Test rupee prices with two complementary checks: assert the exact text your app promises for each supported locale and currency, then compare a screenshot of the price UI against a reviewed baseline. The text assertion catches a wrong value directly; the screenshot catches visual regressions such as changed symbol placement, spacing, clipping, or alignment.

Define the rupee display your app promises

Before writing a snapshot test, make the product contract explicit. Decide which locale and currency code the UI uses, the fraction-digit and rounding policy, whether it displays a symbol or a currency code, and whether locale can change independently of region. Rupees are used by multiple currencies, so do not infer the currency from the word “rupee” alone; configure the code that matches the product.

JavaScript’s Intl.NumberFormat formats according to a locale and options. For currency output, set style: 'currency' and an explicit currency code rather than relying on the machine’s default locale. See MDN’s Intl.NumberFormat constructor reference and Intl.NumberFormat overview.

Do not copy a rupee string from an unrelated browser and assume it is universal. Locale formatting can include non-breaking spaces or bidirectional controls, and output may vary between implementations. MDN’s en-IN example shows Indian grouping for the decimal number 123456.789 as 1,23,456.789; that is not a canonical INR currency string. Define the expected output for your supported runtime and test that contract there. See MDN’s format method reference.

Choose values that expose formatting errors

Build cases around the behavior your interface supports. A useful starting matrix includes a small amount, a fractional amount, a value near a grouping boundary, and a larger amount that exposes lakh/crore grouping. Add zero, discount, and negative or refund states only when those states exist in the product.

This is a practical test design, not a prescribed standard. The expected string should come from the application’s agreed locale, currency, fraction-digit, and rounding policy—not from a guessed universal literal.

Write the Playwright text and screenshot checks

The following TypeScript pattern assumes the app has a deterministic fixture route and a price element with data-testid="price". Replace the route, currency, locale, and expected value with your application’s actual contract. The sample deliberately leaves the expected rupee string as a test-owned value rather than asserting an unverified universal output.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

const expectedPriceForEnIN = process.env.EXPECTED_PRICE_EN_IN;

if (!expectedPriceForEnIN) {
  throw new Error('Set EXPECTED_PRICE_EN_IN to the display string approved for this app and runtime.');
}

test('renders the approved rupee price for en-IN', async ({ browser }) => {
  const context = await browser.newContext({ locale: 'en-IN' });
  const page = await context.newPage();

  try {
    await page.goto('/product?fixture=price-boundary');
    const price = page.getByTestId('price');

    await expect(price).toHaveText(expectedPriceForEnIN);
    await expect(price).toHaveScreenshot('price-en-IN.png');
  } finally {
    await context.close();
  }
});

Set EXPECTED_PRICE_EN_IN in the test environment to the string your product team has approved for the supported browser and runtime. A browser context’s locale affects formatting only if the application actually derives its locale from that setting. If the app uses a locale selector or an explicit product policy, set that state directly in the test and assert it.

The text assertion and visual assertion do different jobs. toHaveText() reports a wrong or missing displayed value; toHaveScreenshot() detects presentation changes. Prefer a component screenshot for a focused price regression. Use a whole-page snapshot only when full-page layout is part of the requirement and the page can be made deterministic. Playwright discusses the trade-offs in its snapshot testing documentation.

Establish and review screenshot baselines

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image on the first run and compares subsequent captures against it. The result depends on the rendering environment, including browser and host operating system. Create and review baselines using the same browser, OS, fonts, and rendering setup used by CI; otherwise, environment differences can create noisy diffs. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.

  1. Run the test in the intended environment. On its initial run, inspect the generated reference image to verify the actual approved output and layout.
  2. Keep the test state stable. Fix the fixture data, viewport, font availability, and any dynamic content that affects the price region.
  3. Review every changed image. When a design change is intentional, inspect the diff and use Playwright’s snapshot-update flow deliberately. Do not automatically approve an unexplained change.
  4. Keep browser and host setup consistent. A baseline produced on a different browser or OS may not be a meaningful comparison.

Reduce screenshot noise without hiding real regressions

Screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive captures to match before comparison. Playwright provides controls for animations, styling, image scale, masks, and acceptable differences. Use them to address a known source of noise, not to make an unexplained mismatch pass. A broad difference threshold can hide a changed symbol or a clipped digit, so choose one only after deciding which differences are harmless for this component. See the PageAssertions API.

  • Animations: disable or settle animation when it makes the capture inconsistent.
  • Volatile content: stabilize changing values or mask only content that is genuinely unrelated to the assertion.
  • Fonts and viewport: use the same loaded fonts and dimensions for baseline creation and CI comparison.
  • Scope: snapshot the price component when the requirement concerns price rendering, rather than including unrelated page regions.
  • Thresholds: set a tolerance only for a documented, acceptable rendering difference; keep text-level assertions strict.

Troubleshoot failing rupee visual tests

  • The text assertion fails but the screenshot looks right: inspect the exact text and whitespace, then confirm the expected value matches the app’s currency, locale, and rounding contract. Unicode spaces or direction controls can make visually similar strings differ.
  • The displayed price changes across machines: check whether the application relies on a default locale or runtime-specific formatting. Specify the intended locale and currency, then define expected output for the runtime used in the test matrix.
  • The screenshot diff changes on CI only: compare browser, OS, fonts, viewport, and test data with the baseline environment. Recreate baselines in the CI rendering setup rather than approving unexplained differences.
  • The screenshot is intermittently different: identify dynamic page content, animation, late-loading fonts, or asynchronous price updates. Wait for the relevant state and use Playwright’s screenshot controls only for the remaining known volatility.
  • The baseline changed after a deliberate UI update: inspect the diff first, then update snapshots intentionally with Playwright’s update-snapshots workflow.
  • A context locale has no effect: the app may use an explicit locale selector, account setting, or hard-coded policy. Drive that product state instead of assuming browser locale controls it.
