To reproduce a website issue on this legacy setup, test it in the exact combination of macOS Mojave and Safari 12, and record both versions with your results. A newer Safari or Safari Technology Preview may help investigate whether a bug has since changed, but neither reproduces Safari 12.
When to test this legacy browser combination
Treat macOS Mojave and Safari 12 as a targeted test case, not as a general-purpose modern compatibility baseline. It is appropriate when you need to reproduce a customer report, protect an explicitly supported legacy audience, or investigate a historical defect. Include the operating system and browser versions in bug reports and test notes: a different WebKit build can produce different results.
BrowserStack’s capability documentation identifies macOS Mojave with Safari 12.0. That is useful evidence for the pairing, but cloud-service catalogs can change; check the live inventory before relying on it.
Choose a way to access Safari 12
Use a local Mac
A local Mac gives you direct access to the browser for hands-on reproduction and debugging, including workflows involving local or internal sites. First confirm that the Mac can run the target macOS release and that the installation actually provides Safari 12. The reviewed documentation does not identify a particular Mac model as the recommended host, so verify model and OS compatibility before buying or repurposing hardware.

Use a cloud browser service
BrowserStack advertises older Safari versions, including Safari 12.1, and its capability documentation identifies Mojave with Safari 12.0. Those are not interchangeable configurations: select the exact Safari and OS versions needed and verify that the pairing remains available for your account and testing mode.
Sauce Labs advertises Safari testing and cloud live testing, but its reviewed product information does not establish availability of the specific Mojave/Safari 12 pairing. Confirm the exact selectors with the provider before building a workflow around it. A general claim of Safari support does not establish support for this legacy combination.

Do not substitute Safari Technology Preview
Safari Technology Preview is a separate app that runs alongside Safari and receives newer WebKit updates every few weeks. It is useful for exploring upcoming behavior, but it is not a fixed Safari 12 environment. A historical Technology Preview release note describes a WebDriver hang on a Mojave beta; that preview-specific issue should not be generalized to Safari 12.
Build a focused compatibility test
- Write down the target and reason. Record macOS Mojave and Safari 12, plus whether the task is reproducing a report, checking a support commitment, or investigating a historical bug. If using a cloud service, record the exact selectable OS and Safari versions.
- Capture the starting conditions. Note the page URL, viewport dimensions, relevant account or data state, and the steps needed to reach the issue. Keep these consistent when comparing another browser or operating system.
- Test observable user behavior. Cover the flows relevant to the site: navigation, form entry and validation, state changes, keyboard interaction, responsive layout, and media behavior. Add specific CSS or JavaScript cases implicated by the defect. Assertions should check what a user can observe rather than depend on browser internals.
- Repeat in other supported configurations. Use WebDriver-compliant drivers to run the same stable workflow in other browser/OS combinations. Apple’s WebDriver documentation describes a cross-browser API for automating web content interactions; keeping the scenario consistent makes differences easier to isolate.
- Inspect visually and manually. Review rendering and interaction details that automated assertions may miss, especially when the bug concerns layout, focus, scrolling, or a multi-step workflow. A screenshot can document appearance, but does not establish that every interaction works.
- Keep a reproducible record. Save the browser and OS versions, viewport, test result, reproduction steps, and relevant screenshots or logs. Report only tests that were actually executed.
Automate Safari with WebDriver
Safari supports WebDriver automation through Apple’s safaridriver. Apple links Safari 12-and-later driver references from its Safari resources and provides general WebDriver documentation. Use the Safari-specific reference for setup and command details on the machine running the target Safari; do not assume instructions for a newer macOS release apply unchanged to Mojave.

Start by automating a small, stable user journey, such as opening a page, entering a value, submitting a form, and asserting the visible result. Keep manual checks for visual and workflow issues your assertions do not cover. When the same test is run elsewhere, use the corresponding WebDriver-compatible driver rather than treating another browser’s behavior as Safari’s.

- The result differs from a customer’s report: confirm the exact macOS and Safari versions, viewport, page state, and reproduction steps. A newer Safari or Technology Preview is not an equivalent reproduction environment.
- The cloud service does not show Mojave/Safari 12: check the provider’s current browser and OS selectors and ask whether the exact pairing is available for your account and test mode. Do not infer availability from general Safari support or an older product page.
- WebDriver does not start or a test hangs: check Apple’s Safari 12-and-later WebDriver references for setup on the target system, and isolate whether the failure occurs in Safari 12 itself or another preview build. A historical Technology Preview hang on Mojave beta is not evidence of a Safari 12 defect.
- A screenshot looks correct but the flow fails: screenshots show appearance at a point in time. Exercise the actual input, keyboard, validation, navigation, and state transitions in Safari.

No. It is a separately updated preview app, not a version-pinned Safari 12 installation.
