To check a WhatsApp link preview before sharing it, paste the exact public website URL into a new message and wait for the card to appear. Check its image, title, any visible description, and destination before sending. There is no separate India-specific preview process established by the available sources; the same practical test is to confirm the live page and then check the card in WhatsApp.
Test the exact link you plan to share
- Copy the final public URL, including the page route. A homepage, another route, or a private content-management preview may return different metadata.
- If you own the website, inspect the live page’s returned HTML and check the Open Graph values in its
<head>:og:title,og:description,og:url, andog:image. The Open Graph protocol also identifiesog:typeas a core property. See the Open Graph protocol. - Make sure the page and the image URL are publicly reachable. If you change metadata, publish or deploy the update, then check that the live page returns the new values.
- Open a new WhatsApp message, paste the exact URL, and wait for the preview card. Check the title, image, any description WhatsApp displays, and the website destination.
- Use a private test chat or test group if you do not want to send the link to its intended recipients yet. Do not send the message until you have checked the card.
A metadata checker can help you diagnose what a page publishes or model an expected card. It cannot guarantee WhatsApp’s final rendering: WhatsApp controls what appears in the app, and cached or app-specific behavior may affect the result. A fresh message in WhatsApp is the practical final check.
Check whether link previews are disabled
If WhatsApp shows only the plain URL, first check the sender’s privacy setting. WhatsApp’s Help Center says that turning on “Disable link previews” prevents links you send from generating a preview, as an additional privacy layer to protect the sender’s IP address. The Help Center says the setting is off by default and lists this path: Settings or profile picture > Privacy > Advanced. Labels may change, so follow the current interface on your device. Disabling previews does not affect links you receive from others. See WhatsApp Help Center: How to disable link previews.
Fix a missing, stale, or incorrect preview
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only the plain URL appears | Whether link previews are disabled for the sender, and whether the exact public page can be fetched and returns useful metadata. | Check the privacy setting, then confirm the live page publishes appropriate Open Graph values. |
| The title or description is wrong | The metadata on the exact URL you pasted. A different route can return different page data. | Correct the values for that page, publish the change, and verify the public page before testing again in a new WhatsApp message. |
| The image is missing or wrong | Whether og:image points to the intended image and whether that image is publicly reachable. |
Correct the image value if needed, publish the update, and confirm the live page returns the intended value. |
| A checker looks right but WhatsApp does not | The preview shown in WhatsApp itself, rather than assuming a checker controls the app’s rendering. | After confirming the public page’s metadata, test the URL in a new WhatsApp message. |
| The website is fixed but an old card remains | Whether the live page now returns the corrected metadata. | Once the public update is confirmed, make a fresh test. Do not keep changing correct metadata solely because an old message still shows an earlier card. |
What each check can confirm
- Inspecting the public page’s HTML shows what metadata the live page returns. It does not show exactly how WhatsApp will render the card.
- A preview checker can help diagnose or model page metadata. Treat its result as a diagnostic, not a guarantee of the app’s final preview.
- A new WhatsApp message lets you inspect the card in the app before sending it to the intended audience.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website you own, you can use ScreenshotNeo to capture the live page and inspect what it looks like. A screenshot can help check the rendered page, but it does not replace checking Open Graph metadata or confirming the preview in WhatsApp. For example, this cURL request captures a page as an image:
