Before you collect real comments, test the complete feedback workflow with fictional records: submit them, review where they appear, inspect logs and exports, then delete them and check for retained copies. Synthetic data lets you exercise the workflow without putting real user feedback into a tool whose behavior you have not yet verified.
Why test with synthetic feedback first?
A feedback tool can accept a submission successfully while still exposing it somewhere unexpected, retaining copies after deletion, or mishandling unusual input. Testing only the form misses those risks. The UK Government’s Data and AI Ethics Framework says: “Before going live with a new service, you must thoroughly test to ensure that it works as intended and does not introduce new privacy risks.” It adds: “Where possible, you should conduct tests with anonymised or synthetic data.” The framework recommends testing through build phases and repeating checks after launch, particularly when the system or data sources change.
The steps below are tool-agnostic: the right screens, storage locations, and deletion behavior depend on the particular product and configuration. Treat them as a practical way to apply the framework, not as a guarantee that a specific tool has been tested.
Prepare fictional test records
Create the records yourself or use a generator only after checking where it sends inputs and stores outputs. Use invented names and content; do not take real feedback and simply swap a person’s name. Make fixtures resemble the formats your tool needs to handle, without including anyone’s actual personal details.
#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
Include a normal short comment and a few deliberate edge cases:
- An empty or whitespace-only comment.
- A very long comment, within a reasonable test limit for the tool.
- Punctuation, line breaks, emoji, and non-ASCII characters.
- A duplicate submission.
- Text that resembles sensitive information, such as a fictional account number, but is not anyone’s real detail.
These are useful suggested cases, not a prescribed checklist. Adjust them to the kinds of input your feedback tool accepts.
Rank #2
- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Test the full feedback path
- Submit and validate: Send each fixture through the normal submission route. Check that ordinary input is accepted and that empty, unusually long, malformed, or duplicate entries receive predictable handling rather than causing an error or unexpected behavior.
- Review display and access: Open the intended local review interface and confirm that each record appears as expected. Check which accounts or interfaces can see the entries; do not assume that “local” means access is automatically restricted.
- Inspect logs and exports: Look at relevant logs and create any normal export the tool offers. Check for unintended copies, hidden fields, or fixture text that appears where it should not. Keep these test files clearly identified as synthetic.
- Delete a test record: Remove one fixture through the tool’s ordinary deletion process. Recheck the review view, relevant local storage, and export path to see whether copies remain. If the tool’s documentation does not explain what deletion covers, do not assume that removing an entry from the visible list erases every copy.
- Repeat after changes: Run the checks again after changing the software, configuration, storage, or data flow, and repeat them after launch when those components change.
Record what you checked and what happened, especially any unexpected access or retention. The goal is to establish whether the tool behaves as you intend before real feedback enters the workflow.
What synthetic data can—and cannot—prove
Well-designed fixtures can exercise input handling and reveal where test records are displayed, logged, exported, or retained. They do not prove that real feedback will be safe, that every edge case has been covered, or that fabricated records represent actual users.

“Synthetic” is not by itself a privacy guarantee. The NIST PETs Testbed describes evaluating synthetic and de-identified data for fidelity, utility, and privacy. It also notes that de-identification methods can introduce artifacts or bias. If your fixtures were derived from personal data, assess how they were generated and the privacy risks of the output instead of assuming it is harmless. For an initial workflow test, fully fabricated content avoids putting real user comments into the fixtures.
Check where fixture generation runs
A generator can introduce another data flow, so check where its inputs and outputs go before using it. Microsoft’s synthetic-data-showcase README documents an option to run its web application locally using Docker, with synthesis and evaluation performed in the browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. That is an example of one project’s documented setup; it does not establish that another generator or feedback tool runs locally or handles data the same way.

When to repeat the test
Run the workflow before putting a feedback service into use, then repeat relevant checks when the software, configuration, storage, or data flow changes. A change can affect what is captured, who can view it, where copies are made, or what deletion removes. Testing the whole path with fictional records gives you a way to check those behaviors without starting with real user comments.
