The right way to test household drinking water depends first on whether it comes from a public water system or a private well. Public-system customers should review the utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) and contact the utility about a specific concern. Private well owners are responsible for arranging tests, typically through a state-certified drinking-water laboratory, and should choose tests based on local risks and the well’s condition.
First identify your water source
If your home uses a public water system
Request the latest Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) from your water utility or find it through the EPA’s Consumer Confidence Report resources. Community water systems must deliver a CCR each year by July 1. It lists contaminants detected through system monitoring and whether the system meets state and federal drinking-water standards.
A CCR describes the water system, not necessarily the condition of water at your particular tap. For example, it does not rule out lead entering water through household plumbing or a service line. Contact your utility if you have a water-quality concern or suspect a contamination event. EPA does not test individual residential samples on request.
If your home uses a private well
Private domestic wells are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, so owners are responsible for testing and maintaining their water. More than 23 million private domestic wells supply drinking water to U.S. households, according to the EPA’s Drinking Water Data & Tools Guide, which associates its private-well density estimates with 2021.

EPA guidance recommends testing well water annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids (TDS), and pH. Arrange additional testing if the well system is repaired or replaced, local land use or conditions change, contamination is known nearby, or the water’s taste, odor, color, or clarity changes. After flooding or another disaster, ask your local or state health or environmental department about inspection and testing.
Choose tests for the risks near your home
There is no single test panel that establishes safety for every well. Ask your local health department, state environmental agency, agricultural extension service, or nearby public water-system officials what contaminants are known in your area. EPA’s private-well guidance gives examples of risks and related tests:

| Possible source or clue | Tests to consider |
|---|---|
| Lead-bearing household plumbing or a service line | pH, lead, and copper |
| Intensive agriculture nearby | Nitrate, nitrite, pesticides, and coliform bacteria |
| Mining | Metals, pH, and corrosion |
| Gas drilling | Chloride, sodium, barium, and strontium |
| Landfills, industrial sites, gas stations, or dry cleaners | Potentially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), TDS, pH, sulfate, chloride, and metals |
| Fuel odor or nearby buried fuel tanks | VOCs |
| Salty taste or road salt nearby | Chloride, TDS, and sodium |
| Staining, scale, odor, or poor soap lather | Tests for iron, copper, manganese, hardness, hydrogen sulfide, or corrosion, as appropriate to the symptom |
Some tests investigate aesthetic problems such as taste, odor, appearance, or staining rather than immediate health risks. A change is still worth investigating, but taste, smell, and appearance cannot identify a contaminant or show that water is safe.
Arrange testing with a certified laboratory
Use a laboratory certified for drinking-water testing. Find a state-certified lab through your state program or ask your local health department whether it offers testing or can recommend a laboratory. EPA’s advice is direct: “Only use laboratories that are certified to do drinking water testing.” — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Protect Your Home’s Water”.

- All-in-One 26-Parameter Water Test Kit: This comprehensive testing set screens 26 key water quality markers in one simple operation, covering water hardness, residual chlorine, pH value, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid, copper, iron, lead, manganese, aluminum, zinc, bromine, nitrate, sodium chloride and dozens of other vital water metrics. It delivers an easy, reliable method for routine household water quality inspection.
- 158 Test Strips for Long-Term Water Tracking: This kit contains 158 individual test strips to support repeated regular inspections. You can record and track long-term shifts of your water metrics instead of relying on single one-off readings, ideal for families who want consistent visibility of daily water conditions.
- Dedicated E. Coli Indicator Test Included: Beyond the 26-in-1 multi-metric water screening function, this kit adds an independent test strip for E. Coli markers. This extra detection item helps users identify potential fecal contamination signals in tap water, well water and all daily household water sources for complete water profile reference.
- Quick Testing Process & Easy-to-Read Results: Testing steps are straightforward and time-saving: dip the strip into water for 2 seconds, wait for 30 seconds, then match strip color tones with the included reference chart. The fully labeled color comparison card enables accurate visual matching even for first-time users without professional knowledge.

The kit also comes with matching pipettes and test tubes to support clean, precise water sample collection for every test.
Certification involves approved testing methods, certification by EPA or a state, proficiency testing at least annually for each method and analyte, and periodic on-site audits, according to the EPA’s drinking-water laboratory certification guidance. When contacting a lab, confirm it is certified for the specific analytes you need; certification for one method or substance does not establish that it can test everything.
Collect the sample exactly as the lab directs
Call the laboratory before collecting water. The correct bottle, collection method, preservation, storage, and delivery timing can differ by test. The lab’s current instructions take precedence over generic sampling advice.

- 16-Parameter Initial Screening in 30 Seconds – Quickly determine if further laboratory testing is needed. Our simple immersion reading method allows you to obtain accurate water quality information without waiting or traveling. Add water to the testing kit, set a timer, and read the results.
- Tips for accurate testing: To obtain reliable water quality test results, it is recommended that you Keep wet fingers away from the strips; Use and Read in DAYLIGHT or 6500K LED; Keep strip HORIZONTAL — running colors can darken the pad; Match within 30-45 sec — colors keep changing after 60 sec; If between two blocks, record the HIGHER value for safety;
- Complete test: our test currently offers the most cared for parameters on the market, it contains 16 parameters covering all the major contaminants you need to worry about, it tests for total hardness, free chlorine, total chlorine, bromine, total alkalinity, pH, nitrate, nitrite, copper, iron, lead, nickel, carbonate, MPS, cyanuric acid, sulfite.Lead Testing Note: 1 ppm = 1 second vs 1 ppb = 0.001 seconds. If the test result is ≤15 ppb, it is recommended to send the sample to a laboratory for more accurate results.
- Test various water sources: Our drinking water testing kit allows you to test any water source in your home, including drinking water, well water, tap water, hard water, hardness water, softened water, pool water, spa water, hot tub water, aquarium water and api freshwater master test kit.
- Confirm the analytes and collection plan. Tell the lab what you want tested and ask whether it offers or recommends a trained sampler.
- Obtain the lab’s containers. Use the bottles it supplies or specifies. Coliform bacteria samples require sterile containers and sterile collection conditions.
- Follow each test’s instructions. The lab may specify whether to flush the tap first; some tests may require flushing an outside tap. Follow its directions for preservation and handling as well.
- Deliver the sample on time. Ask the lab how to store and transport each sample and when it must arrive.
EPA’s household well fact sheet advises asking whether the lab can send a trained sampler, since professional collection may produce better samples and more reliable results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Read the report as a measurement, not a safety guarantee
A useful laboratory report identifies what was tested and gives the concentration measured. It may compare the result with national primary or secondary drinking-water standards. Check the analyte, units, and comparison standard, and make sure the lab tested the substance relevant to your concern. A result for one contaminant says nothing about contaminants that were not tested, and it does not guarantee that water is free of all hazards.

If a result exceeds a health standard, contact your local public health department for advice and arrange retesting to confirm both the contaminant’s presence and its concentration. Treatment depends on the contaminant, its concentration, and the condition of the well. Establish what is present before choosing a filter or treatment device, and verify that the proposed treatment is appropriate for that specific contaminant.
