entry date as a promise of exact delivery.
Use Xcode previews to inspect entries and presentation
Xcode’s widget preview support lets you present timeline entries and navigate between them to review content changes. Supply explicit entries for the state or transition you want to inspect rather than relying on an incidental provider result. Apple documents preview contexts that include StandBy and the iPad Lock Screen; available contexts can depend on the Xcode version and target platform. See Previewing widgets and Live Activities in Xcode.

For each supported widget family, inspect the relevant appearance and context combinations. Check that text, essential status, and controls or imagery remain legible in the space available. Confirm the families and deployment targets your app actually supports before treating a preview as coverage of a particular device or OS. Apple’s Widgets and watch complications collection provides platform context, but it does not define your project’s support matrix.
Check reload policy semantics separately
A timeline’s policy affects when WidgetKit may ask the provider for another timeline; it does not make a requested update appear immediately. Choose and test the policy that matches the data lifecycle:

.atEnd: appropriate when WidgetKit should request another timeline after the existing entries are exhausted..after(date): use when a future reload request point is meaningful for the widget’s data or state..never: use when the timeline should not request another one on its own; when state changes, the containing app can prompt WidgetKit to reload as appropriate.
WidgetCenter can request a reload for a particular widget kind or for all configured widgets. Treat that call as a request, not a guarantee of an immediate visible change: policy dates and reload requests operate within system-managed scheduling. Apple documents the API in WidgetCenter.
Run outside the debugger to test normal scheduling
Previews are useful for repeatable visual and state checks, but Xcode debugging does not apply the normal WidgetKit reload limit. To assess production-like refresh behavior, run the containing app and widget outside the Xcode debugger and observe them under ordinary use. Apple describes this distinction in its TimelineProvider refresh-behavior guidance.

Normal refresh scheduling is dynamic. Apple’s 2026 guidance says the daily budget for a frequently viewed widget typically includes 40 to 70 refreshes, roughly corresponding to reloads every 15 to 60 minutes; actual intervals vary. The budget reflects factors including visibility, the last reload, and whether the containing app is active. StandBy uses a system-defined refresh rate that does not count against the widget’s budget. These are Apple’s typical guidance figures, not a fixed rate or per-widget guarantee. See Keeping a widget up to date.
Do not encode a fixed daily refresh count or exact timeline execution time into product behavior. When comparing runs, note whether the widget was visible and whether the app was active; those conditions can affect the scheduling you observe.

Use both methods for a complete test
| Method | Best for | Reproducibility | Normal budget fidelity | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xcode preview | Inspecting supplied entries, transitions, and supported presentation contexts | High for the states you provide | No; debugger preview does not reproduce normal reload-budget behavior | Deterministic for inspecting supplied states, not a test of system delivery time |
| Run outside the debugger | Checking WidgetKit scheduling under normal runtime conditions | Lower; scheduling is system managed | Yes, exercises normal scheduling and budget rules | Variable; do not require an exact display instant |
Use previews to find visual and state-transition defects quickly, then use a non-debugger run when the question is whether the system refreshes under ordinary conditions. Neither method replaces the other.
Review Lock Screen and StandBy coverage against your app
Include Lock Screen and StandBy checks where the app’s supported families, target platforms, devices, and OS versions make them applicable. Keep these presentation reviews distinct from scheduling tests: a preview checks how supplied content appears in a supported context, while a non-debugger runtime run exercises system-managed refresh behavior. The right device and OS combinations depend on the app’s own support matrix; there is no universal matrix established for every widget project.
