Use browser tests to capture important dashboard states, compare them with approved screenshots, and review each visual difference before updating a baseline. With Playwright Test, start with await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(); reliable results depend on repeatable test data and a consistent browser environment.

What an automated screenshot test checks

A screenshot test captures a known interface state and compares the image with a reference baseline. It is a visual regression check: a difference tells you the rendered screen changed, but a person or review process still needs to decide whether that change is intentional.

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion creates a reference image on its first run and compares later captures against it. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

Choose dashboard screens and states that matter

Do not capture every possible screen by default. Begin with screens where a visible defect would disrupt an important task, then include state variations that exercise distinct UI behavior.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  • Signed-in overview: the primary dashboard after its data has loaded.
  • Key navigation areas: important pages or tabs reached through the dashboard’s main navigation.
  • Data variations: a representative populated view and, where relevant, an empty state.
  • Interaction states: validation errors, open menus, dialogs, or other UI states users need to see.

This is a practical way to select checkpoints, not a fixed screen inventory: prioritize the states that represent real product workflows.

Make the test repeatable before comparing images

Use predictable account data

Log in with a stable test account and arrange its data so each run reaches the same state. Changing records, timestamps, identifiers, or content can create image differences unrelated to a UI regression. Use controlled test data and wait for the intended page state before capturing.

Keep the comparison environment consistent

Playwright warns that screenshot output can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baseline creation and comparison in a consistent environment—especially in CI—and treat browser or environment changes as possible sources of new diffs. The Playwright documentation describes these environment sensitivities.

Add a screenshot checkpoint with Playwright

In an existing Playwright Test project, navigate to the target state and give the screenshot a name that identifies the screen or state. This example assumes the test fixture provides an authenticated page and the application has a stable route and test data; adapt the URL and selectors to your app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('dashboard overview matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://app.example.test/dashboard');
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' })).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard-overview.png');
});

If authentication is part of the test, establish it consistently—for example, with your project’s existing login flow or configured authenticated test state—before visiting the dashboard. Avoid embedding real credentials in test source. The assertion’s first run creates the reference image; subsequent runs compare against it.

Cover another meaningful state

For a menu or dialog, make the interaction explicit before taking a separately named screenshot. That makes a failing image easier to trace to the state under test.

test('dashboard account menu matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://app.example.test/dashboard');
  await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Account' }).click();
  await expect(page.getByRole('menu')).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard-account-menu.png');
});

The sample names and selectors are illustrative; use accessible roles and names that match your application. Keep each test focused on reaching and capturing one defined state.

Review diffs and update baselines deliberately

When a comparison fails, inspect the actual image, expected baseline, and difference output. Decide whether the change reflects an intended design or content update, or an unintended regression. Visual testing is a compare-and-review workflow, not an instruction to accept every new image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Intentional change: review the new appearance and update the reference image as part of the code change.
  • Unexpected change: keep the existing baseline, investigate the UI or test setup, and fix the regression or instability.
  • Environment change: verify that browser, operating system, and execution settings match the baseline environment before interpreting the diff.

Playwright supports updating references with --update-snapshots. Run it only after deciding the difference is expected, then review the changed image files in the same way you review other code changes. See Playwright’s snapshot guidance.

Reduce noisy differences without hiding real defects

Dynamic timestamps, rotating content, and test-specific identifiers can make a stable interface look different on every run. Prefer controlling the test data or state where possible. Playwright also supports applying a stylesheet during screenshot capture to filter volatile elements; its stylePath option is documented in the visual comparisons documentation.

Logitech C920x HD Pro PC Webcam Full 1080p/30fps Video - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • HD lighting adjustment and autofocus: The Logitech webcam automatically fine-tunes the lighting, producing bright, razor-sharp images even in low-light settings. This makes it a great webcam for streaming and an ideal web camera for laptop use
  • Advanced capture software: Easily create and share video content with this Logitech camera that is suitable for use as a desktop computer camera or a monitor webcam

  • Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video

Use such exclusions narrowly. Hiding a changing value may reduce noise, but hiding a meaningful component can also conceal a genuine regression. Keep the screenshot focused on the interface behavior you intend to protect.

When a hosted visual-testing integration may help

Playwright-native snapshots are a direct starting point when your browser tests already use Playwright and your team can manage reference images and their review in that workflow. A hosted option may be worth evaluating if you need managed baseline review or broader browser and device execution.

Applitools documents an Eyes integration that adds visual checkpoints to existing Playwright tests, with vendor-described match levels, hosted baselines, grouped review, and cross-browser or device execution through its grid. These are Applitools’ product descriptions, not an independent performance or pricing comparison. Its integration page says that Eyes checks can ignore anti-aliasing, font rendering, and other rendering noise; that is a vendor statement, not a guarantee that every difference will be classified correctly. See Applitools’ Playwright integration.

Compare candidate workflows against your own needs: fit with the existing test stack and CI job, baseline location and approval process, handling of dynamic data, required browser and viewport coverage, review effort, data handling, and current verified cost. Available evidence here does not establish a current price or an objective product ranking.

Troubleshooting screenshot-test failures

The screenshot differs on every run

Likely cause: changing test data, timestamps, rotating content, incomplete loading, or an inconsistent execution environment. Fix: stabilize the test account and data, wait for the intended UI state, and compare in a consistent browser and operating-system environment. If only a known volatile element changes, consider narrowly filtering it with Playwright’s screenshot stylesheet support.

A baseline changes after a browser or CI update

Likely cause: screenshot rendering can depend on browser version and environment. Fix: confirm that the baseline and current run use the intended environment. If the change is an expected consequence of a deliberate environment update, review the new images and update references intentionally rather than treating a bulk update as automatic approval.

The test captures the wrong state

Likely cause: the page has not reached the expected state, or the test interacts with an ambiguous control. Fix: use specific accessible selectors, perform the required action, and assert that the expected heading, menu, or dialog is visible before capturing.

A screenshot update seems to fix the test, but the UI still looks wrong

Likely cause: replacing the reference accepted an unexpected change. Fix: compare the actual image with the old baseline and inspect the visual difference before updating. Restore the baseline and fix the app if the change is a regression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a passing screenshot assertion prove the dashboard works correctly?

No. It checks the rendered appearance against a reference; functional assertions are still needed to verify that controls and workflows behave as intended.

Should every dashboard page have a screenshot test?

Not necessarily. Start with high-value workflows and materially different UI states, then expand where visual regressions would matter.

Can I use screenshots from one operating system as baselines on another?

Differences may result from operating system, browser, settings, hardware, or headless mode. Keep comparison environments consistent unless you intentionally manage separate baselines.
