Assert the browser state and page behavior before capturing or comparing images.
Build deterministic tests around cookie state
A screenshot alone cannot tell you whether a banner is wrong or the browser began in the wrong state. Set up independent first-visit and returning-visitor cases, then check the expected UI before capturing. The exact cookie name, value, scope, and banner behavior depend on the application.
1. Find the real consent cookie
Use the application’s consent implementation or complete a genuine consent interaction to learn the cookie name and value format. Record its domain, path, and expiry behavior. Do not guess a value such as accepted: the application may expect structured data, a version, or a different representation.
2. Give each case its own starting state
For a first-visit image, use a clean browser context or clear the consent cookie before loading the page. For a returning-visitor image, set the known cookie deliberately. Do not let one test inherit the previous test’s choice. Add separate cases for accepted, rejected, or customized preferences if those choices lead to distinct saved states.

Assert that the banner is visible in the no-consent case and hidden or updated as expected in the saved-consent case. Check the cookie itself when useful. Wait for consent initialization, page rendering, and relevant animations to settle; otherwise a timing difference can look like a visual regression.
4. Keep the comparison environment stable
Use a consistent viewport and the same browser and operating-system versions for reference and current images. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, and recommends matching OS and browser versions for visual regression tests. When a comparison fails, inspect the diff and the test’s starting state before updating the reference. A new baseline can conceal an unintended banner or consent-state change.
A useful cookie-banner test matrix

The final row applies only if the application defines expiry or recovery behavior. This matrix is a testing pattern, not a claim that all consent systems behave alike.

Cypress: clear or set cookies deliberately
Cypress documents that cookies, local storage, and session storage are cleared between tests by default. Its guidance for a known cookie value shows setting it in beforeEach; cy.setCookie() is documented at Cypress cy.setCookie(), with related behavior in the Cypress FAQ.
Here is a basic pattern. Replace the example selector, cookie name, and value with those used by your app:

})The example visits and clears before each case for clarity; adapt navigation to your application. Some apps need the cookie present before the first request, so create it for the correct domain before cy.visit(). In others, setting it and reloading is enough because consent is initialized client-side.
Cookie scope can make a correct-looking setup ineffective. Cypress documents that default domain behavior can create a cookie visible to subdomains, while hostOnly: true restricts it to the exact host. Use the intended domain and confirm that the cookie exists on the page origin under test. If tests share state by disabling test isolation, one case can affect another; Cypress documents that option and cautions about those side effects, so prefer per-test setup unless sharing is deliberate.

Playwright: use clean and initialized contexts
Playwright tests run in isolated browser contexts, which makes it practical to keep the first-visit and consented states separate. Use a clean context for the first-visit case. For the returning-visitor case, initialize a context with the correctly scoped cookie before navigation, then assert the expected page state and compare with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Follow the cookie’s real domain, path, and value requirements rather than copying an illustrative value.
Playwright’s guidance on screenshot comparison and environment consistency is in Visual comparisons. Browser state files can contain sensitive cookies and headers; treat them as credentials and keep them out of source control, as described in Playwright Authentication.

Troubleshoot the common false failures
- The banner appears in the consented screenshot: Verify the cookie name and value against the application’s actual consent flow. Confirm it was set before navigation if needed, then check its domain and path on the exact origin.
- The banner is missing from the first-visit screenshot: Clear consent state before the app initializes, and check whether another mechanism such as local storage also records consent. The cookie-only setup is insufficient if the app uses additional persisted state.
- The cookie exists but the UI ignores it: Check whether the app expects a different format or consent version, and whether the test reloads or waits for client-side initialization.
- Images differ only intermittently: Wait for asynchronous consent rendering and animation completion. Keep browser, OS, viewport, and headless settings consistent, since they can affect rendering.
- A cookie works on one host but not another: Correct the cookie’s domain and host-only behavior; a cookie for one origin may not be sent to another subdomain.
- A passing test changes after another test runs: Remove reliance on shared browser state. Establish the required cookie state in each case rather than depending on prior side effects.
- The baseline update would make the diff pass: First decide whether the UI change is intended and verify the cookie state. Replace a reference image only after investigating the difference.
Protect screenshots and saved browser state
Screenshots and browser-state artifacts can contain sensitive page content or authentication data. Cypress documents that recorded Cypress Cloud runs may store screenshots, videos, and other test data, and describes screenshot blackout controls in Cypress Cloud Data storage and controls. Decide what your team may upload and mask sensitive content where appropriate. Keep Playwright state files containing cookies or headers out of source control.
