Run a private or unlisted test stream through the same encoder, network, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you plan to use for the 24/7 broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the preview, check stream health, picture and sound, verify viewers can access the test, and test backup switching if you have a redundant setup. A successful connection alone does not prove the full stream is ready.
1. Confirm your channel and event are ready
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16. Platform requirements can change, so confirm eligibility in YouTube Live Control Room before scheduling the broadcast. YouTube’s reviewed tips page recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start; the pages do not state a publication date for these recommendations.
Schedule or create the stream in Live Control Room, but keep the rehearsal private or unlisted if you do not want it discoverable. YouTube supports public, private, and unlisted visibility. Choose the test visibility deliberately, and confirm the intended setting before the eventual public launch.
2. Connect the encoder safely
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you will use for the rehearsal.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Paste them into the matching fields in your encoder. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends the encrypted extension of RTMP.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, screen recordings, public logs, or tutorials. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s stream settings; update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Set the stream visibility to private or unlisted for a non-public rehearsal, then save the stream settings.
Do not assume that selecting a private or unlisted test event changes the visibility of a separate scheduled event. Check the selected stream and its audience setting before transmitting.

3. Match the intended encoder settings
Use the production resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate for the rehearsal. Include representative movement and actual audio: a static title card will not expose the same motion or synchronization problems as the intended content. YouTube’s settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; CBR; frame rates up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 minimum and recommended bitrates on its settings page, which does not state a publication date. YouTube also lists separate bitrate values for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the values for your selected codec rather than applying the H.264 table to another codec. A recommended bitrate is not a promise that your connection can sustain it.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
For audio, YouTube’s advanced settings guidance specifies stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio it specifies AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Choose the format that matches the production and confirm audio is present in the preview.
4. Check upload capacity on the actual encoder connection
The relevant constraint is sustained upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total outgoing bitrate and notes that other devices or applications sharing the network can reduce what is available to the encoder. Run a speed test on the same connection the encoder will use, preferably while the usual network load is present.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- For a single encoder, add the encoder’s outgoing bitrate and the 20% margin. For example, a 17 Mbps H.264 video setting needs at least 20.4 Mbps of available upload capacity under this calculation, before accounting for other simultaneous uploads.
- For a primary and backup encoder sending concurrently, include both bitrates, then add the 20% margin. YouTube’s guidance states to allow for primary plus backup plus 20%.
- If capacity fluctuates or the connection is shared, reduce the output bitrate or improve the available upload capacity before relying on it for a continuous stream.
The 20% headroom recommendation is on YouTube’s undated guidance page (accessed 2026). An internet interruption can break a live stream, so evaluate the connection actually used by the encoder rather than relying on a separate device’s result.
5. Start the rehearsal and inspect the preview
- Start the encoder, then wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room before starting the scheduled event.
- Check framing, focus, exposure, movement, and whether fast motion remains clear at the chosen settings.
- Listen for clean audio, clipping, missing channels, unwanted noise, and audio/video sync drift. Check the same kind of sound and movement expected in the real broadcast.
- Read stream-health messages in Live Control Room and monitor them during the rehearsal. A connected encoder does not by itself establish that the stream is healthy.
- Check playback from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device, as YouTube’s tips recommend. Confirm the viewer can open the stream with the chosen privacy setting.
- If you are recording a local copy, verify that the file opens and that its size continues to grow while recording.
6. Test backup behavior and end the rehearsal
If you have a backup encoder configured, test the failover before depending on it. YouTube’s tips describe stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming the player switches to the backup. Do this during a controlled rehearsal, not during the public launch; understand how your setup behaves before restoring the primary encoder.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one uninterrupted archive. If you need a recording, validate your archive approach for the intended duration and plan how any restart or interruption will affect continuity. Do not treat the under-12-hour statement as a guarantee for a 24/7 stream.

Common test failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears | The encoder has not connected or its stream details do not match. | Check that the server URL and stream key belong to the selected YouTube stream, then restart the encoder and wait for the preview. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or connection | The outgoing bitrate exceeds steady upload capacity, or the network is busy. | Test upload on the encoder’s actual path, account for shared use, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower bitrate if needed. |
| Motion looks poor despite a clear static screen | The test content did not reflect the movement in the real program, or the bitrate is unsuitable. | Repeat with representative motion at the intended resolution and frame rate; check the YouTube bitrate guidance for the selected codec. |
| Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync | The encoder’s audio source, format, level, or synchronization differs from the production setup. | Use the actual production audio path, confirm AAC or MP3 output and the applicable YouTube audio settings, and listen to viewer playback. |
| Viewers cannot open the test | The selected privacy setting or viewer account may not permit access. | Check whether the event is private or unlisted and test from the channel/watch page and a mobile device using an account with the intended access. |
| Backup does not take over | The configured backup path or player switching behavior has not been validated. | During a controlled test, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and observe whether the player switches to the backup. |
| One archive does not cover the continuous broadcast | The automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed 24-hour file. | Validate recording, restart, and continuity plans for the intended duration before launch. |
